They do search and rescue, maintain aids to navigation like buoys, break ice, and enforce fishery/boating safety laws. Vital functions and happy they're doing them. They also jizz their pants when something like happens even though no one actually got shot and U.S. Army laundry specialists in Iraq saw more action than this guy ever will in his entire career despite being the literal top 1% of his entire service branch.
I get the feeling that people only like Coast Guard because they're also a domestic federal law enforcement and regulatory agency, in addition to being a military branch in times of war.

This, this is why the Coast Guard is great. It's hard work by real mariners and you'll be damn glad they're there if you need them. I just don't like hearing people pretending it's a gunfighter job in the 21st century.
