Because where they have lost Kiev, they have gained significantly in other areas iirc, I don't have the map in front of me and the territory lines aren't the most clear, but At the start of the war RU had a huge chunk of Ukraine, and they lost nearly 60% of everything 3 months in and have been losing it steadily since. In fact I haven't heard anything about Bhakmut except people memeing about it.

The idea is that this war is really a race to kill some number of guys, that above this casualty threshold holding ground becomes impossible and then one side's front becomes vulnerable to maneuver warfare again.
Lots of battles that are strictly speaking phyrric victories are recorded as strategic defeats because they leave the attacker so depleted the territory can't be properly pacified. The seizing of like 99% of Stalingrad in WW2 was technically a German victory because they did it, they took the city. But we call it a defeat because they're logistics and c3 got fucked so bad they all immediately got encircled and lost the second battle of Stalingrad catastrophically.
If the smaller country with a tenth of the GDP and a third of the population has held the enemy back for this long, I'd say that's winning in the context of this conflict

When Russia seized about a third of Ukraine at the start of the war, everybody agreed that was Russia winning. When Russia lost a third of what they seized, that was Russia losing. Since then the net change in held territory is so small it's actually impossible to know who's winning.

I have to say Blackadder is one of the best TV shows ever made
A friend of mine is in the Georgian Legion and rotating in and out of Bakhmut. We can emails from him weekly. Basically it sounds like there are two main trenches running along the road to the city and the Russians just keep sending waves of Wagnerites up them to die. Ukies pound them with Arty/HIMARS, then drones are sent in to finish off the survivors. Then they send in infantry to mop off the stranglers. Rinse and repeat. By the time his unit gets there most of the survivors have shot themselves or blown themselves up with grenades so they don’t end up killing many themselves and spend most of their time climbing over lumps of body parts. He says there are some parts of the trenches where the bodies are stacked 2 or 3 high from multiple different waves. The worst is when it rains and the mud washes away so you can smell the rotting flesh of the older kills beneath the fresh kills. He said last time he was running through the trench when it was muddy and he tripped as his boot caught on something deep in the mud - when he dug it out turns out his bootlace got stuck on a piece of human rib cage that was buried 2 feet in the mud. Sounds like the smell is truly unbearable.

They are but the effort seems very unfocused. Basically Wagner officers just order these guys to storm up what are essentially ww1 style communication trenches. But they have been shelled so much most of them are caved in or half full of bodies so their cover is getting worse. And they seldom have any armor or artillery support when they do this. My friends unit has taken casualties though so occasionally some of the stragglers manage to kill infantry that come to mop them up. It’s just a grind fest really with Russians throwing bodies at the problem.

The way he describes it the trenches in this area seem like a proverbial no man’s land. The Russians hold some trenches but closer to the inner urban areas. In order to push the Ukies out from the 10% of the city they still control, they need to go through these trenches along the main MSR but per my above get slaughtered quite methodically every time it seems.
