    Probably WW1

    >Nobody knows what the frick they're doing because it's a war of transitioning technology and tactics.
    >Experimental chemical weapons are deployed regularly and result in agonizing injury and death
    >First time in history mass artillery has ever been deployed, no frame of reference for the giant frick-off explosions that are raining down from fricking nowhere
    >Most of the war is spent in a ditch where no gains are made until all your friends are slowly picked off by sniper fire and artillery shells
    >You don't even know what the frick you're fighting for. There is no clear enemy, or ideology. You're just a pawn being pushed around on a map being redrawn by old men completely divorced from the horror they're inflicting on you.

      In recent times:
WWI was the worst time to be a soldier.
WWII was the worst time to be a civilian in or around the conflict zone.

I think the problem with people trying to visualize ww1 is that even the best movies fall short at depicting how bad that war was. And the death tolls of world war 2 make people think that ww1 wasn't that bad in comparison. Most people can't comprehend the amount of trenches that were dug. I've seen numbers of 25-35k miles in total.
      >because it's a war of transitioning technology and tactics.
One day you're lobbing artillery at each other, getting gassed, then the next day you're like oh frick this plane is shooting at me and throwing bombs at me, then there's this tank coming at you that you can't do shit about.
      >Most of the war is spent in a ditch where no gains are made until all your friends are slowly picked off by sniper fire and artillery shells
And you're knee high in shit, blood, and every other bodily fluid, and the rats are eating your dead friends because you can't hike the bodies back that many miles through the trenches when you're getting shelled and gassed.

Imagine being a tunneler in ww1
that's some nightmare shit, in a dark crawlspace, risk of explosions collapsing it at any time, the possibility of encountering enemy counter tunnelers and having to do CQC in the dark

        Anonymous

if it's any consolation, tunnel cqc was extremely rare. you were much more likely to get counter tunneled and have your tunnel collapse, suffocating to death.

Nah frick off, ancient wars were way worse
      >fight in WW1
      >quick deaths from bullets or shrapnel
      >suicide or mercy killing is usually possible
      >POWs treated somewhat humanely
      >decent chance of going home to family
      >healthcare exists
      vs
      >fight in some tribal/imperial conflict in 500 BC
      >slow and painful deaths
      >could take weeks for infections to kill
      >no healthcare
      >brutally tortured, raped, maybe enslaved if captured
      >seriously look up ancient torture methods
      >low chance of ever returning home
      >DISEASE man, often killed more than the enemy

        Anonymous

Key difference is that ancient warfare was usually fairly low-casualty, often planned to cute details like "the weather sucks today, we shall fight tommorow" and the degree of violence was usually fairly limited.
Also, slavery was the driver of economy, just like your soldiers were also farmers without whom you will all starve - hence greater interest in keeping both your own and the enemy alive.
Then also very different morals and how people seen religion played a grand role.
Warfare of antiquity is generaly overmemed. With that being said, there were obviously still some absolutely nightmarish battles and wars.

People often discount that before firearms, warfare was still largely individual effort, especially for less organized groups. There was no industrial killing like today. If you want to murder the other guy, you will be the one stabbing him up, you will feel his blood, guts, piss and shit on you and you will get to look him in the eye face to face during the whole thing too. It is not so easy or clean to btfo a person with a cold weapon. Men often made war for reasons that would be very alien and plainly nonsensical to us. Warfare of old was often deeply spiritual, religious venture. Not religious war mind you, but war itself was understood as one of a way how to achieve spiritual gains otherwise limited to wise men, priests and such.
Romans especially were very different in this than how people see them today. Every war was a holy war for them, part of religious, even metaphysical. Shitload of pretty much forgotten aspects we completely ignore today.

Very different from industrial scale slaughter of WWI and WWII or today.

You shouldn't have left one important detail in your already great post. They often did ritual slaughter before the battle, asking the gods for signs and other stuff, and they would postpone the battle if the priests said no. It's hilarious how superstitious people were back then.

