with SCALP they have enough range to hit any target within Ukraine's internationally recognized borders. the US has been pretty consistent that they don't want their weapons to be used outside of those borders, so why would they supply something with even longer range?

America is not internally consistent on that at all, the top brass are all opposed (for now) but quite a lot of those underneath the brass are in favor of changing U.S doctrine on policy outcomes, including allowing Ukraine to threaten Russia/Crimea and retake Crimea as one of the non-negotiable aspects of any peace deal

    >Do you think the US will send JASSM or is it not worth the risk of being captured

It's pretty much duplicating capability and causing a bigger integration headache. If anything JASSM would probably perform a bit worse in Ukraine due the the lack of a multi-effect warhead reducing it's ability to penetrate deep bunkers.

    >What would be the logical next step after storm shadows?

Jets, which is already in progress but it'll be late 2024 before we see new Ukrainian pilots ready on F16 to western standards. Experienced fast jet pilots probably reduce that to summer next year for western training and F16 instruction.

The JASSM has double the range and an extremely effective warhead though. Plus it has RAM coating allowing it to slip into places undetected without the heavy use of MALD like stormshadow requires

        Anonymous

        >The JASSM has double the range

We don't know storm shadows max range, and it's a moot point anyway since the stated range is already enough to reach anywhere in Ukraine. JASSM is a unitary warhead, it's fine for a hanger or cave but it's not on the same level as a multi effect warhead blowing a hole and saving all it's kinetic energy for deeper penetration.

Storm Shadow has seen plenty of combat use without MALD previously, it's not a prerequisite. JASSM offers nothing new to Ukraine and won't be going, you can dream as much as you like but those facts wont change.

Conceptualized. The storm shadow entered service in the early 2000s and JASSM toots their time and entered service in 2009. JASSM was also upgraded with a more efficient engine and more internal fuel while keeping the same dimensions. That upgrade to the ER massively increased range

no one said it has a kinetic energy projectile, but it does rely on kinetic energy to penetrate a target. Unlike multi effect warheads which use a shaped charge to blast earth/concrete out of the way and then use a follow through munition to penetrate.

Ryatheon has the license for lair launched BROACH. That's the primary reason JSOW is still in the arsenal - deep penetration. ATACMS has no deep penetration warhead either, it's a unitary blast warhead.

There is no extra benefit in JASSM ariving in Ukraine when storm shadow does literally everything it does and in some cases does things better - penetration. range is a moot point because all targets in Ukraine are already in range.

If you have a missile that can hit any target you need it to, why do you need to spend months integrating another weapon that can also hit everything but penetrate it's targets slightly worse.

          > The stealth is probably pretty much identical, both are stealthy cruise missiles with RAM coatings and S ducts.
oh I didn’t realize I was replying to someone so misinformed. The storm shadow doesn’t have a RAM coating and you will not be able to reply to this post with a reputable source saying that it does have RAM

Give Ukraine parts to build their own kamikaze drones. The Switchblade fricking sucks and it can't travel long distances either. Most of Europe barely knows what a drone is.
Ukraine knows how to and so put resources towards that. Then send them against Crimea and Krasnador Krai and hopefully a few against Transnistria.

The US will not send JASSM as it has identified it as a key munition in the China fight and is currently "critically understocked". Procurement of JASSM is being ramped up to over a thousand per year along with LRASM.

This. Why risk JASSMs when storm shadow is more than enough for Russia. You don’t want the RAM coating of a JASSM to be collected from a missile strike and sent to the chinks. Just use the lower tech storm shadow that is unironically good enough

Wasn't it used in Syria? what would be the point of keeping it back now? I'm sure the chinks collected enough debris

Maybe but it definitely isn’t needed against Russia so why send more

Could be handy if the ukie offensive gets bogged down and the war devolves into an attrition game once more. You're right though, right now it doesn't do anything the stormshadow isn't doing

Yeah the range requirements in Ukraine aren’t very far. No need for ultra stand-off weapons like JASSM

This is a thinly veiled JASSM vs. Storm Shadow thread that we've had multiple times.

Nations sends weapons as they decide Ukraine needs them. Anybody who believes they are not sending the latest and greatest because of fear of capture while GMLRS and brimstone are actively being used is a plebbit level clown with no capacity for any level of sapience.
