what the frick is this anon talking about
i assume its zoomer drama as soon as there is some immediate hateful connection made bewteen two entirely unrelated topics
>Nobody knows what the frick they're doing because it's a war of transitioning technology and tactics. >Experimental chemical weapons are deployed regularly and result in agonizing injury and death >First time in history mass artillery has ever been deployed, no frame of reference for the giant frick-off explosions that are raining down from fricking nowhere >Most of the war is spent in a ditch where no gains are made until all your friends are slowly picked off by sniper fire and artillery shells >You don't even know what the frick you're fighting for. There is no clear enemy, or ideology. You're just a pawn being pushed around on a map being redrawn by old men completely divorced from the horror they're inflicting on you.
I think the problem with people trying to visualize ww1 is that even the best movies fall short at depicting how bad that war was. And the death tolls of world war 2 make people think that ww1 wasn't that bad in comparison. Most people can't comprehend the amount of trenches that were dug. I've seen numbers of 25-35k miles in total. >because it's a war of transitioning technology and tactics.
One day you're lobbing artillery at each other, getting gassed, then the next day you're like oh frick this plane is shooting at me and throwing bombs at me, then there's this tank coming at you that you can't do shit about. >Most of the war is spent in a ditch where no gains are made until all your friends are slowly picked off by sniper fire and artillery shells
And you're knee high in shit, blood, and every other bodily fluid, and the rats are eating your dead friends because you can't hike the bodies back that many miles through the trenches when you're getting shelled and gassed.
>I think the problem with people trying to visualize ww1 is that even the best movies fall short at depicting how bad that war was.
Allow me to present you with a close analogy:
Imagine being a tunneler in ww1
that's some nightmare shit, in a dark crawlspace, risk of explosions collapsing it at any time, the possibility of encountering enemy counter tunnelers and having to do CQC in the dark
if it's any consolation, tunnel cqc was extremely rare. you were much more likely to get counter tunneled and have your tunnel collapse, suffocating to death.
>tfw tunnel torpedoes were a thing >Stack a ton of ANFO in the direction your hear digging >Stack sandbags infront of the small tunnel of ANFO >Set it off >Any tunnels in front of it instantly collapses sideways, crushing anyone to death standing up.
Nah frick off, ancient wars were way worse >fight in WW1 >quick deaths from bullets or shrapnel >suicide or mercy killing is usually possible >POWs treated somewhat humanely >decent chance of going home to family >healthcare exists
vs >fight in some tribal/imperial conflict in 500 BC >slow and painful deaths >could take weeks for infections to kill >no healthcare >brutally tortured, raped, maybe enslaved if captured >seriously look up ancient torture methods >low chance of ever returning home >DISEASE man, often killed more than the enemy
Key difference is that ancient warfare was usually fairly low-casualty, often planned to cute details like "the weather sucks today, we shall fight tommorow" and the degree of violence was usually fairly limited.
Also, slavery was the driver of economy, just like your soldiers were also farmers without whom you will all starve - hence greater interest in keeping both your own and the enemy alive.
Then also very different morals and how people seen religion played a grand role.
Warfare of antiquity is generaly overmemed. With that being said, there were obviously still some absolutely nightmarish battles and wars.
People often discount that before firearms, warfare was still largely individual effort, especially for less organized groups. There was no industrial killing like today. If you want to murder the other guy, you will be the one stabbing him up, you will feel his blood, guts, piss and shit on you and you will get to look him in the eye face to face during the whole thing too. It is not so easy or clean to btfo a person with a cold weapon. Men often made war for reasons that would be very alien and plainly nonsensical to us. Warfare of old was often deeply spiritual, religious venture. Not religious war mind you, but war itself was understood as one of a way how to achieve spiritual gains otherwise limited to wise men, priests and such.
Romans especially were very different in this than how people see them today. Every war was a holy war for them, part of religious, even metaphysical. Shitload of pretty much forgotten aspects we completely ignore today.
Very different from industrial scale slaughter of WWI and WWII or today.
You shouldn't have left one important detail in your already great post. They often did ritual slaughter before the battle, asking the gods for signs and other stuff, and they would postpone the battle if the priests said no. It's hilarious how superstitious people were back then.
>they would postpone the battle if the priests said no. It's hilarious how superstitious people were back then
It's not even much 'back then' in some parts of the world, during Mongolian invasion in the USSR Ungern refused to use artillery and machine guns until specific date because astrologers and lamas told him so.
