What's the best single shot shotgun you can get new?

What's the best single shot shotgun you can get new?

New because I don't wanna have to inspect a used gun to know if its still in good condtion.

I'd ask for O/U or SxS, but for some reason all of those are like $1000+, and I'm a poorgay.

Just get them walmart Hatfield and be done with it

I say OP buy once and cry once. He's not going to reget buying the Henry and it's about 600.

Yeah, but why go for the Henry for $600? At that price, I can get a Mossberg 590 plus ammo.

Well, he said he wanted something under $1,000

I think CZ has a few double barrel shotguns slightly above $1,000

    >What's the best single shot shotgun you can get new?
You can't afford it. You can easily spend 5 figures on a high end single-shot trap gun.

The classic recommendation used to be the H&R Topper or Pardner models; they were also sold under the NEF (New England Firearms) brand. But those haven't been in production for a few years. I wouldn't hesitate to buy an older one, they are very well built so it's unlikely it would give you any trouble unless it's obviously fricked up.
Right now your options are pretty limited. You've got Henry, which are pretty nice and they are made in the US, but they're like $450-500, at which point you could get a nice pump. The rest is Turkshit.

i got a turk shit one for like $80 bucks 2 years ago because it was the display model and asked the manager if he would discount it off the $110 price. looks almost identical to one you posted in op pic

no some turkshit i think named a Hatsan something. its like 19 feet long and cracking the barrel open will send a shotgun shell 2 countys behind you because they had no ever test the ejector. legitamately the only gun i dont care what happens to it. its the equivalent of buying a pocket knife from a gas station and honestly wish there was more useless shit like these around

You can find SxSes or O/Us for under a grand, but nice ones start at about 2k for O/U or double that for a SxS. SxSes don't really have a mid-tier option. It's either cheap crap for cowboy larping like a Stoeger coach gun or it's a really nice gun that costs a few thousand. The middle of the market just doesn't exist currently for SxSes if you want a new one

In what world are good SxS more expensive than a good O/U? The action on an over under is more complex and to be reliable almost always costs more than a SxS.

Just think about it, ejecting shells from two side by side barrels is mechanically much simpler than ejecting two shells from an over under where the lower shell extraction angle is much more severe than the top barrel, or either side barrel on a side by side.

Maybe it's my somewhat limited experience, but SxS are almost always cheaper for similar build quality and finish compared to an O/U.

        >In what world are good SxS more expensive than a good O/U?
I didn't mean that it's harder to build a good SxS, I agree with your analysis on that. I was just stating that there aren't any mid-tier models on the market right now.
For example, take O/Us: for about $2k you can get a Beretta Silver Pigeon or a Browning Citori. Both are great guns, highly reliable, and will stand firing thousands of shells a year for years to come. Both have been recommended over and over again, for years, as great value for a serious clays or hunting gun. Now look at SxSes. What can you get for about 2k new? Very slim pickings. A FAIR Iside, maybe? Not a terrible gun but nowhere near the quality of a Beretta Silver Pigeon.
Now there used to be some good SxSes on the market at that kind of price point, like the Beretta Silver Hawk or the AyA Matador. But those aren't being made anymore.

          Damn, hit post too soon.
...anyway, point is that if you want an O/U there are plenty of choices in the 1-2k range with 2k getting you a really nice gun, but if you want a new SxS you've got various flavors of turkshit until you jack up the price to about 4500 or so and then you could look at a Beretta 486, a Fausti, Savage Fox A-Grade, etc. I wasn't claiming that SxSes cost double what an O/U costs in general. I was pointing out that there's a hole in the market for mid-tier SxSes. There's no equivalent of the Silver Pigeon, you either go cheaper or you go fancier.

That's fair, I haven't really looked at the lower end stuff if I'm honest.

Kind of wish it existed in .17hmr but Savage hates money I guess.

Why not just get a double barrel though?

At anon's price point a new double is going to be an unreliable piece of junk while a single shot will be perfectly functional.

Is there really no comparable double barrel for a reasonable price?

          Anonymous

          Not in my opinion.
Right now the shotgun market looks like this:
Single-shots: no generally good options really. There's turkshit, there's high-end specialty guns for Trap.
Pumps: Plenty of practical options. Maverick 88 is great if you're on a budget and can be had for $250. From there you've got the ever popular Remington 870 and Mossberg 500, Ithaca 37, etc. All great guns for $5-600. There's also the Benelli Nova. There's really no high end pump shotguns.
O/Us: You can find these for a few hundred bucks but honestly those are turds. There are some pretty good options at around $1200-1500 or so, Franchi Instinct, CX Redhead. But for not that much more money you can get a Citori or a Silver Pigeon. IMHO it doesn't make much sense to recommend an O/U under that price point because it's not going to be much more capable than a pump, which you could buy for a lot less.
SxSes: You've got cheapo cowboy larp guns like the Stoeger which are fine for what they are--range toys. But I wouldn't trust them with my life as a defense gun and they're not going to stand up to shooting a lot of clays. And then there's really not much on the market worth mentioning until you get to around 5k.

          A few observations:
I think the success of the Maverick 88 pretty much killed off the market for the old single-shots. 20 years ago it might have made sense, someone that couldn't afford a $500 870 would buy a $250 NEF instead. But when the single-shot costs the same as the pump? And the pump is proven reliable? Most people are going with that pump.
The SxS market has a big hole in it because people have figured out that O/Us are generally preferable for clays. That demand means there's plenty of mid-tier O/Us out there. The people buying SxSes fall into two groups: larpers who want cheap coach guns, and people with money who want a high end hunting gun.

Same reason I got a hammerless revolver even though semi autos are half the price; too complicated. I want something that's simple to learn and use.

I am going to abuse this thread and ask should I but a mouser bolt action conversion to a 20 gauge for a turky gun?
I like to have interesting guns and fictional guns.

At my work i have to use a single shot 12 break action per contract. The best i've found for cheap is the stevens which is IIRC a copy of the HR pardner type. Do NOT get a turkshit single shot from academy or a hatfield, those pieces of shit beat themselves apart under 1000 rds.