            >they would postpone the battle if the priests said no. It's hilarious how superstitious people were back then
It's not even much 'back then' in some parts of the world, during Mongolian invasion in the USSR Ungern refused to use artillery and machine guns until specific date because astrologers and lamas told him so.

        >slow painful deaths
i wouldnt consider bleeding out in a mudpuddle in nomans land while your arm both legs and half of your faced blown off quick and painless
        >could take weeks for infections to kill
none fatal gunshot or artillery wounds as well as trench foot often lead to gangrene and fatalities
        >no healthcare

        >brutally tortured, raped, maybe enslaved if captured

okay ill give you that one but still youd probably starve to death of die of disease in a pow camp if youre even taken prisoner
        > low chance of ever returning home
whole villages were completely decimated because all of the young men went to war together and got annihilated in battle leaving noone to repopulate
        > DISEASE man, often killed more than the enemy
typhus, staff, the spanish flu, infections, botulism, cholera and many more were incredibly common and lethal in ww1 and hygiene was all but out the window in the trenches

AFAIK the british stopped deploying people from the same place for this reason. It used to be useful for the camaraderie and morale, but ww1 was on another level losses-wise, in a widespread manner.

what's incredibly wild to me is that those same men, who thought of this fricking crazy conflict, are largely responsible for the geopolitical mess we're in currently. WWI begat Hitler, and WWII is what has finally led to this eastern bloc/western conflict. All because some old people wanted to have a stalemate in a fricking trench, and formed a larger coalition to sanction Germany into the dirt, and implant toxic social ideas into its society, which ultimately led to the ultra-Nationalist government being elected

Id' say the Water Wars of 2042

    >Recruiters told me I'd get a free place if I took a short trip north with the force to sharpen my teeth in the water wars. It's either that or starve. Where do I sign up? I've heard the stories of C*nadians killing refugees, even launching bombs on American farmers. After centuries we kept em safe from invaders, when push came to shove they tried to choke up all the water. I'm here in Lansing with the Army Division sponsored by the Infrastructure Corps down at Amazon. If I make it out alive we'll have a home on a lake. If die, what's the diff? I'm dead anyway. I'm a goner I'm a goner I'm a goner. But I'd rather be Gunner than a goner. Bombed out ruins of Flint in my rearview. Bombed out ruins of a half-dead man. Had to stop smokin meth so they'd give me a gun. A small price to pay. I don't wanna starve on my own. When we hit the border didn't see no troops. All I saw was Mounties patrolling refugee camps. They didn't even point their fricking guns at us. Outnumbered, then I heard the machinegunners gunning. Was it the one at target practice? Most of the dead were Americans fleeing what had become of us. The sergeant said "That's what they get for runnin." It felt fricked up going through their belongings. But I got a solar powered phone full of old songs and a speaker to blast for the folks in my pod. On the way to London, Ontario we found a farming village and they told us to take what we needed which was everything, and shoot what we didn't which was everything else.

That reminds me, my great-greatfather lived through some doujin tier shit like that.
            >great-greatfather was a Czechoslovakian legionnaire in Russia when he was very young.
            >returned home nearly decade after the conflict ended (to his wife who faithfully waited for him and now nearly adult children) always said that he'd spent majority of time there captured
            >never really wanted to talk about his experience there. And as we all know legionnaires went through major warfare, everyone always assumed he'd seen or did some horrible shit
            >only on his death bed he actually retells the story to his son (my grandfather), it went like this:
            >travelling across whole Russia, trying to get back home
            >stuck in buttfrick nowhere Siberia with his bros
            >they are trying to reach a railway station which should be somewhere around
            >weather gets terrible, he gets lost in a snowstorm, all alone
            >nearly dies from exposure
            >barely makes it to some village, just few houses near frozen lake, nothing more
            >knocks on a first door, some babushka opens it

Yeah, decisive Tang victory where they ate all the women and non fighting aged men in that one city was a pretty rough one. But I figure most wars are their own special hell. Vietnam with the bugs and the heat and the traps and the claustrophobia and government performing experiments on you. WWI with the running 100,000 shell bombardments that literally brain damage you if they don't kill you and the chemical weapons and the horrifying mix of Napoleonic and modern combat with horses charging machine guns, spiked clubs and shotguns etc. Generally speaking war just isn't a very good time unless you're wildly overmatching your opponent.

frick it doesn't even have to be ancient. the Taiping rebellion was an apocalyptic bloodbath and that was in the middle of the 19th century. Conservative estimates put it at 20-30 million dead civilians and soldiers. Possible it was significantly higher. That's as bad as WW1.