>GREAT SHAMAN OUR ENEMY ARE NOT READY FOR US, DO THE GODS FAVOUR OUR ATTACK >the shaman rummages through the sheeps stomach to count the amount of wrinkles on the intestines >THE OMENS SAY..... NEXT THURSDAY WILL BE A PERFECT TIME FOR BATTLE
god it must've been so much fun to be a soothsayer/oracle in those times.
just make shit up and they'll believe you because you have "i look at sheep guts for a living" in your job description
all of that stuff from 500bc still applies to ww1 >slow painful deaths
i wouldnt consider bleeding out in a mudpuddle in nomans land while your arm both legs and half of your faced blown off quick and painless >could take weeks for infections to kill
none fatal gunshot or artillery wounds as well as trench foot often lead to gangrene and fatalities >no healthcare
read about great war field hospitals, they arent much better if you even get to one >brutally tortured, raped, maybe enslaved if captured >seriously look up ancient torture methods
okay ill give you that one but still youd probably starve to death of die of disease in a pow camp if youre even taken prisoner > low chance of ever returning home
whole villages were completely decimated because all of the young men went to war together and got annihilated in battle leaving noone to repopulate > DISEASE man, often killed more than the enemy
typhus, staff, the spanish flu, infections, botulism, cholera and many more were incredibly common and lethal in ww1 and hygiene was all but out the window in the trenches
>whole villages were completely decimated because all of the young men went to war together and got annihilated in battle leaving noone to repopulate
AFAIK the british stopped deploying people from the same place for this reason. It used to be useful for the camaraderie and morale, but ww1 was on another level losses-wise, in a widespread manner.
yeah the british stopped the pals divisions i think in 1916ish, but countries like serbia esp had such a large amount of their population decimated that is was like back in the plague days
the us civil war. all of this in minus the chemicals, but you get to march at your enemy, do bayonet combat, get shot at with a machine gun for the first time in history, and become an amputee
>It sounds like it was a stupid war.
That is every war.
They say war is hell, but war is just moronic. I don't even know what the frick the current one is about and you gays have been talking about it non-stop the whole year.
what's incredibly wild to me is that those same men, who thought of this fricking crazy conflict, are largely responsible for the geopolitical mess we're in currently. WWI begat Hitler, and WWII is what has finally led to this eastern bloc/western conflict. All because some old people wanted to have a stalemate in a fricking trench, and formed a larger coalition to sanction Germany into the dirt, and implant toxic social ideas into its society, which ultimately led to the ultra-Nationalist government being elected
i'm convinced that Russia fricking around in Ukraine is the next version of WWI. Russia will be cucked at the end of it like Germany. Another global Great Depression that's already starting. The American Empire on the verge of collapse.
all really due to the global financial system. it was a mistake. The chads living in the rain forests in South America, largely un-interfered with, have it figured out
Smells like a vatnik post >obsessed with artillery and chemical weapons >has no understanding of the world order that is worth fighting for >thinks everything is corrupt like r*ssia
Your average soldier never saw combat. So pick any really. My vote is WW1 because even if you're in a rear line defense you are still sitting in a mud hole with vermin everywhere.
Junger loved war. It was really refreshing to read a memoir where it didn't devolve into whining in the last chapter.
Even when their final offense turned out a bust his spirits were never broken.
>Recruiters told me I'd get a free place if I took a short trip north with the force to sharpen my teeth in the water wars. It's either that or starve. Where do I sign up? I've heard the stories of C*nadians killing refugees, even launching bombs on American farmers. After centuries we kept em safe from invaders, when push came to shove they tried to choke up all the water. I'm here in Lansing with the Army Division sponsored by the Infrastructure Corps down at Amazon. If I make it out alive we'll have a home on a lake. If die, what's the diff? I'm dead anyway. I'm a goner I'm a goner I'm a goner. But I'd rather be Gunner than a goner. Bombed out ruins of Flint in my rearview. Bombed out ruins of a half-dead man. Had to stop smokin meth so they'd give me a gun. A small price to pay. I don't wanna starve on my own. When we hit the border didn't see no troops. All I saw was Mounties patrolling refugee camps. They didn't even point their fricking guns at us. Outnumbered, then I heard the machinegunners gunning. Was it the one at target practice? Most of the dead were Americans fleeing what had become of us. The sergeant said "That's what they get for runnin." It felt fricked up going through their belongings. But I got a solar powered phone full of old songs and a speaker to blast for the folks in my pod. On the way to London, Ontario we found a farming village and they told us to take what we needed which was everything, and shoot what we didn't which was everything else.
My vote is with the losers at Carrhae.
Folks burying their head in the dirt, hoping to suffocate before they were stabbed to death.... over hours.
All war is terrible but, those dudes definitely had nothing left to fear in Hell.
This. >whole feudal state grows a single food staple >rice harvest fails >hundreds of thousands of peasants with pikes force marched into neighboring feudal kingdom >either die of starvation, kill the enemy and take their rice. >sometimes the enemy was equally starving, in which case both sides starve
This was basically 2000 years of mainland Chinese history
Wtf, i took that literally and read through the while article searching for the part where they were analy raped, thx for wasting my time (not really, it was and interesting read)

But if you survived, it would have been heaven...
