In first world countries, if soldiers lose their feet because of equipment, it's a problem. In Mother Russia, it's no big deal.

            >inferior equipment causes soldiers to get injured due to not being idiot-proof
            >not the equipments' fault

There's a reason why militaries generally try to make all equipment idiot proof.

            Advantages of foot-wrap
            -easy maintenance, holes dont matter
            -dry faster
-when used optimally, better than socks

            Disadvantages:
-misuse of them causes people to lose their feet to frostbite and other injuries related to improper feet wrap use

            Advantages of socks:
-Even an idiot can use them

            Disadvantages:
            -slightly higher maintenance
            -dry slower

Disadvantages can be solved by just giving people a few extra pairs of socks.

            So, overall socks are better.

The NVA ones aren't bad but you really need to stretch them after each machine wash or they will turn into ankle socks. Figured that out early on so I still have mine. Stashed aways somewhere.

Wraps actually are quicker to dry out

Foot wraps are actually just fine. They work. Ask /outdoors if you don't believe me. Some enthusiast even prefer them over socks. So the wraps are not the problem.
The point is that you need to be trained in how to wrap them.
And at this point, russia does not do training. At all. Those boys have never used them, and haven't been trained how to get them on properly.

The main advantage of socks is that even the most thick-headed gopnik can get them on quickly. Foot-wraps actually take some time and skill to use.
Some officer probably stole and sold their socks at the marketplace and drank the monkey.

Use fricking wool socks like a normal person with some money and sense.

Producing socks, albeit easy for the untrained eye, requires:

      >Stable supply chain
      >Up to standard textile process, I mean ISO compliant, QA compliant and QC compliant from sewing, color used, materials, blending, etc
      >Then you need to ensure that the factory is compliant with regulations, h&s etc
      >Then ensure packaging (again, compliant to standards, like waterproof etc), delivery (compliant to standard, again, meaning trucks should be waterproof too in order to not get moldy socks etc..)

All this stuff is not 'fakeable', if a factory explodes or Soldiers start getting sore feet because some color used in socks contains lead or asbestos or shit or whatever, people will notice.

It's just easier to buy crappy chinese socks and overpay for them, while embezzling ofc, and then issue 'glorious wrapping' to soldiers when socks run out.

That's it. Russia cannot produce things up to standards, not even Chinese standards, because they steal whatever is not bailed and destroy whatever is nailed.

you think the snow Black folk would be able to get some babushkas together to knit some fricking wool socks for their soon to be dead boys instead of sending them off with cloth scraps.
        >But they dry out better
        Not better than wool
        >But they dry out better than socks when you take them off
When are these guys going to get the chance to take these off? They're going to be sleeping outside in a trench.
Maybe you can argue giving someone multiple pairs of wraps, but then guess what, that argument applies to socks as well.
        >bbbut they work better
They don't, and they especially don't work better when your soldiers are 20 year old zoomers who received zero training and don't know how to wrap up- and in fact as others point out, if they're put on incorrectly they're fricking worse because people will ignore injuries, writing them off as "oh it's ok I have wrap, it's just really cold"

They aren't using wraps because they're better or because "muh tradition," they're using wraps because they get to buy strips of scrap cloth and embezzle the rest of the money while technically still "adequately" supplying the conscripts.
Or they just don't fricking have factories for socks of all things like said.

They are comparable and have some benefits. Major drawbacks include that you actually have to train people on how to use them and it takes effort to properly put them on.
It’s like velcro and shoe laces. If you grew up using only velcro, you will never understand why laces might be better.

Unironically an un-shillling, not-moronic version of this
Foot wrappings can be quite good indeed, and they are quite used to them. (Mind you, they have been using them in fricking Siberian winter for literally centuries).
Also, you have the implication of the moronness and shilling of the quoted post. Many a moron would schew socks, which work equally well, not because "wrappings also work well and are easier to improvise", which are valid reasons, but because, let me quote him, "lazy people of modern society" moronation, to make a point.

        Anonymous

It is not just about improvisation, it’s also about the materials you can use, ease of cleaning them and them hardly ever wearing out. They are not better or worse than socks, it is just a different solution to the same problem.
Making them and putting them on should be something all the survivalists learn how to do, because it is a rather useful skill.

If someone takes all my stuff including my footwear they’re leaving me naked and left for dead. There isn’t excess cloth around. Or it’s close to civilization and meant to embarrass me
              >If you are in bumfricknowhere and just lost your pack in a botched river crossing,
Then I wring out my socks. Again, where is all the extra clean cloth sitting around in bumfrick nowhere that I can use for foot wraps?

I just don’t see situations where I lose my footwear, I have no spares, I’m in an adverse environment, I have no help or way to reach help, I’m so far away from anything I can’t walk for a bit to a better place in wet boots and socks, AND there is also dry cloth for footwraps around. There are other skills I lack like identifying edible plants, starting fires with wet tinder without matches or lighters, impromptu shelters, and a whole list of other things that can be practiced first.

