    No moni.

The entire point of the AK is to be a 20 dollar assault rifle. Why buy an expensive, tactical version of the 20 dollar rifle when an AR will always be lighter, more accurate, and more compatible with western equipment?

      Anonymous

Fun fact: an american AK is the most accurate version of the platform.

I have no doubts that with time, the AK will surpass the AR

Laziness. Like actual institutional laziness. They literally did not care enough to identify and correct deficiencies in the rifle. Literally,

Zenitco begged them to let them just make a rifle exactly like that in their own style, and were turned down. Maybe rightly. It would have held zero but that shit would be $2k and weigh 10 pounds dry.

Vidya Butts was a PrepHole pass holder who was wrongfully banned because of a homosexual in the area. The jannies have made an eternal enemy because of their obstinate attitude to admitting wrongdoing. I for one endorse his one-man jihad against the jannies.

What went wrong is that they should have made an AK with a dust cover that can hold zero to put ootics on for the normies, and then finally made a new pattern rifle for the professional army. That way they coukd begin the process of transitioning from an obsolete platform to something actually worthwhile

Nothing. Western Youtubers trash talk it by saying it's bad at shit it was never supposed to be good at. The project goals are "be as cheap as possible" and "be just barely good enough for the average grunt". Not to be a particularly good rifle. It just has to function and have "minute of anywhere within an entire squad" level accuracy since Russia isn't even training grunts well enough to utilize minute of man accuracy. Guys who are actually good are outfitted separately with shit that Russia simply can't afford to give to everyone.

so what the frick was the point of not building more AK-74s you contrarian moron? If you have a fricking railed dust cover the troops have to take it off to clean the insides, and you've just lost zero. The redesign of the safety selector was pointless. The furniture is Tapco quality.

        It's cheaper than 74Ms.
The optics mounts they issue in mass for 74M ALSO don't hold zero, only the good ones they can't afford to issue everyone hold zero.

Well, basically, you'd get a pretty fricking nice rifle but it's about the cost of an AEK-971/A.545. It's on par, with any modern western rifle, with the same features. Just eastern-block manufacture and styling. But this is expensive. What happened makes sense; a 74M with new parts and a furniture set. And they still couldn't buy enough.

Or make its dust cover or furniture stable enough to hold zero

That would have taken more effort and cost more. Zenitco literally begged them to just let their company do the work. They declined. Because Zenit is expensive.

The same thing that went wrong with Colt.
KC has no reason to innovate, and when they're asked to they simply drag their feet and ultimately release something that is technologically dated and commercially unsuccessful.

The AK-12, or more appropriately what the AK-12 should have been, was already figured out by Spetznas, Zenitco and the commercial market about a decade earlier.

    >heavier
    >optics either require a heavily modified dust cover you now can't remove, mounting them super far forward, or on a long dovetail arm
is the ak platform obselete? sure the ar is a bit less stupid simple to use and disassemble but is that worth it?

The russian army doesn't use optics so yes its worth it

People who don't know what they're talking about pretending Russia has the capability to CNC machine 500k zenitco rails for $1 each and reoutfit the entire armed forces like the us did with the m4a1 also think IR lasers the Russians can't afford to issue and the us is moving away from are what's causing the dismal performance of the Russian armed forces in Ukraine.

They're wrong of course and it's convenient to spam "your rifle will get you killed" completely organically in the middle of a war typified by mass media participation as a key weapon.

    Tldr, AK-12 is fine(ish).

      Anonymous

      >Russia can't afford to CNC some aluminum blocks
      >but Zenitco can sell their dust cover for $500 in the commercial market
It's not an economical problem, it's a service problem. The AK-12 is a financial disaster for KC and it's a great example of what happens when your company is being awarded government contracts due to corruption rather than competition.

Also, IR lasers don't matter much but flashlights and being able to mount optics is pretty important for the kind of CQB fighting we've been seeing in Ukraine.

        >Also, IR lasers don't matter much but flashlights and being able to mount optics is pretty important for the kind of CQB fighting we've been seeing in Ukraine.
Good news then. AK-12 does that just fine.

Except for the fact that they don't have them. Russia kicked back an inordinate amount of money to KC to develop new rifles and other guns rather than simply retrofitting their existing 100 series.

Last I checked KC doesn't ship the AK-12 with an optic.

What good does a furniture kit do on a gun that's shooting 20moa because your barrel is worn out for some hotdog down a hallway action? The guns needed replaced no matter what. Keeping them was never an option.

              Anonymous

              >rebarreling an AK-74M is impossible
You started off as an idiot by suggesting it'd be more expensive to mill aluminum dust covers than to design an entirely new rifle, but now you've just gone and outed yourself as a complete moron

                Anonymous

It's not JUST barrels. The whole guns have been neglected by subhumans for decades. You'd maybe be able to reuse a couple parts per gun, but that's it.

                Anonymous

                Also
                >design an entirely new rifle
There's like two new parts for the actual firearm. The rest of the AK-12 is a furniture kit that uses those two new parts to attach. It's not much work to just use a different trunnion and gas tube when building new guns YOU NEED ANYWAY BECAUSE YOUR CURRENT ONES ARE FALLING APART. And the AK-400 series the AK-12 is based on was something KC had already developed that they just submitted after Russia stopped wanting to fund the cool prototype AK-12. All the wasted development money was sunk into that prototype that was never going to happen, the current 12 didn't cost them any more than doing different furniture on new AK-74Ms.

Burst fire mode doctrinally makes sense for conscript army but implementation is ass, either the burst mode decides at random how many bullets you actually spit out, or your selection lever just shoots past and falls off the gun.

Iron sights I think are an objective upgrade.

The front handguard is cheap plastic shit that doesn't hold zero, only useful for flashlights (which the VDV didn't even have at Hostomel)

Buttstock I don't think can extend very far.

    Mags are nice.

  25. 2 years ago

Logistically, rifle is fine, KC wanted to continue the simplification/consolidation trend that had previously led to the AK74M.

When the AK74 debuted, you had several varieties that required separate lines to build gorrilion examples needed.
    >AK74 Fixed stock
    >AKS74 side folding stock
    >AK74N fixed stock with optics rail
    >AKS74N side folding stock with optics rail
    >AKS74U side folding stock short carbine
    >AKS74UN side folding stock short carbine with optics rail

This was a ridiculous amount of duplication of effort that resulted in logicstical snarl when it came time to distribute the arms in the Red Army. The East Germans started dabbing on the Soviets with the MPi74, which was a AK74N with a fixed stock rear trunnion with an optional side folding stock and standard optics rail. The Soviets decided to boil down all the different variants down to a version of the AKS74N with a plastic side folding buttstock with the shape of the fixed stock, and a standard optics rail, and renamed as the AK74M. The AKS74UN, with its multitude of unicorn parts was ditched in favor of an AK74M with a cut down barrel and a combined gas/front sight block and dubbed the AK105.

The AK12 that the Russians adopted took the AK 105, lengthened the barrel, tapcoed the frick out of it, and added a hinged railed dustcover with the rear sight moved back. Now the only difference between the rifle and carbine is the barrel length, sight radius is the same, components are the same, bubbah can convert a standard rifle into a carbine with a band saw on the barrel, and pressing out the muzzle device threaded block and putting it on the barrel stub sticking out from the gas/sight block.

The only moronic thing on the rifle is the two round burst, implemented at a time when everyone is abandoning burst fire in favor of professionals with good full auto training.

A snowball effect of "lets make it cheaper and skim some off the top". I've no doubt the original and various test models of the AK-12 might have been adequate. But good ol Slavic buisness practices got to it during mass production.
