Depends entirely on how much you are willing to spend.

I'm getting a few thousand from tax returns and plan to use most of it to buy a good 1911 that will last me a while without needing constant babying

Thats just the thing. How many thousand and how much are you willing to let go of.
1500-2k can already get you a nice Dan Wesson or Springfield TRP.
The sky is the limit though.

What's the limit in-terms of function? I don't care too much for having a super gucci gun, prefer just black or blued

Bit looser tolerances tend to aid reliability, USGI 1911s were rattly old shitboxes that could have interchangeable parts when needed.
The tighter the lockup, the higher the supposed accuracy, but there is where ammo pickiness and religious care start to come in.

Bro adjust your withholding. A big return isn’t a magic gift, you have less money all year

Probably a stupid question but are the government frames heat treated and if so, does the welding affect it when they weld and refit?

I've heard way too much about how comp guns need constant babying
I don't mind doing some cleaning and whatnot here and there, but want something that can be used through thick and thin

are these better than Tisas ones?

Unironically no. I actually compaired a Colt Government to a Tisas A1 clone and the clone was Smoother, Had a better trigger and was 350 out the door. If you want a 1911A1 without spending the money the Tisas is the one to get, Rock Islands arent even CLOSE

        Your options are very simple.
        >buy a Tisas ($300-800)
        >buy a Dan Wesson ($1500-2000)
        >buy a custom made, hand fit piece from a reputable smith. ($4000-8000)

        Tisas parkerized 1911A1

Based, their roach 1911a1 is top notch

The only inherent flaw has to do with using a single stack mag that isn't perfectly straight.

What? The 1911s design is public domain now anon. Anyone can make one. They are using modern CNC machines.

OP pls no bulli, but are you only interested in 45 ACP when you say 1911, and only in single stack guns? Also, are you only interested in the GI barrel length?

Dan Wesson makes a very nice, albeit stainless, 1911. I'm also partial to those blued Turnbull pre-A1 1911s.

a Tisas or Rock Island that's just parkerized. The lower end 1911/1911a1s are made with the looser tolerances that make the damn gun run well, like an AK, but a pistol. No frills, it'll run, and it looks just as nice as what your grandpappy would have been issued. If you're really a stickler for "high end" just join the CMP and wait for another drop.

Which company do I go to for a stainless 1911 thats below a kilobuck

      Anonymous

stainless isn't the same as this, but if you get a tisas that was/is parkerized, you can get a competent gunsmith to strip the finish and nickel plate it and still be well below 2/3 the cost of one of the kilobuck guns. Bonus points for ivory grips.

Tisa has several stainless options, some as low as 600-700 for a full stainless gun

I dont want to agree with him but Im not going to lie the Sig 1911s are actually pretty nice. I have a Tac Ops in 10mm that I love. Want to change the trigger out for an A1 but thats all I have to complain about it. Wouldn't buy one in .45 from them though.

    Love my SR1911 Commander.
I've put 1200 rounds through it and not one issue.
Bought it when it was $800. They are around $1000 now.
Went to the GS to get a Colt and walked out with this instead. SO fn happy I did.
Took what I saved and bought a shit load of ammo for all my guns.
