Obviously there is definitely a point. I'd imagine these days it must be easier for the right person, they can find NEETs who'd love to sit in a isolated underground space all day and watch anime and play games and still unhesitatingly launch on command.

Well 30 minutes tops after the launch the bunker is going to get hit with a few enemy nukes and there is no escape plus you just killed millions of people, seems kinda shitty

        >Well 30 minutes tops after the launch the bunker is going to get hit with a few enemy nukes and there is no escape
There's no escape for most and that's only in the incredibly low probability event that it even happens. Also Russian nukes are probably total shit if they even still work, even if they aim at your bunker and it'll go off odds high it'll be a half mile away and a surface burst.

        >plus you just killed millions of people
SAVED millions of people. MY people, who are good, not moronic vatniks or bugs who should have rebelled against their mad kings before it came to nuclear warfare if they wanted to live.

American silos are basically giant target decoys. This is because they are armed with the old minuteman ICBMs and the fact that they are top priority targets in the event of a full scale launch. Every single warhead sent to take out a silo (and you need atleast a dozen to guarantee a kill) is one less warhead aimed at a city, they're also all in the middle of nowhere. The real killers are the trident ICBMs carried by submarines that are impossible to track and can fire a retaliatory strike at the enemy's coastline making it harder to defend against since its not launched half a world away, as well as the plane carried warheads that are on board stealth bombers.
On a related note, here is a write up made by a nuke anon a few years back detailing nuclear strategy

It’s all about having redundancy in strike capability. Although you may think submarines are basically invulnerable, it’s a big fear of anybody concerned with them that at some point (or perhaps it’s already happened) the oceans may become “transparent” and allow the enemy to pinpoint submarines with deadly accuracy. Missile silos aren’t there to absorb warheads (when your dealing with 10s of thousands of warheads like you were during the Cold War the couple hundred sent towards silos is worthless), they’re there to provide another part of the nuclear triad and supplement both the US’s first and second strike capability.

No. It’s a legitimate concern for militaries around the world that a fundamental part of their nuclear deterrence could be sniped during a first strike scenario by a nuclear depth charge because the ocean doesn’t hide things as well as we think it does.

Once qualified they make $80,000 a year. When they pin on Captain at 3.5 to 4 years in, they make $100,000/yr. Major, $125,000/yr. Not a bad gig considering they get a free TS clearance out of it and can move up to Skyking/Looking Glass/NAOC aircrew after their initial tour. Hardly pointless compared to working at McCuck's.

My grandfather‘s friend out in Sydney Nebraska was a Keman back in the mid 70s and that line from Wargames is true you are essentially responsible for the death of no less than 20 million people there is a psychological background test and on top of that you can also be fired if you have a discrepancy in the belief that your higher ups could be crazy .

      Anonymous

      >there is a psychological background test
That's called Personnel Reliability Program (PRP). It's not as comprehensive as you might think. There's questions asking are you a communist, have you ever been hypnotized, would you feel comfortable launching a nuclear missile if ordered to by your superiors, etc. In the early 2000's some people intentionally failed the initial PRP screening so they could get reclassed into other officer specialties. That became an unsafe skate when they discharged (instead of reclassing) a few new lieutenants for PRP unsuitability and those Lts had to pay back their entire AFROTC scholarships/USAFA tuition ($200,000 ... good with that English degree)
The main point of PRP is continuous monitoring throughout your whole nuclear career and they'll PRP decertify you if you become schizophrenic or alcohol abuse, etc. But there's nothing like penis inspection in an interrogation room to find out your dreaded mild 4chaim frogposting autismrinos.

