How can a country go from conquering new lands and using conscripted New World indios against samurai/chinks in the fricking Philippines to THAT?

Because that's what happens to every empire: they get bloated and fat on conquest and then they fall to internal corruption and decadence.

Many different factors, including the decentralized political nature of Spain, inefficient taxation, a succession of weak kings, power struggles in the Spanish court and a tendency to focus on the American colonies instead of Spain's domestic economy, all contributed to the decline of the Habsburg rule of Spain.

the elastic is interesting to me. Are your camouflage uniforms cut pretty close? Our American uniforms have pretty stiff fabric, but they're cut very loosely to compensate.

Kind of weird how the Spanish military is so irrelevant when you consider how influential Spain was in the past and it being one of the larger countries in Europe, you would think you would hear more about or discussions about what equipment it uses but even Portugal gets discussed more once in a blue moon then Spain. The Spanish legion is the only thing people ever bring up about them anymore.

It's because we pretty much didn't participate in the two biggest conflicts in europe. Also we're poor so we don't have the money to build a strong military.

Well we remained neutral during WWI, in WWII there was the blue division and some other stuff but we didn't go all in like Italy or Germany so I wouldn't really say we were "really" participated in the war.

According to the book in front of me, there were 42 000 blue division on the eastern front. 60% casualties. That's pulling Australia numbers.

Yes but those were volunteers(in theory), Spain as a whole didn't get fully involved, and frankly it was for the best, it's not like the axis would win even with our help, and I'm sure the country would have suffered from it.

Absolutely no doubt that Spain was better off neutral. Considering how far west they are on the map, I am certain they would have been bombed to smithereens and then spent most of the war being occupied.

There's a bunch of good Spanish war stories. Maybe my favorite is the one about the American trucks. As used to be well known, Henry Ford was a major, errr, right winger. So far right wing he made Genghis Khan look like a Democrat. The 3rd Reich bought shitloads of his trucks for the Wehrmacht until the war started. Then when that was banned Spain bought Ford trucks instead... and promptly sold them on to Germany. Took a while before USA caught on and banned that too.

      >Kind of weird how the Spanish military is so irrelevant when you consider how influential Spain was in the past and it being one of the larger countries in Europe

Not really. Spain mostly conquered primitives, and some lesser developed civilizations like in the Philippines. Their conflicts with the Ottomans in North Africa never really got anywhere for them. They were kicked out by the Ottomans in Tunisia and then failed at taking Algeria.

The only notable Old World society Spain had victories over near the end was Morocco but even there they only conquered some small parts of it and Morocco was nowhere near its former glory in the mid 1800s and early 1900s.

Spanish tercios were the best military formation on earth until Rocroi, the most innovative and the forerunner of everything that went later. They also had impressive logistics for the time https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_Road

Why aren't they wearing their chin straps correctly?

Part of their tradition, same with the open collar shirt

There's old traditional wisdom about chin straps that basically boils down to "if you wear it right, someone can grab your hat and choke you out with it. If you wear it wrong, they grab your hat and it comes off." Marching bands wear it similarly, although it's all ceremonial anyway. Basically it's just tradition.

    I'm 6'6 270lb, builtfat. On a trip thru Spain.

These Spanish military guys surround me on a train to Madrid.
They squeeze in close. Too close. Their guns and equipment poke into me. They look up at me, almost backwards like an owl, with fierce stares--their muscular butts pinning me to the wall of the train.

Anyways that's the story of my first negligent discharge.