>After the war, an 1871 census recorded 221,079 inhabitants, of which 106,254 were women, 28,746 were men, and 86,079 were children (with no indication of sex or upper age limit).[91]
Just imagine a 1:4 sex ratio, probably even higher among young people. I'd seed so many women it would be considered a crime against humanity.
That reminds me, my great-greatfather lived through some doujin tier shit like that. >great-greatfather was a Czechoslovakian legionnaire in Russia when he was very young. >returned home nearly decade after the conflict ended (to his wife who faithfully waited for him and now nearly adult children) always said that he'd spent majority of time there captured >never really wanted to talk about his experience there. And as we all know legionnaires went through major warfare, everyone always assumed he'd seen or did some horrible shit >only on his death bed he actually retells the story to his son (my grandfather), it went like this: >travelling across whole Russia, trying to get back home >stuck in buttfrick nowhere Siberia with his bros >they are trying to reach a railway station which should be somewhere around >weather gets terrible, he gets lost in a snowstorm, all alone >nearly dies from exposure >barely makes it to some village, just few houses near frozen lake, nothing more >knocks on a first door, some babushka opens it >he explains everything >she calls some local woman who can tend to frostbite and shit >she arrives, pumps him full of vodka and starts tending to his wounds >it takes few weeks until he is alright again >finds out the village is quite literally just women, since all men went to war or died out from old age >lady who cares for him is this middle aged woman who explains him they would really appreciate him helping around, since the life there is hard there and they need a man around >he has nothing better to do, all his bros are gone and the enemy won't find him there neither, so he agrees >they get to know each other better, he strategically forgets to mention the fact he has wife and kids home >she is still a good looking woman, he is a young guy full of strength, of course they start fricking very soon >this lady is somewhat of a central figure in the village, she knows it wouldn't work like that, so she decides not to be greedy
cont.
>few weeks later she tells him he needs to help other women too and takes him to the nearest house >so he goes, he repairs her roof, brings shitload of firewood, fixes the well, cleans up the chimney, etc. >she repays him with food, drink and of course sex >he sticks around for a week or two >then she sends him to another neighbor, where the similar process repeats >during the day he works on women's houses, helps with hardest work, fixes things >nights are spent in embrace of rather thirsty ladies, some of whom had been without man for years >years pass like this, the war ends, he still sticks around there >he described it as "paradise on god's earth" >at this point, most of the women in the village are with his child >one day the conscience finally catches up with him >not knowing what is with his wife and family back home is crushing him >he admits that to the main lady, she reluctantly agrees to help him to get back to civilization >spents nearly two weeks walking to the nearest train station >in a few months of time he is back home, tells everyone he was a POW the whole time >it's not unusual, most spent years getting back, some arrived even later, many never returned at all >gets war hero's welcome and cushy position in new czechoslovak army
Later, when he was re-telling the whole story to my grandfather (who then told it to my dad, who gave the story to me), he repeatedly said that those years in Russia were by far happiest of his life. And considering these memories were possibly last thing on his mind when he left this world, I would say he wasn't lying neither.

Why the frick does everything the Czechoslovakian Legion did sound like a god damn anime?
>protagonist from technologically developed nation gets teleported into medieval-level kingdom of orcs and various other fantasy races
it's basically isekai
there's an anecdote from jaroslav hašek (author of good soldier schweik) who joined the bolsheviks and got assigned as a commissar to some shithole in bashkortostan
the bolsheviks were doing a literacy campaign, so his commander decided to have posters put up around the city saying that everyone who didn't learn to read within 3 days would be shot, called it a day and then went back to drinking himself into a coma
>so his commander decided to have posters put up around the city saying that everyone who didn't learn to read within 3 days would be shot, called it a day and then went back to drinking himself into a coma
Quintessentially Russian approach.

PrepHole bro, how far have you followed his legacy up till now? There's a war going on between Ukraine and Russia.
Cheers. I'm not that poster, but I was in that thread (had to check the archive because I was sure I've read it somewhere before). You're actually in Ukraine? Damn. I'm glad you're all right, though.

reminds me of a great great uncle of mine in the second world war >didnt come back after the war >we thought he was dead >turns up in the 1950s with an illness with an italian wife and kids >his english wife was not happy >turns out he'd been a pow and got off with a local woman there
not as good as yours but i thought i may as well share it anyway, also apparently italian pow camps were very nice!

Unironically would love to see this adapted into a movie or novel of some kind.