Someone's always watching them through more means than you realize. Kids get busted all the time trying to get in to deactivated ones. They know you want to watch before you do. You may not like it, but the US is 6 million years ahead in military tech. The US military & government holds the keys to the meaning of life & death, has both friendly & evil alien helpers (ET/FNORD), psychic "remote viewing" spie's, time travel tech, fleets of reverse-engineered antigravity alien tech "TR-3B Black Triangle" flying ship's powered by element 115, communication with ghosts the afterlife & the unborn, triple-barreled M551A666 PsychoSheridan tank's, 75th Rangers exoskeleton-hip-fired gyro-stabilised 120mm infantry mortar's with pinpoint accuracy during 25mph sprint, access to other "parallel" universe's, NSA/DARPA GGGQEP quantum ∞(±6^∀)Petahertz microprocessors to eavesdrop on every single electronic & non-electronic communication in the world even sign language underneath 1km of EMF Kevlar, "Rods from God" (just 1 orbital tungsten telephone pole = two Czar Bombas), the 300,000-strong "Fighting Molemen" U.S. SUBTERRANEAN FORCE, FT LEE VA (the secret "7th branch" existing since 1899), quantum IFVs, "phase-shifting" Armored Recovery Vehicles, new "Stealth" tech that makes jet's invisible to Radar. Shoulder-fired ASAT missiles. Stealth field kitchens. This is publicized in Stargate SG1, scientific research publication Popular Science, only a fraction of the more spooky & shadowy stuff not listed above is merely hinted at in Marvel Cinematic Universe™, history documentary Red Alert 2, time travel documentary Life is Strange (David Madsen was a rogue DIA test subject), but the pardoned parcel is the US of A is at least 6 million years ahead in military tech even without the help of alien's. It is 6 million years ahead though the exact number fluctuates due to the activities of the US Military Time Travel Program underneath Barksdale, A.F.B. , L. A. , this 6 million years ahead is a universally agreed-upon average by the world & intergalactic/ET scientific communities.

Even if you can get past the fence it doesn’t matter because 99% of the installation is underground. People misunderstand what (would) happen in a nuclear war. First you hit their nuclear 1st-strike capability. Known silo locations, active TEL positions, etc. Maybe nuclear subs too, but that would be done by a trailing attack sub.

After this initial exchange, both sides will have a chance to decide if they are able to continue fighting. Do they have a meaningful second strike capability? Are there enough surviving nuke subs in position? Are the nuke bombers ready to go? Are the reserve TELs in shape to deploy? Etc. Most countries DON’T have a nuclear triad, and those countries stop here and accept their L. Those which do can decide if they can still win.

In the best case scenario, one side declares the L and sues for a halt. The nuclear devastation stops here with no major population centers hit, no mass loss of life, and the economy still functional. If both sides decide to keep going, the target list opens up a lot, but population centers are really the very last targets to hit, and both sides probably wants things to settle before it comes to that.

Except nuclear war favors the guy who can deliver the knock out blow first, meaning the more nukes you send flying towards targets and the faster you can do that the better. If the side that initiates first strike is incapable of scoring a knock out blow in the first turn then they are in for a bad time.

My father was a missile launch officer for the Minuteman IIIs in the late 60's. He said they pretty much just sat in the chair and read books 99% of the time. The most excitement that ever happened was when his partner thought he heard the commies in one of the tunnels or some shit. Said the guy drew his snub nose .38 they carried around and started to crawl around looking for them. He reported it, a bunch of MPs showed up and they never saw the guy again.

can these things actually tank a direct nuclear hit?
      How far underground are they?
Or is their job not only to fire off a missile but take the L on receiving a missile directly on their forehead instead of it going to a populated city?

These bunkers are just built into the ground. They're made so that nobody can force their way in. Nuclear protection, not so much. I mean, it'd make a helluva fallout shelter, but if you get hit with a nuke with any appreciable accuracy, your number's getting punched then and there.

        Anonymous

        >can these things actually tank a direct nuclear hit?
You'd honestly be surprised how easy that is to do. A few feet of dirt followed by a layer of reinforced concrete and presto changeo you've got a bunker that will survive a nuclear blast for an actually halfway decent price.
Given how quickly the initial radiation dies off, realistically these are a massively powerful investment for the military especially with how easily they can build them in the midwest.

Or go to the eating place and shout did you guys just hear we just lunched a nuke. Or some shit like that. Maybe soap up the door knobs so people would have a hard time opening doors.

What other pranks could you play in others while in that base?

Maybe dress up as a russian commando and pretend you are there to capture the place lol

They do a lot of drills, studying, and exams to keep them occupied. The exams are key because that’s how they move up in rank and pay. Other than that it’s just like any other “sit and wait for something to happen” type of job

I just rewatched WarGames because of this thread.

It's an incredibly israeli movie. Not that it has any subversive messaging, just that there are so many fricking israelites in the cast and crew.

I was at a soviet nuclear silo museum, the radio dispatcher had a 2x2 meter office with nothing but a table and a chair and a shitty radio that he had to listen to all shift through all the static. In case he had to pee, he had to use a bottle.
