What's been the most "gruesome" post-World Wars conflict?

What's been the most "gruesome" post-World Wars conflict? I don't mean purely in the number of casualties but also in terms of brutality and destruction.

first chechen war has a special place in my heart, the VHS artiracts on the video footage make it seem more like some sort of hellscape
i almost quit halfway through anna politkovakaya's book, nothing has changed since 90's apparently

"VHS filters" annoy me. I'm oldfag enough to remember when VHS was the norm. It didn't look like that. You could have a lot of shit if it was a worn out tape. But even then it wasn't as "regular" as the fake filters make it seem. Usually there would be one part of the tape that would get fucked more than the rest. Especially if someone would rewind and rewatch a specific part over and over. I had independence day on VHS and wore out the part where Will Smith punched the alien.

Do you get the Mandela effect thing where you distinctly remember him saying "Welcome to Urff" afterwards in a really exaggerated way? I swear I fucking remember him grumbling out the English thorn in the word.

Holy shit is this true. I worked in a video store in the 80s that had adult films

Cambodia is fucked. The amount of people just randomly rounded up and tortured is staggering.

Central Africa Republic - machetes and swords still commonly used, even bows, poor access to even small arms in the interior because of how isolated it is. This leads to heavy use of craft made musketoons and smooth bore rifles using craft made ammunition that is less effective and maims more. Almost no medical care. Extremely brutal, torture, etc. Very sectarian too, Anti-Balaka crusaders versus Jihadis.

Liberia and Sierra Leone also come to mind. Widespread use of child soldiers, mass rape, drugging said soldiers, and even black magic cannibalistic rituals.

DRC had a similar war, and the Second Congo War is the deadliest war since WW2 as well (excluding the Chinese Civil War, which ran 1911 to 1950, with insurgencies into 1965).

Rwanda had 700-800,000 dead in 90 days, largely with clubs, machetes, and fire.

There's a dozen African conflicts you could make a case for but I'd elect the Rwandan civil war. The Chechen wars are also a good candidate.

I nominate the Iran-Iraq war. They brought back trench warfare and electrified a swamp for area denial. It has to be in the top 10 at least.

Yeah this. I can believe that African conflicts had a lot of butchery and barbarity but I think it pales in comparison to building roads out of freshly killed bodies.

Honestly most third world countries have been in a constant state of war since WW2, so the list of "gruesome conflicts" is pretty fucking big.

Also Yugoslavia because that hasn't been mentioned yet.

It's probably subjective but Robert Young Pelton covered a lot of wars and I think he said Chechnya was the worst because he witnessed Russia pancaking the place with Scud missiles. Just sheer stupid brutal organized murder.

Indo-Pakistani war of 1971. Mass rapes up to the millions, over 300k Bengali Hindus killed. But for Euros, I'd say that the worst war that we've had is the Yugoslav wars.

I nominate the Salvadoran Civil War
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salvadoran_Civil_War
    >The United Nations (UN) reports that the war killed more than 75,000 people between 1979 and 1992, along with approximately 8,000 disappeared persons. Human rights violations, particularly the kidnapping, torture, and murder of suspected FMLN sympathizers by state security forces and paramilitary death squads – were pervasive.[36][37][38]
    >An integral part of the Salvadoran Army's counterinsurgency strategy entailed "draining the sea" or "drying up the ocean", that is, eliminating the insurgency by eradicating its support base in the countryside. The primary target was the civilian population – displacing or killing them in order to remove any possible base of support for the rebels. The concept of "draining the sea" had its basis in a doctrine by Mao Zedong that emphasized that "The guerrilla must move amongst the people as a fish swims in the sea."[91]

Toss up between Iran-Iraq war or the balkan war post yugolav collaspe. Iran-Iraq is considered to be second only to WWII in terms of sheer amount of fatalities within a single conflict. Shit was basically WWI with late 20th century hardware and was as lethal as you would expect. No mans land, chemical weapons, aerial duels, artillery bombardment with the cavet that fully automatic weapons exist. Balkans however gave anti partisan activity in WWII a run for their fucking money. Warcrimes a bound with entire towns liquidated and refugee centers turned into death camps. One of the few times UN peace keepers got into armed engagement because half of them were balkan militants wearing stolen uniforms to ambush convoys or fleeing civilians.

Korean war was probably one of the worst in terms of sheer scale, the air campaign on North Korea destroyed most infrastructure and almost 20% of the North Korean population died in the war in general.