Yeah, decisive Tang victory where they ate all the women and non fighting aged men in that one city was a pretty rough one. But I figure most wars are their own special hell. Vietnam with the bugs and the heat and the traps and the claustrophobia and government performing experiments on you. WWI with the running 100,000 shell bombardments that literally brain damage you if they don't kill you and the chemical weapons and the horrifying mix of Napoleonic and modern combat with horses charging machine guns, spiked clubs and shotguns etc. Generally speaking war just isn't a very good time unless you're wildly overmatching your opponent.
One of the many many wars in Ancient China. If disease didn't get you, some sort of horrific death by torture would. Then your corpse would probably get eaten.
frick it doesn't even have to be ancient. the Taiping rebellion was an apocalyptic bloodbath and that was in the middle of the 19th century. Conservative estimates put it at 20-30 million dead civilians and soldiers. Possible it was significantly higher. That's as bad as WW1.
Nothing turns the rivers red with blood like Chinese internal conflict
I’ve often wondered how many of these Chinese casualty numbers are true. It seems like every time someone sneezes in China tens of millions of them die. How is it that every other rebellion in China dwarves the largest European wars in terms of bloodshed?
probably anything that involves getting eviscerated or impaired and left on a battlefield to rot before modern medicine was designed. Bullets are a blessing.
The Iran-Iraq War was its own special hell.
WW1 tier tactics using modern equipment (including the first helicopter duels) topped off with Arab incompetence on both sides
Oh and some chemical weapon usage plus child soldiers
It’s living thru any major long siege battle ending with a sack (on the losing side ofc). The mental strain of starvation and constant siege tactics (loud noises, fires, etc etc) and the necessary sacrifices make it literally inhuman. Basically concentration camp levels ending in complete annihilatiokn since putting up a siege defense meant once the siege is done your city will get fricked soooooo hard people will sing sad songs about it for centuries
It has to be either ww1 or ww2, with probably an edge to ww1. Trench warfare was an absolutely brutal slog and they saw use of some of the worst and most unethical """""weapons""""" that have ever existed. WW2 was also insane mostly because of the enormous scale of everything and the sheer volume of carnage, but also there were a number of individual battles that were particularly bleak. If you were one of the Allies in Europe there was probably better than 50% chance you were sent to your death in Normandy so that somebody else could complete the real mission objective.
I was about to write WW1 because battle gases were so brutal (even the eternal meme nazis didn't want to use sarin stocks they had even at the end) but the japs have always been an extremely fricking brutal enemy.
especially if you were in one of the elite NRA divisions. Also, to a lesser extent, the same in all Jap occupied territories except maybe Taiwan.
I used to be against the use of atom bomb in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but after going deep into the history of the Pacific, Chinese and Burma theaters, I wish we just turned their entire island into an irradiated prairie.
IDK, but ancient wars had no social stigma about torturing prisoners for amusement, enslaving/raping your family, raping you, enslaving you, and genocide was done as a matter of course if taking slaves wasn't worthwhile.
Supply lines were shit and starvation could wipe out armies on the move. No heat, but you have to be out in the winter. No AC. No medicine. Shitty diet. Shit yourself because latrines are near the water source.
Fear if you lose because your infant son is definitely getting smashed against the nearest rock before they rape your wife.
Only warfare that might be more brutal is pre-civilization because it's more common and there is a decent amount of cannibalism.
Remaining HG tribes have homicide rates well above Europe from 1914-1945. Like 15-33% of men who make it to adulthood will die in violent competition.
Single day battlefield deaths also used to be significantly higher. For all the advanced in firepower, deaths are actually down, and deaths as a percentage of the population have gone down dramatically. Just the Thirty Years War killed a greater percentage of Europe than both World Wars, by a significant margin, and that was surrounded by other major wars.
this is the real answer. i would hate to fight at a time when humanity's inner chimp was completely unrestrained and able to do all the fricked up sadistic shit it could imagine. i mean the Japanese and the Russians still behaved this way during WW2 but even they had a few limits that ancient armies did not have.
id bet it was Korea on the Korean side
or Manchuria on the chink side.
you survive all that to be swallowed up by evil in the end...it was cold and shit both places it was low food low support.....yeah sounds pretty shit.
The Romans were henceforth enclosed in a pocket with no means of escape. The Carthaginians created a wall and began to systematically massacre them. Polybius wrote: "as their outer ranks were continually cut down, and the survivors forced to pull back and huddle together, they were finally all killed where they stood."
As Livy described, "So many thousands of Romans were dying... Some, whom their wounds, pinched by the morning cold, had roused, as they were rising up, covered with blood, from the midst of the heaps of slain, were overpowered by the enemy. Some were found with their heads plunged into the earth, which they had excavated; having thus, as it appeared, made pits for themselves, and having suffocated themselves."
nearly six hundred legionaries were slaughtered each minute until darkness brought an end to the bloodletting.
