      Pistol or rifle?

22 long took down the largest Grizzly ever recorded, so 22 short is probably goodnuf for Brown Bears.

Source? I can’t find anything saying that a .22LR took down the largest Grizzly. But there is something saying a .300 Soku did the job. https://www.foxnews.com/science/alaska-hunter-bags-world-record-grizzly-bear

22 long (weaker than 22 LR) killed the at time world record bear in the 50s.
          It was a headshot.

    >black bear
Any 9mm or above handgun will be fine. Most of them aren’t that big aside from the fatass named Hank the tank last year.
    >cougar
I measure 6 inches so I think I’ll be safe.

A pocket knife with the blade length of 3.5 inches is enough to kill an adult grizzly apparently. I think any gun you can get your hands on is more than enough.

Black bears, it doesn't really matter that much because they are going to want to top.

With cougars you want to be packing as big as you can go. They're all stretched out from the years of pounding, birth, etc. You need to go all out.

Defense? Why would anyone need to defend against such friendly and lovable creatures OP? Just put out some food and we'll politely let ourselves out without ever even waking you

I'm thinking of law school oop north in Black Bear country and don't want to get mogged while camping.

I'm a Bamagay. We only have phantom panthers around here. And pigs.

I think .22lr is best when used in a rifle or long barreled pistol/revolver. It just doesn't doesn't seem right to consider using it the same way one might use a subcompact 10mm pistol.
