What weapons and tactics would you use to defend against a cavalry charge down a 45 degree angle slope into heavily armoured and braced pikes when there is a demigod blinding you and your men?

Russians invented the "orcs are Russians" meme in the pre-internet era because they cant help but see anything Ugly and Defeated as Russian, it is how they interpret all media.

But orcs are not Russians, they never were, and they never will be.

Turkish survivors of the Polish charge in Vienna said pikes didnt work, a hundred thousand tons of galloping horses quite literally made an earthquake, the Turks couldnt plant their pikes into the ground - when the charge hit, the first 5 rows of men were atomised by the sheer force of impact and the rest was trampled to death.

imagine Battle of Minas Tirith, but 4 times bigger (6 thousand Rohhirrim, Poles fielded 22,000 cavalry to Vienna).

if there ever was a melee battle i would want a high budget film being made around, its this.

    crazy, borderline insane shit.

btw a Lithuanian commonwealth hussar has the world record of impaling 6 guys during a charge.

        That is obviously not real.

          of course it is.

          >Lithuanian commonwealth
Which one of Tolkien's books were those in again?

just a cool historical fact, no need to get your panties in a bunch.

            >of course it is
I would be willing to go as far as to say that in the entire history of warfare that nobody has ever impaled 6 men (who were alive as they became 'paled) at a single time and nobody ever will.
There are no man-kebabs on the battlefield.

i could see it happening in some city battle where hussars were charging into a mass of people trapped by barricades

Something out front of the front line that forces the Calvary to loose their speed. >Barriers that force the horses to leap and land right into spikes or have to approach slowly. This layered with dudes chucking spears once the Calvary are forced to stop the charge

Wooden spikes pointing at 15 to 45 degree angles from the slops they charge down from.

If there was no wood, I'd naturally have tunnels behind that thing and mats to fashion a substitute with stone.

literally 1 shallow ditch with dimensions 4 feet wide by 2 feet deep will eliminate any cavalry charge

I'd naturally create tunnels with which to lead enemy forces into with our reinforcements already on the inside and force their numbers into single or double file lines. Easily create explosives or use arrows behind breech walls and have alternative hidden entry and escape ways. It'd basically be the busy work of the place. Dig tunnels to fashion stone spikes as defense and to erect more walls. Naturally, tunnels would be dug out to be militaristically advantages for my side. 300 them inside rock tunnels where their numbers mean nothing after being crippled by stone spikes.

With tunnels you can even make it where you can rain stuff down above their heads inside tunnels from another tunnel above while people behind the wall at the end of the hallway is shooting you with arrows and occasionally throwing bombs that don't collapse the tunnel but send shrapnel everywhere.

Literally just try to do what the Uruk-hai tried to do. Even without the wizard the Rohirrim would have fricked the Uruk-hai. That might as well have been an ambush with an extra 15 seconds taken to mock the soon to be dead. The Uruks had no clue an attack would come from that slope, had likely been told there's no way Rohan would be getting reinforcements. Rohan's horses aren't regular horses (why they can charge straight through braced pike lines multiple times in the series) and all that weight roaring down that steep as frick hill that fast isn't stopping even if they frick up and horses start tripping and tumbling.

They did not have a reason to dig trenches or erect barriers. They did not have time to do so once it was revealed that would've been a good idea. They were mere feet from total victory with their flanks secured by what looks like impassably steep cliffs. They were undoubtedly expecting to slaughter the Rohirrim from inside Helm's Deep as they were likely expected to have shown up days later if at all, not at the last moments of the battle to take the fortress.

    >defend against a cavalry charge down a 45 degree angle slope
dig small holes and place boulders around? i cant even stand on a 45 degree angle slope so i think a 800kg animal with fragile legs sprinting will have some trouble

The fact that the horses can do the impossible is a point against their enemy, not the horses.