It must be pretty hellish to be a soviet soldier during the winter war. Being cold all the time really fricks you up.
I was at a winter exercise in Norther Norway for 1 week and it took me 2 weeks after finishing the exercise to feel any warmth again
Either WW1 >gas >unlimited arty works >MGs >tanks >planes >mass-scale trench warfare >OVER THE TOP >geopolitical basis for the war being a clusterfrick >KZ-tier conditions guaranteed if you're not an officer
or the Sino/Russo-Japanese War. >you have to fight Japs
It was Vietnam. From the time you landed in that shithole until the time you left, you could be killed by a asiatic at any second. The soldiers were under constant threat of death from an enemy they could barely locate. Wars like WW1, which may have had more brutal fighting, still allowed soldiers time away from the front to rest.
I mean, it depends more on the job than the individual wars themselves. WW2 on the whole was the terrible, but I'd rather be a clerk in WW2 than say, a tunnel rat in Nam or a runner in WW1
I was thinking more about this today, I was orininally in the WW1 camp in this discussion but upon thinking about it more I think being a part of the American Civil War would also be a pretty hellish experience. Especially if you were southern >Literally can't escape the conflict because your neighbors are potential combatants. >Still fighting with basically firing squads, dudes lined up to shoot at each other and watch each other drop dead before running in to gore one another with bayonets. Sometimes canons would blast through the line and completely blow dudes apart. >Terminal performance of the bullets of the day were so nasty and medical technology so poor that even if you survived being shot you'd more than likely have to allow a doctor saw off one of your limbs with no anesthetic in order to avoid dying from infection. >(for the southerners) you're ultimately fighting over the right to own a person as property, which you almost certainly are not rich enough to do even if you wanted to. >(for the southerners) no matter how hard you fight you're still doomed to lose because you are cut off from trade with the rest of the world, your own economy is shit, and there isn't enough food or guns or shoes for everybody.
I DONT CARE ABOUT GRAND THUMB
he is a fricking shill and sellout like ian
have a nice day
>samegayging
Please do us a favor and have a nice day
what the frick is this anon talking about
i assume its zoomer drama as soon as there is some immediate hateful connection made bewteen two entirely unrelated topics
I think it's a joke because the soldier in the OP vaguely looks like him
If you don't care, then don't randomly bring up your homosexual e-celeb drama apropos of nothing.
Probably WW1
>Nobody knows what the frick they're doing because it's a war of transitioning technology and tactics.
>Experimental chemical weapons are deployed regularly and result in agonizing injury and death
>First time in history mass artillery has ever been deployed, no frame of reference for the giant frick-off explosions that are raining down from fricking nowhere
>Most of the war is spent in a ditch where no gains are made until all your friends are slowly picked off by sniper fire and artillery shells
>You don't even know what the frick you're fighting for. There is no clear enemy, or ideology. You're just a pawn being pushed around on a map being redrawn by old men completely divorced from the horror they're inflicting on you.
In recent times:
WWI was the worst time to be a soldier.
WWII was the worst time to be a civilian in or around the conflict zone.
In antiquity:
Also even if you survived, basically nobody knew how to treat the wreck that was your psyche
>Get your nervous system, brains and blood vessels mangled.
>Some morons call it PTSD
Clearly this.
Don't forget it was the war where machine guns became commonplace and become very mobile
And you were still expected to advance through no man's land. I hope someone nails a ww1 movie one day better than 1917 and they shall not grow old
I want a first person WW1 movie like Hardcore Henry.
That could be pretty intense
>I think the problem with people trying to visualize ww1 is that even the best movies fall short at depicting how bad that war was.
Allow me to present you with a close analogy:
Imagine being a tunneler in ww1
that's some nightmare shit, in a dark crawlspace, risk of explosions collapsing it at any time, the possibility of encountering enemy counter tunnelers and having to do CQC in the dark
if it's any consolation, tunnel cqc was extremely rare. you were much more likely to get counter tunneled and have your tunnel collapse, suffocating to death.
>tfw tunnel torpedoes were a thing
>Stack a ton of ANFO in the direction your hear digging
>Stack sandbags infront of the small tunnel of ANFO
>Set it off
>Any tunnels in front of it instantly collapses sideways, crushing anyone to death standing up.