Honestly after the first round of PANIK I think the Kherson stuff ended up being a withdrawal, finally forcing the people there to realize that they don't have the men to hold the salient.

But I guess we'll see whether they actually stop and fight, and the equipment left behind. In any case Nova Khokova will be in regular arty range now so it still isn't good news for them.

Surprised the gays aren't pro-russian. Huh.

Most gays, like most normal people, don't like being around projecting homosexuals who are in denial about being in the closet.

Socks don't really work with those jackboots, your heel pumps up and down and it'll work your sock to the bottom of your foot. Benefit is that the boots seal up better against the snow and mud because they don't have laces or any openings that can let moisture in if the goretex wears through.

"No socks" this is not call of duty. Most prefer foot wraps. It's at the soldiers discretion what he puts on his feet. Chechens like to run with socks. Spetsnaz not so much, not even on domestic trainings. Socks does the exact same job as foot wraps, there's no operational advantage to it, it's highly unlikely to make a difference in getting the kill

You know I think that even a 1942 Germany could beat this current Russian army.

1945 Germany, anon. This Russian Army is in way worse shape than the Army defending Berlin on 4/28/45.

Despite the fact that esmarch tourniquet is mostly used as a buttstock tape, it is in fact a tourniquet.

Are Esmarch tourniquets commonly used in combat ?

I am trained as a civilan EMT and we were told to use them only for missing limbs (for maximum of 30 minutes) otherwise we should use compression bandages and/or apply pressure.

Yes. To be fair though the Russian/Soviet ones aren't the same as the esmarch bandages that you're thinking of. Flip side is they're still extremely outdated.

Wraps are traditional in the Russian military.
This is a division in culture more than anything else.
The said they were switching to socks a few years back, but probably had little interest in actually doing so given how effective wraps have been for Russia over the centuries.

Ohhh, just you wait, my pet. They haven't gotten desperate enough to try to attack Odessa with the Admiral Kuznetzsov yet. The comedy train is still rollin' and the ride never ends.

I'm not too surprised by this considering the level of corruption displayed in the russian army. I personally wear foot wraps frequently for fun and to have the skill, they are pretty comfy when wrapped right. The biggest downside to footwraps is the fact that they have a learning curve and it takes some time to get gud at doing it and finding out where your feet likes the fabric to be placed, also if your boots are really wide they will loosen up and need rewrapping if not under a pair of socks. People who are saying that footwraps are a good way to get frostbite clearly have never worn them they are fairly warm about on par with thick cotton socks. They also do dry out faster than socks I've tested this on hikes and from just wearing them around the house under my normal socks, by the time the are completely dry the socks will still be damp.
Socks are superior because convenience and ease of use as most people can put on a pair of socks therefore making them more ideal in a military context since they are idiot proof and don't require skill to use.

If you need to put socks on over the top of footwraps then why not just use socks? Or two pairs if it’s that cold?

It’s nice to hear firsthand from someone who has used them. But it seems like a novelty and for fun rather than better in any measurable way

I do it as a way to help keep them bound when not wearing shoes and use the foot wraps as a warm extra layer during the winter, the way they are wrapped means you get the equivalent to two layers of socks. The types of boots their typically used in have wide toes for the simple reason being if it gets' cold you can either stuff the boot it newspaper or hay to add extra insulation or alternatively wear more socks/ footwraps.

in the Wehrmacht they'd wear the socks under the foot wraps to help preserve them since footwraps are durable, this is because making good socks enmass is actually pretty industrially intensive and Germany wasn't known for its textile mills.

Fun fact: germany developed the machine way to create socks (how to create heels) in 1888

Neat. There are still some problems that need to be overcome to make nice elastic socks primarily the supply of nylon, which was invented 1938 mind you and was basically exclusive to the allies, needed to make socks that are elastic enough to fit a soldier's foot without needing to be sized with 100% accuracy. Before the invention of elastic nylon/cotton socks they had to be fitted using the weaves natural ability to expand meaning socks had to be sized properly, like underwear or other clothing. This means you have to dedicate more of a textile mills floor to making several sizes of socks to properly fit the troops feet, even still if they are washed improperly they will stretch necessitating the use of sock garters to hold them up since they aren't elastic. Which means more resources taken away from production of cloth for uniforms, parachutes, winter gear, ect.
Footwraps in this context make sense since you don't need multiple lines making socks to produce them, you can just make a roll of flat fabric and cut them out, and foot wraps are a one size fits all solution. People with larger feet can angle them or modify the wrapping technique to fit in wraps that are smaller, this also streamlines logistics and production by not needing to distribute or produce several sizes of socks.
In a modern nation though you should have the ability to produce nylon and should be able to mass produce elastic socks though, and woe to any nation that cannot because it means their industry has regressed significantly.
