Buy a Tula parts kit and have it built on a receiver of your choice. Then have it gold plated after getting 100 headshots.

This is the correct andswer except without the gold plating. A solid, reputable builder like 2 rivers will build you and AK that is either a pier to, or in most cases, better than a factory gun.

Saiga. The Arsenal SGLs are considered top tier because they don't have the extra receiver holes, but morons bought these at $1,200 when regular Saigas were only $300, and now they expect $6,000 when Saigas are only $2,000. I like regular Saigas better because you can use those extra holes to mount a universal stock mount, rather than having to work around the dumb Russian system that only allows for 2 stock types that fold left only, or use a receiver tang adapter block. Only other way to get a universal mount on is to weld one on. They're by far the best stock mounting systems for AKs other than a Bonesteel folding stock.

Veprs are high quality too, but use lots of proprietary parts and are heavier due to the RPK receiver. I never liked them, not worth getting unless you're getting them in .308 or 7.62x51.

PSAs honestly don't seem that bad, but it may just be marketing lies. Someone tell me this is just a fake shill:

They seem to have everything in order except for longevity, they're using soft metals that end up beating the rifle to death early on (like $2k rounds in). So even if this video were real, the gun was probably so beat to shit inside the gun wouldn't be shooting straight.

Not going to watch that YouTube but PSA has had several years to work out the bugs + plus a hand selected quality control specimen. But to answer OP I’m happy with my Arsenal SAM7-SF-84 and Vepr FM-Ak-47-11

        >go find a gun that was banned from import during the obama administration that might've had a botched conversion done by bubba

Frankly the way an AK works unless you're going to be running tons of rounds through it and actually using it all the time anything is fine. The PSA gen 3 AKs are pretty good and plenty cheap for what you get. The only thing I can say to avoid is the viskas from century arms but even then I've only ever heard anecdotal stories of failures, I've never seen one myself or met anyone who had. An AK is an AK, it's never going to be the best and it's never going to be the worst. My actual stance is that if you don't know which AK you want to buy or what is "high end" then you need to do more research and study the rifle more. What do you actually want out of the rifle? Do you just like the AK? Do you care about which round it's chambered for? These are questions you need to answer and just buying "The high end" isn't going to solve the desire in your heart, it will simply open the door to the desire that fills the new hole when your ignorance has been filled with the rifle you were told you wanted.

You can find Saigas on gunbroker for around $2000. That's not that much more than Wasr Romashit and Zastava Serbshit that are going for over $1000 now. I wouldn't buy an SGL at fricking $5000 though, and that's the cheapest you'll see them.

Arsenal SAM7 is heavy like the Veprs were and the Zastavas are. No it doesn't make it more accurate, you just have a heavier gun and intermediate rifles are supposed to be light. They also still put the shit paint finish on them and charge you $3k for it. Proprietary stock bs too...

I've got a saiga and I love the rifle but I wouldn't tell someone to pay 2,000 dollars for it. I've shot mine and I've shot a friend's PSA, his isn't quite as smooth but it's pretty fricking close and neither look like they're anywhere near death or malfunction after several thousand rounds. You also have to remember the saiga takes proprietary magazines, not everyone wants to spend the 2kish and then spend another 400 on a conversion or risk fricking it up themselves. Telling a newbie to get a saiga is like a car salesman answer because they might not know they need to convert it, the magazines will be proprietary if they don't or all else that comes with it like the gas tube conversion if they want to change the handguard and such. It's just not a good rifle for a newbie unless you want to throw them out of the pan and into the fire.

Get one converted. Importers were converting them, Atlantic Firearms did my trigger move, barrel threading, and bullet guide. Most owners have had theirs converted by a smith or did it themselves. That would be an important thing to ask and inspect before purchasing. I think they're worth it for collectors and someone who wants to know for sure their AK is going to outlive even their grandsons.

$2000 is still not that much for a banned gun, and it's a top of the line muh real Russian AK. For someone who wants the best I'd say that's it and still realistic to get.

              Anonymous

Paying $2000 for a $200 gun that hasn't been imported since 2014 is an insane waste of money. Yes Saigas are good but they're not worth it if you missed the boat. Actually almost no AKs are "worth it" anymore after Biden's ammo ban. The entire appeal of AKs was that 7.62x39 was a lot cheaper than 5.56x45. Now 7.62x39 steelcase is more expensive than 5.56 brasscase. AKs are pretty much just novelties now until other countries catch up to fill the void left by Russian ammo.

Unironically Galil ACE if you can find a NiB Gen 1. The Gen 2 is a cost-cutting measure disguised as an upgrade and looks like shit. If you want a more "AK" looking AK, then Arsenal SAM7SF is pretty good, but they are too expensive for what they are now. Saigas and Veprs are better, but it's almost impossible to find those NiB anymore unless you sacrifice your firstborn son to K-Var on fuddbroker.

Elaborate on what? The Galil ACE Gen 2? They removed the iron sights, plastic magwell, and lightening cuts to save money on manufacturing. The only "upgrades" are a supposedly improved trigger (Gen 1 trigger wasn't even bad) and the AR style buffer tube and M-lok handguard (both gay and cringe). The handguard supposedly aids in accuracy since it's free-floated, but it also makes disassembly a lot more difficult. It seems to be made more for the competition shooter market rather than collectors.