Nah frick off, ancient wars were way worse
>fight in WW1
>quick deaths from bullets or shrapnel
>suicide or mercy killing is usually possible
>POWs treated somewhat humanely
>decent chance of going home to family
>healthcare exists
vs
>fight in some tribal/imperial conflict in 500 BC
>slow and painful deaths
>could take weeks for infections to kill
>no healthcare
>brutally tortured, raped, maybe enslaved if captured
>seriously look up ancient torture methods
>low chance of ever returning home
>DISEASE man, often killed more than the enemy
It's hilarious how superstitious people were back then
It's not even much 'back then' in some parts of the world, during Mongolian invasion in the USSR Ungern refused to use artillery and machine guns until specific date because astrologers and lamas told him so.
relying on augury and omens can actually be an advantage, because they are random and guarantee that the enemy can't predict your actions
>GREAT SHAMAN OUR ENEMY ARE NOT READY FOR US, DO THE GODS FAVOUR OUR ATTACK
>the shaman rummages through the sheeps stomach to count the amount of wrinkles on the intestines
>THE OMENS SAY..... NEXT THURSDAY WILL BE A PERFECT TIME FOR BATTLE
god it must've been so much fun to be a soothsayer/oracle in those times.
just make shit up and they'll believe you because you have "i look at sheep guts for a living" in your job description
all of that stuff from 500bc still applies to ww1
>slow painful deaths
i wouldnt consider bleeding out in a mudpuddle in nomans land while your arm both legs and half of your faced blown off quick and painless
>could take weeks for infections to kill
none fatal gunshot or artillery wounds as well as trench foot often lead to gangrene and fatalities
>no healthcare
read about great war field hospitals, they arent much better if you even get to one
>brutally tortured, raped, maybe enslaved if captured
>seriously look up ancient torture methods
okay ill give you that one but still youd probably starve to death of die of disease in a pow camp if youre even taken prisoner
> low chance of ever returning home
whole villages were completely decimated because all of the young men went to war together and got annihilated in battle leaving noone to repopulate
> DISEASE man, often killed more than the enemy
typhus, staff, the spanish flu, infections, botulism, cholera and many more were incredibly common and lethal in ww1 and hygiene was all but out the window in the trenches
>whole villages were completely decimated because all of the young men went to war together and got annihilated in battle leaving noone to repopulate
AFAIK the british stopped deploying people from the same place for this reason. It used to be useful for the camaraderie and morale, but ww1 was on another level losses-wise, in a widespread manner.
yeah the british stopped the pals divisions i think in 1916ish, but countries like serbia esp had such a large amount of their population decimated that is was like back in the plague days
you have no idea what you're talking about
the us civil war. all of this in minus the chemicals, but you get to march at your enemy, do bayonet combat, get shot at with a machine gun for the first time in history, and become an amputee
Civil war was kino. Both sides came back as heros. And you could make friends with your enemies just a few years later
>you could make friends with your enemies just a few years later
It sounds like it was a stupid war.
>It sounds like it was a stupid war.
That is every war.
They say war is hell, but war is just moronic. I don't even know what the frick the current one is about and you gays have been talking about it non-stop the whole year.
If you were young enough you could also get drafted into ww2
what's incredibly wild to me is that those same men, who thought of this fricking crazy conflict, are largely responsible for the geopolitical mess we're in currently.
The chads living in the rain forests in South America, largely un-interfered with, have it figured out
This
They didn't call it the Lost Generation for nothing
Smells like a vatnik post
>obsessed with artillery and chemical weapons
>has no understanding of the world order that is worth fighting for
>thinks everything is corrupt like r*ssia
Meds. Now.
Why do you always reuse this same response? Did glavset really run out of ideas?
what are you talking about? jesus christ you need help man
I am really starting to hate you goddamned morons
Holy shit shut up you fricking homosexual
meds
>Probably WW1
I used think that until I found out the men in the western trenches were all off their heads on cocaine and opiate bills 24/7
It is not really the war, it is which side you are on, what unit and what commanding officer
>It is not really the war, it is which side you are on, what unit and what commanding officer
>Do coke
>Get arm shot off
>Your battalion dies in a big Bertha blast
>But at least you did coke!
>artillery stops
>you feel lucky to survive
>see this
Trench foot, lice, and shell shock. Over the top soldier!
Your average soldier never saw combat. So pick any really. My vote is WW1 because even if you're in a rear line defense you are still sitting in a mud hole with vermin everywhere.
Read Storm of Steel. I can’t imagine a more brutal existence than a WWI soldier.
Junger loved war. It was really refreshing to read a memoir where it didn't devolve into whining in the last chapter.
Even when their final offense turned out a bust his spirits were never broken.
It's kinda impressive about him, one of the worst kind of wars to experience and it never broke the man.
>never broke the man
He broke in a shell hole. Just got up and ran, no control at all.
Really shows that no man can hold forever.
>All those shot for cowardice
>Even though they literally could not stop it from happening
Id' say the Water Wars of 2042
>Recruiters told me I'd get a free place if I took a short trip north with the force to sharpen my teeth in the water wars.
Is this from a short story or did you just type that?
He's a time traveler silly
Anon you have a talent in writing
My vote is with the losers at Carrhae.
