Not gonna lie if that kid is wearing “Z” to support his father going to war or something I kind of feel bad. I lost my dad when I was a kid and it’s something I wish no one has to deal with.

It provides a source of manpower if they were actually invaded, and also functions as a recruiting pipeline. Some of the conscripts either like the military enough they enlist or are pressured in to it.

    >tfw the FSB took all of the money meant to bribe Ukrainians into letting you roll over them in three hours so you are now stuck in a quagmire of special military operation and you cannot call up reserves since you are not at war
    >also, your boss, who is a psychotic murdering bastard, is not happy with this failure

It's a very big difference between using conscripts to defend your own soil and sending them to fight in another country that hasn't attacked yours. There's a great risk they will eat vast resources, require much training and be quite unwilling to fight. An enlisted has the military as a job. The mobilized conscripted soldier has a civilian job and a family and maybe financial interests; that's a lot to lose for someone with nothing to win.

It's wrong to view a decision made by any country in terms of, what purpose does it serve said country, and especially so for Russia.

Russia already had a conscription army, and hence a large sector of the economy built around catering for these two million people going through the system - catering, housing, provisions, etc. Someone was making bank from that system, and would oppose any attempt to change it. So why would anyone try and reform it? Qui bono?

a lot of the conscripts were pressured into signing contracts and thus becomming contractors

but like actually, none really, retarded nationalism and security theatre, unless your country is actually at risk of invasion conscription is generally useless.

The purpose of conscription is to generate a reserve of manpower that can be mobilized in case of a larger war.

At this point I think Russia would retreat from Ukraine before they fully mobilized. There resources and logistics are already fucked, adding thousands more into a fucked system won't help Russia.
