Aways assumed it was a Russian suitcase nuke. The CIA wanted it off the market. IRA wanted it for obvious reasons. Russians wanted it back. Former stasi wanted it for obvious reasons.

But yeah, it could be anything, and that’s the point.

That actually makes a lot of sense.

i think that's what they were trying to imply as well, but even the smallest nuke was far too large for that case.

The Special Atomic Demolition Munition (SADM), also known as the XM129 and XM159 Atomic Demolition Charges, and the B54 bomb was a nuclear man-portable atomic demolition munition (ADM) system fielded by the US military from the 1960s to 1980s but never used in combat.

Production of the B54 Mod 1 SADM began in August 1964. The weapon was 12 inches (305 mm) in diameter, 18 inches (457 mm) long, and weighed 58.5 pounds (26.5 kg). It included the warhead, a fuzing and firing system with a mechanical timer, a ferroelectric firing set and a sealed housing.

There is an interview out there with some former Delta guy who was talking about he and one other guy trained to use the SADM. Apparently the plan was to attack harbors and other strategic targets with it. They would parachute in, make their way to shore and set it up. He was saying how it had a denotation timer(up to 14 hours IIRC) on it so they could gey away in time. In reality though one of them would have to stay behind to make sure it wasn't found and disarmed or messed with. Otherwise you could just be giving someone a free nuke.

      Underrated movie

I read somewhere that the producers deliberately kept it unrevealed, but it would be something that would unravel the IRA peace process, so on-set it was assumed to be incriminating papers or a nuke

    I assumed a biological agent.
If it was anything computer related the case would be too big, and no nuke is that small.