Folks burying their head in the dirt, hoping to suffocate before they were stabbed to death.... over hours.
All war is terrible but, those dudes definitely had nothing left to fear in Hell.
Getting wounded and left behind on the field, only to spend the night in agony then slaughtered the next morning at sunrise. Brutal stuff.
Probably one of those buck wild Chinese wars/rebellions that had like 10 gajillion casualties.
This.
>whole feudal state grows a single food staple
>rice harvest fails
>hundreds of thousands of peasants with pikes force marched into neighboring feudal kingdom
>either die of starvation, kill the enemy and take their rice.
>sometimes the enemy was equally starving, in which case both sides starve
This was basically 2000 years of mainland Chinese history
>whole feudal state grows a single food staple
People actually believe this? LMAO. Go ahead and try to grow rice on a large scale in northern China.
Your reading comprehension is shit Wumao
What's northern China today WASN'T PART OF CHINA for most of Chinese history, dumbfrick.
Good thing there's wheat. And millet. And barley.
don't forget the cannibalism
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paraguayan_War
on the Paraguay side of course, non stop anal intercourse from your surrounding neighbors
That reminds me, my great-greatfather lived through some doujin tier shit like that.
>great-greatfather was a Czechoslovakian legionnaire in Russia when he was very young.
>returned home nearly decade after the conflict ended (to his wife who faithfully waited for him and now nearly adult children) always said that he'd spent majority of time there captured
>never really wanted to talk about his experience there. And as we all know legionnaires went through major warfare, everyone always assumed he'd seen or did some horrible shit
>only on his death bed he actually retells the story to his son (my grandfather), it went like this:
>travelling across whole Russia, trying to get back home
>stuck in buttfrick nowhere Siberia with his bros
>they are trying to reach a railway station which should be somewhere around
>weather gets terrible, he gets lost in a snowstorm, all alone
>nearly dies from exposure
>barely makes it to some village, just few houses near frozen lake, nothing more
>knocks on a first door, some babushka opens it
>he explains everything
>she calls some local woman who can tend to frostbite and shit
>she arrives, pumps him full of vodka and starts tending to his wounds
>it takes few weeks until he is alright again
>finds out the village is quite literally just women, since all men went to war or died out from old age
>lady who cares for him is this middle aged woman who explains him they would really appreciate him helping around, since the life there is hard there and they need a man around
>he has nothing better to do, all his bros are gone and the enemy won't find him there neither, so he agrees
>they get to know each other better, he strategically forgets to mention the fact he has wife and kids home
>she is still a good looking woman, he is a young guy full of strength, of course they start fricking very soon
>this lady is somewhat of a central figure in the village, she knows it wouldn't work like that, so she decides not to be greedy
cont.
>few weeks later she tells him he needs to help other women too and takes him to the nearest house
>so he goes, he repairs her roof, brings shitload of firewood, fixes the well, cleans up the chimney, etc.
>she repays him with food, drink and of course sex
>he sticks around for a week or two
>then she sends him to another neighbor, where the similar process repeats
>during the day he works on women's houses, helps with hardest work, fixes things
>nights are spent in embrace of rather thirsty ladies, some of whom had been without man for years
>years pass like this, the war ends, he still sticks around there
>he described it as "paradise on god's earth"
>at this point, most of the women in the village are with his child
>one day the conscience finally catches up with him
>not knowing what is with his wife and family back home is crushing him
>he admits that to the main lady, she reluctantly agrees to help him to get back to civilization
>spents nearly two weeks walking to the nearest train station
>in a few months of time he is back home, tells everyone he was a POW the whole time
>it's not unusual, most spent years getting back, some arrived even later, many never returned at all
>gets war hero's welcome and cushy position in new czechoslovak army
Later, when he was re-telling the whole story to my grandfather (who then told it to my dad, who gave the story to me), he repeatedly said that those years in Russia were by far happiest of his life. And considering these memories were possibly last thing on his mind when he left this world, I would say he wasn't lying neither.
My god...
>I Got Stranded In A Strange Village, But There Are Only Women???
200 chapters guaranteed
imagine the doujins
I don't have to
Jesus, have you tried tracking down the village? It's all your cousins by now.
IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN ME
Why the frick does everything the Czechoslovakian Legion did sound like a god damn anime?
>protagonist from technologically developed nation gets teleported into medieval-level kingdom of orcs and various other fantasy races
it's basically isekai
there's an anecdote from jaroslav hašek (author of good soldier schweik) who joined the bolsheviks and got assigned as a commissar to some shithole in bashkortostan
the bolsheviks were doing a literacy campaign, so his commander decided to have posters put up around the city saying that everyone who didn't learn to read within 3 days would be shot, called it a day and then went back to drinking himself into a coma
>so his commander decided to have posters put up around the city saying that everyone who didn't learn to read within 3 days would be shot, called it a day and then went back to drinking himself into a coma
Quintessentially Russian approach.
