On the F-22 (right), It's a rocket motor that helps to push the canopy up and away in the case of an ejection. It seems redundant on the other plane since it has explosive cord in the canopy to shatter it apart in case of an ejection.
>literal cargo cult shenanigans >not one of the engineers on the project even knows what that part is there for
And we are expected to believe this thing has functional stealth? lmao
Yep, take the FC-31 for instance. Notice how the canopy opens from the front like the F-35. The only reason the F-35 does is is because of the lift fan components behind the cockpit for the B model. And they decided that it's easier for all three variants to utilize this design. Now the kicker is the FC-31 literally has no reason to do this as it's not STOVL capable, or planned to be.

The instruments are of course up front and beneath the glare shield their mounts, wiring harnesses etc are packed tightly.
If your canopy hinge is at the front of the cockpit that and the canopy actuator are quite an obstacle to accessibg what's beneath them. That coerces a less-stealthy removable access panel which will still suck, or even worse, the same panel but sealed with RAM requiring excavation to remove before the panel. Fuck all that.
t. retired ancient avionics puke (and other AFSCs because crosstraining is fun!).
It's better for logistics but that's not quite the same as better for maintenance which completely depends on the ease of R&Iing the component then the ease of working on that component.
He means the Chinese copy has no reason to open from the front, since it doesn't have the components behind the canopy that forced the design on the F-35
Let's say you stole the blueprints, okay cool, but don't these things use materials and shit that are autistic ball torture difficult to replicate?
And with that said, would using generic materials / processors etc invalidate / scuff the whole fucking thing and you'd be better off just building stuff better suited for your environment?
Correct, which is why everyone calls out chinaman shills when they try to say their jets have stealth. It's like strapping a ferrari body kit onto a honda civic - yeah it looks similar now, but without all the other changes, you're never coming close to the functionality
The PLA is like the Russian armed forces in that they mostly exist as fancy internal police and to intimidate neighbours. Very much a paper tiger with even less experience in direct conflict. For this purpose things that look modern but actually are a bit shit are fine as long as you never engage in anything more than border conflicts or power projection shenanigans. But the moment a real peer conflict starts they're fucked.

Russia is capable of inventing new homegrown designs yes. It's barely capable of producing them and certainly not in any large number which does still put them ahead of the chinks granted.

China produces better engines than Russia these days.
Unsure if actually fucking stupid or just trolling.
Canopies of FC-31 prototypes 31001 and 31003 open rearward.
31001 has a two-piece canopy. 31003 and all J-35 prototypes have a single piece canopy with internal framing.
Front opening canopies on stealth aircraft make instrumentation easier to access and service. You don't need a separate unstealthy access panel this way.

That's det cord used to break the canopy open when you eject. If you read the side of the F35 you will see it says "Do not cut canopy within 3 inches of the frame". That's because an angle grinder used to cut it might accidentally set it off.
>unironically stuck some plumbing pipes in the canopy without understanding their purpose
I'm shocked that thing even flies if this is the level we're at. Didn't the Indians detect one by accident?
there's something extremely important in this image that shows the difference in engineering and design quality between these two countries and nobody ever picks up on it because it's so subtle
One has EOTS, DSI and the other doesn't. They're literally not in the from the same generation
there are a ton of subtle indicators
one of them is literally the dust on the F22 cockpit center console - those planes are ultimately from the 90s. they've been in service for 30 fucking years and they are still best-in-class.
another is probably the dimensions of the F22 canopy - there's no space wasted to flatten it out like some kind of weird deck hatch the way the J20's is.
another might be the stark difference in quality between the sharp horizontal line around the cockpit - the J20's looks like tape over the seam between two clamshell plastic molds
now, in the J20's defense, it is NOT the J20's lack of boundary layer channel - the J20 is using the same kind of bulge-based boundary layer deflector used by the F35.

That's hilarious
Jesus Christ China really is a cargo cult... lol
Oh god that looks so good right now
I was thinking the same thing
Well shit, I was just craving a pizza.
Fuck it, Imma grab my keys, anyone else want anything?
isn't it kind of arbitrary where it flips open?
See
Thats possible. But it can also be done to increase fuel capacity at the cost of rear visibility.
neat
What do you mean no reason? It's better for maintenance and logistics if they all have the same canopy

what
China produces better engines than Russia these days.
Why is it at a motel?
it's the air force headquarters
That's what all chink buildings look like
Chinese do this shit a lot.
They will add something without fully understanding how it works, they will add it just for the sake of having it, even if it doesn't work at all.
This was an enjoyable theme in ForgottenWeapons Ian's discussions of Chinese Warlord Era pistols.
why don't the f22 or f35 have det cord in the canopy? is it just an ideological difference?
F-35 does

How does the canopy hinge affect cockpit service?
Wouldn’t the air resistance coming from the front affect rear/front hinge ejection differently?
Of course but that's what the actuator and pyrotechnics are for.
I didn't work 35s so I don't know if you can remove/install the ejection seat without pulling the canopy but that would be Very Nice.
The instruments are of course up front and beneath the glare shield their mounts, wiring harnesses etc are packed tightly.

This. This is why I come to /k/
Actual knowledgeable people that shit on any other community (while not shitposting).
Dont mind me, im retarded
So the front hinge canopy makes a less stealthy design due to actuators getting in the way?
