there's two different answers to this. The machine gun, and the submachine gun.
The machine gun originally was so powerful with automatic fire because it could cut down like 100 guys charging a trench. It should be obvious why it's still useful.
The submachine gun, which later evolved into the assault rifle, utilized automatic fire for clearing out rooms and close quarter areas like trenches. That 2 seconds is plenty of time to hose an entire room or trench down with bullets. It should be easy to visualize why having automatic fire in that case would be beneficial. It should be noted, full auto is more or less kind of useless on modern assault rifles with modern tactics
