Take the US Army Infantry. Remove all those that got less the 50 on the ASVAB. Now you have the equal infantry to the Japanese.

Trash, don't make the mistake of thinking that since they are western aligned they fight like anglos.

Like the Chinese, Koreans and Japs of ww2, they are constrained by small statute and emotional baggage from a society that squashed independent thought and makes them subservient and not natural decision makers.

There is a massive list of industrial accidents that have happend because these people were too afraid to question a superior or voice a concern.

Underfunded, not as good as the navy. Despite living in a pacifist society, the few japs that got deployed (under strict orders not to engage unless fired upon) had to be removed because they tried to put themselves in situations where they could engage. Vehicles are mostly a mystery, but can be assumed are up to western standards.
Overall breddy good, but could be a lot better.

So my guess is that the japs and chinese infantry can afford to pick good warriors so their quality is quite good despite non existent combat experience?

Completely different cultures, there's nothing indicating Chinese soldiers have been competent in hundreds of years. They have the worst military history of any country.

So the US Army was sent into the longest retreat in its history and then fought to a stalemate by incompetents? Cool story, bro.

            >inb4 "muh human waves"
            >inb4 "muh k/d ratio" based on US propaganda and kill claims that regularily estimated enemy casualties at more than 10 times the actual number

Honestly Anons, the Korean War was probably the only time that China as a country did really well in a war.
Their entire history spanning thousands of years has basically been them being invaded and conquered with surprising ease, or blowing themselves to bits in apocalyptic civil wars. One of the main reasons why they did so well in Korea is because the Americans kept refusing to believe the Chinese would join in, despite all of their intelligence agents telling them that "No bruh, the chinks are serious about this. Look at all these photographs, reports and communication intercepts proving this". The Americans then thought that it was just a one time thing and proceeded to have their arse handed to them a second time during the Chinese's second offensive. So really, the key to Chinese military success is that getting your enemy to believe any attack they carry out is a complete joke, which to be fair, nine times out of ten, it is.

Korea was a defensive war for South Korea. They, along with UN troops, successfully defended against the Chinese invasion.

Difference being that America barely mobilized for the war while China went balls to the wall in comparison and accomplished nothing outside of a state they have to keep consistently propped up. All for the sake of a bit of land between their people and a better life. China most certainly walked out of the war in worse shape than the US by every metric.

Hell no, guys who would be good soldiers in Japan and China do other shit because there are much better opportunities to make money and confucianist cultures don't view soldiering as honorable. (Neo-Bushido helped Japan get recruits before WWII but then enforced pacificism and awareness of warcrimes happened).
India probably has the best-quality recruits because of the massive discrepancy between India's fighting-age population and their actual military force requirements, the pervasive ultranationalism, the lack of economic opportunity, and the various warrior cultures. However, their training...
Indian soldiers develop their legs very well in training, and they do learn quite adequately how to survive the insanely diverse terrain of India's borders. Beyond that, Indian Army training is just one of many disgraces to a nation that really should have either collapsed or become a superpower by now.

I mean, you take dozens of different ethnicities, totalling hundreds of millions of people, each with a brilliant history and producing a continual stream of geniuses, put them all together in one state under a large European-model bureaucracy, and you'd expect the state to fragment into dozens of peaces within a decade. If it somehow survived, you'd expect that state to become very important, the hub of the world economy and technological development. Yet India has done neither. Do you not think that's crazy?

Some JGSDF saw deployments to Iraq, but we're prohibited from using weapons unless fired upon. I think the Aussies and maybe the Brits did security for them, but some Japs did take fire and technically saw combat.

Feel free to point out an example of a Anglo airline crash that came as a result of a caste system so ingrained into the co-pilot he didn't question his captain when he's literally crashing the plane.

        >In 1977, JAL Cargo Flight 8054 (a cargo aircraft) crashed shortly after takeoff from Anchorage en route to Tokyo, killing all 3 crew. The captain was a US national, with the other two being Japanese. Neither Japanese pilot mentioned the captain's intoxication or stopped him from flying the plane.

There are many example of this, Korean Air Flight 801 also springs to mind.

they were very formal. sticklers for the rules, for things being just so. they had some goofy gear, like when we did some humanitarian assistance stuff in thailand, and the jsdf tagged along, and they had these riot shields (?) that they would place in front of themselves like they were medieval crossbownmen. jsdf seemed like efficient bureaucrats. They were very eager to learn and to train. I got the feeling they didn't get out much, and that they were underfunded, so whenever they got a chance to jump on uncle sam's ammo counts, they'd count coup. Their training ranges were shit. it was odd training there, like, you do an amphibious assault on the beach, and then you go admin and cruise through a normal town, and then drive a few miles, and then oh hey we're live again. whenever they'd do any sort of fire and maneuver, whether MOUT, in the open, etc., they were very lock-step, very rigid, which suggested to me that higher command was more worried about looking good and not fricking up than willing to trust their lower ranked personnel to run the show. I got the sense that every JSDF soldier wanted to do real shit, and that they were just looking for their chance.
The koreans though were all about that hazing. My team smoked them in a soccer match and I couldn't sleep because their whole company was screaming and getting hosed down on the parade deck the whole night. Everything about the JSDF holds for ROK marines, too, but to a lesser degree.
I would be happy to work with either force as continuing liaison if I were back in service.
    >t. worked with JSDF and ROK while deployed as platoon commander in the marines

Well equipped and well trained, but a long tradition of low pay and horrendous barriers to getting a good career post-service leave them interminably saddled with low moral and lower quality recruits. Their imported equipment tends to be of excellent reputation (e.g. PzF 3, F-15). The bulk of their equipment is produced locally and (usually) has high technical performance specifications. Some of the equipment is genuinely good (Type 89, Tan-SAM) and some of it had quality or reliability issues (Type 90, OH-1 Ninja). They enjoy reasonably sized navel and air forces and have been steadily building a modest marine element for the last decade or so. They have a relatively small and old artillery park for their size and economy, and they essentially entirely lack cruise or ballistics missiles with anti-ground options.

Echoing some of the posts in this thread to say that the few Japanese I've talked to about this are of the opinion that ground force is a lesser quality force because there's very little incentive to serve and continue to serve (thus retaining institutional experience). The public prestige was less than in 90s/00s America, comparatively, there's horrendous bottlenecks, and despite the nationalistic apprecation of the institution there seems to be some stigma against the actual grunts, since like in most countries it's the bottom parts of society that can't get a paycheck elsewhere that end up as infantry. I've heard it less frequently that enlisting is viewed kind of like how a westerner would view volunteering for humanitarian service; which makes a little bit of sense to me because of the similar mission, but I don't think that comparison works entirely.