>so his commander decided to have posters put up around the city saying that everyone who didn't learn to read within 3 days would be shot
holy based
What the frick, not even the best religious afterlives compare to this paradise
PrepHole bro, how far have you followed his legacy up till now? There's a war going on between Ukraine and Russia.
Hey, I remember you, anon.
>war going on
Yes, I was there earlier. A month, now I am back home. So still nowhere near his legacy I am afraid.
Cheers. I'm not that poster, but I was in that thread (had to check the archive because I was sure I've read it somewhere before). You're actually in Ukraine? Damn. I'm glad you're all right, though.
>tfw ywn be a fricktoy for the whole village of slav qts
Were we all so lucky as your great-grandfather...
reminds me of a great great uncle of mine in the second world war
>didnt come back after the war
>we thought he was dead
>turns up in the 1950s with an illness with an italian wife and kids
>his english wife was not happy
>turns out he'd been a pow and got off with a local woman there
not as good as yours but i thought i may as well share it anyway, also apparently italian pow camps were very nice!
Unironically would love to see this adapted into a movie or novel of some kind.
more than a few doujin TL guys lurk here, I'm sure with the right connections something could be arranged.
Being a Paraguayan in the War of the Tripple Alliance. Francisco Lopez was an absolute fricking lunatic.
>Paraguay is estimated to have lost up to 69% of its population, most of them due to illness, hunger and physical exhaustion, of whom 90% were male
Best war to be a survivor of. Unlimited pussy
WW1 for sure. Chem weapons were the worst way to die, and while you were waiting in your trench you could be hit by an artillery strike at any time.
There are just too many people there. Great Leap Forward wouldn't have much impact if it's done on a small scale, but unfortunately they weren't.
Nothing competes with the savagery of the Cola Wars in the suburbs of early 1980s Pennsylvania
Were you drafted, or did you volunteer, for the Pepsi Challenge?
War is Hell, for sure!
ww2 eastern front no doubt

Toss up between one of those Chinese wars where sieges led to mass starvation or eastern front or WW1 trenches
Ukraine Special Operation when you are VDV.
Probably World War II where tens of millions were tricked into fighting for the creation of Israel
You lost
Any war where you lived long enough to see what you fought for today.
Vets are probably clawing their eyes out trying to remove the nightmare goggles.
The star wars.
If you were one of the Allies in Europe there was probably better than 50% chance you were sent to your death in Normandy so that somebody else could complete the real mission objective.
gotta be some WWI trench conflict
The war between Japan and China was brutal for the Chinese.
I was about to write WW1 because battle gases were so brutal (even the eternal meme nazis didn't want to use sarin stocks they had even at the end) but the japs have always been an extremely fricking brutal enemy.

I used to be against the use of atom bomb in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but after going deep into the history of the Pacific, Chinese and Burma theaters, I wish we just turned their entire island into an irradiated prairie.
>WW1
>Crimean War
>Iran Iraq War
Anything with major naval battles while you had to wear armor that would 100% drown you.
Warfare up to the invention of bolt action rifles, which upped mobility and increased the speed of death a ton seems absolutely shit overall.
id bet it was Korea on the Korean side
or Manchuria on the chink side.
you survive all that to be swallowed up by evil in the end...it was cold and shit both places it was low food low support.....yeah sounds pretty shit.
punic wars, battle for cannae

Either WW1
>gas
>unlimited arty works
>MGs
>tanks
>planes
>mass-scale trench warfare
>OVER THE TOP
>geopolitical basis for the war being a clusterfrick
>KZ-tier conditions guaranteed if you're not an officer
or the Sino/Russo-Japanese War.
>you have to fight Japs
It was Vietnam. From the time you landed in that shithole until the time you left, you could be killed by a asiatic at any second. The soldiers were under constant threat of death from an enemy they could barely locate. Wars like WW1, which may have had more brutal fighting, still allowed soldiers time away from the front to rest.
I mean, it depends more on the job than the individual wars themselves. WW2 on the whole was the terrible, but I'd rather be a clerk in WW2 than say, a tunnel rat in Nam or a runner in WW1
Ancient chinese wars were terrifying, Imagine fighting literal cannibal warlords.
thanks for including my little fricking thing there lad, cheers!
I was thinking more about this today, I was orininally in the WW1 camp in this discussion but upon thinking about it more I think being a part of the American Civil War would also be a pretty hellish experience. Especially if you were southern
>Literally can't escape the conflict because your neighbors are potential combatants.
I'd say the 30 Year War as a German. Some regions lost like 60% of their population.
