What would happen if Russia were to detonate a low-yield nuke over the Black Sea?

Would this propel NATO in to action? And what kind of effect would it have on the local ecosystem?

If the radiation touches any of the NATO countries Russia turns into nuclear wasteland.
Otherwise the world would instantly gain a lot of information about how old and impaired is the russian nuclear arsenal as that can be read from the explosion.

Any kind of nuclear detonation I would imagine would illicit a hostile response, let alone active deployment of NATO forces. As for the ecosystem, another anon is going to have to fact check me. I believe it'll depend on if it is a surface detonation or airburst. An airburst would throw radiation and fissile material for miles. Water is a pretty good medium for containing radiation sinces its mostly inert, so a surface detonation would probably only kill anything in the immediate vicinity.
End of the day, the Russians would be fools to think this would work in their favor. And NATO would be fools to not respond in kind.

Nato respond in kind? So they would nuke the Black Sea too?

MY prediction is that it would do absolutely nothing. Both NATO and the Ukrainians would just plain ignore it and continue, pic relevant style.

it would just backfire with countries providing more support to ukraine. maybe even some new countries. it would be the dumbest thing for russia to do, which is why they might actually do it

If any nation is allowed to use nukes offensively for strategic purposes in an offensive war they started, you immediately unleash a global nuclear arms race and every single country on earth will attempt to develop a nuclear arsenal. Nukes have to remain the ultimate tabboo. You use them, your nation becomes a green wastelend of glass and bones.

Probaly something like this. Even its "allies" will abandon Russia. PUSSIA will make North-Korea looks like the most popular kid in the UN class.

The only ones who would win if Russia detonates a nuke at this point will be the MIC. Even the most insignificant defense company will be drowned in unlimited money straight from the Fed.

  10. 2 years ago

Even more support for Ukraine, with the clear implication that further escalations would be matched by further deliveries, if not more direct intervention
Russia woild probably get completely isolated from everybody, even China and India
It wouldn't even help the russians a tiny bit

What would the potential upside even be for Russia? Scare limp-dick Germans into... what? Is it to scare the Ukrainians into surrender or else Kiev is next? There's only downside for Russia.

Its cheaper if russian holopps do the hard work for peanuts and the robber barons keep the servant slave class of the russian common man in eternal poverty and misery (which they readily accept thanks to this being bred in their DNA). As long as the robber barons stay in their shithole this trade is good and profitable. Rock the boat and get deleted.

Of course they don’t care about ukraine - thats why they’re drip feeding just enough to keep the conflict going, they want to use it to destroy russia (its working). Russia detonating a nuke right outside of a combat zone and moving nukes (there are no such thing as tactical nukes, only low yield nukes) into said combat zone only serves to hasten russias ostracization from the global community and ultimate demise. I believe “our masters” actually would prefer russia demo a nuke for the world near crimea.

Provided that it detonates over international waters doesn't kill anyone

    >immediate effects

United States immediately stands its entire military to DEFCON 1. B-2s loaded with nuclear weapons are ordered to their positive control points just outside of Russian airspace. Plans for a First Strike on Russia are dusted off and reviewed.

    >political effects

Probably a whole lot of fist-shaking followed by open threats by NATO to retaliate with nuclear weapons with the Russians use one on Ukraine for real.

    >long-term effects

The United States declares that SALT II has been abrogated and begins rebuilding its nuclear arsenal back to Cold War levels.

    [...]

Imagine thinking that the United States is going to tolerate the of nuclear weapons in an unprovoked war of aggression by the AGGRESSOR.

It's simple you dumbfrick, the Russians nuke Ukraine, all talk stops and NATO launches retaliatory nuclear strikes on Russia.

It would go beyond Article 5.
It would immediately create an international crisis on a level that the world hasn't seen since the Cuban missile crisis, and everyone doing business with Russia would be put under pressure over it.
It would also be a extreme desperation move by the Russians and show how weak their military is and how badly that they are losing the war.

    >both repubs and democrats want to tear russia a new butthole
    >them detonating a nuke in an active war zone that will almost certainly be catastrophic for everyone around because this is russia we’re discussing will be the perfect excuse to both curb stomp the soviet menace and show china what happens if they try any similar bullshit too
Keep in mind the only time nukes were ever used outside of a strictly testing environment was back in 1945, if the morons actually go through with this and detonate even a small one over the Black Sea can have a whole snowball effect of nuclear treaties going to the wayside and the US going full Cold War mode in mercilessly slaughtering randoms across the world specifically to maintain its hegemony. Russia will instantly make North Korea look like a global tourism hotspot from how quickly everyone will isolate themselves, maybe some buck broken Ossis in the German government will slurp up any potential gas but thats about it. There’s a reason why MacArthur and Lemay were explicitly told no nukes during Korea, and this current conflict is far more hot in half the time. Either way Russia gets fricked and I hope to god they do it if only for the entertainment such a spectacle will bring. Turkey alone will absolutely chimp the frick out in such a scenario.

fyi, every high quality nuke wargame runs into the "test demonstration detonation as a show of strength and resolve" gambit.
    >Escalate to de-escalate
they call it. the move is supposed to intimidate the rival into submission but it never works.
    it always backfires.
    it always escalates

Because it only works on first order thinking.
The consequences of *not* responding are arguably worse in the long term than biting the bullet and calling the bluff, specifically because if you back down over a demonstration use then literally everyone everywhere now knows exactly where the line is, and will rush to get nuclear weapons.
I don't think it would trigger a nuclear attack on Russia, but it would probably trigger some form of direct intervention. Possibly a naval blockade, possibly a no fly zone, possibly some kind of direct security guarantee with Ukraine.

        Anonymous

Yeah a demonstration nuke isn't gonna result in nuclear war but it WILL result in Ukraine immediately being inducted into NATO, followed by direct intervention. It's probably the fastest way to end this war but not in the way Russia wants.

      Anonymous

Why would the Russians stop with Ukraine if all it takes to get them to surrender is to detonate a nuke as a show of force?
Then they would use the same threat over and over again until someone called their bluff, and at that point its WW3.

I think Russia would do it. It would be nice to see an HD detonation of a modern nuke, plus it would add some excitement to this war finally. Not to mention NATO would finally stop pussy footing around with their support and go all in with military aid, like armor and aircraft.

    they won't do shit
this is a sabre-rattling because russians desperately want to freeze the conflict and it is consistent with calls of a cease-fire from moscow lovers in germany and such.
ukraine is not gonna roll into crimea any time soon. it will be a miracle if they secure kherson this year.