I’ve often wondered how many of these Chinese casualty numbers are true. It seems like every time someone sneezes in China tens of millions of them die. How is it that every other rebellion in China dwarves the largest European wars in terms of bloodshed?

probably anything that involves getting eviscerated or impaired and left on a battlefield to rot before modern medicine was designed. Bullets are a blessing.

The Iran-Iraq War was its own special hell.
WW1 tier tactics using modern equipment (including the first helicopter duels) topped off with Arab incompetence on both sides
Oh and some chemical weapon usage plus child soldiers

Toss up between one of those Chinese wars where sieges led to mass starvation or eastern front or WW1 trenches

It’s living thru any major long siege battle ending with a sack (on the losing side ofc). The mental strain of starvation and constant siege tactics (loud noises, fires, etc etc) and the necessary sacrifices make it literally inhuman. Basically concentration camp levels ending in complete annihilatiokn since putting up a siege defense meant once the siege is done your city will get fricked soooooo hard people will sing sad songs about it for centuries

It has to be either ww1 or ww2, with probably an edge to ww1. Trench warfare was an absolutely brutal slog and they saw use of some of the worst and most unethical """""weapons""""" that have ever existed. WW2 was also insane mostly because of the enormous scale of everything and the sheer volume of carnage, but also there were a number of individual battles that were particularly bleak. If you were one of the Allies in Europe there was probably better than 50% chance you were sent to your death in Normandy so that somebody else could complete the real mission objective.

I was about to write WW1 because battle gases were so brutal (even the eternal meme nazis didn't want to use sarin stocks they had even at the end) but the japs have always been an extremely fricking brutal enemy.

especially if you were in one of the elite NRA divisions. Also, to a lesser extent, the same in all Jap occupied territories except maybe Taiwan.
I used to be against the use of atom bomb in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but after going deep into the history of the Pacific, Chinese and Burma theaters, I wish we just turned their entire island into an irradiated prairie.

IDK, but ancient wars had no social stigma about torturing prisoners for amusement, enslaving/raping your family, raping you, enslaving you, and genocide was done as a matter of course if taking slaves wasn't worthwhile.

Supply lines were shit and starvation could wipe out armies on the move. No heat, but you have to be out in the winter. No AC. No medicine. Shitty diet. Shit yourself because latrines are near the water source.

Fear if you lose because your infant son is definitely getting smashed against the nearest rock before they rape your wife.

Only warfare that might be more brutal is pre-civilization because it's more common and there is a decent amount of cannibalism.

Remaining HG tribes have homicide rates well above Europe from 1914-1945. Like 15-33% of men who make it to adulthood will die in violent competition.

Single day battlefield deaths also used to be significantly higher. For all the advanced in firepower, deaths are actually down, and deaths as a percentage of the population have gone down dramatically. Just the Thirty Years War killed a greater percentage of Europe than both World Wars, by a significant margin, and that was surrounded by other major wars.

this is the real answer. i would hate to fight at a time when humanity's inner chimp was completely unrestrained and able to do all the fricked up sadistic shit it could imagine. i mean the Japanese and the Russians still behaved this way during WW2 but even they had a few limits that ancient armies did not have.

Anything with major naval battles while you had to wear armor that would 100% drown you.

Warfare up to the invention of bolt action rifles, which upped mobility and increased the speed of death a ton seems absolutely shit overall.

    punic wars, battle for cannae

The Romans were henceforth enclosed in a pocket with no means of escape. The Carthaginians created a wall and began to systematically massacre them. Polybius wrote: "as their outer ranks were continually cut down, and the survivors forced to pull back and huddle together, they were finally all killed where they stood."

As Livy described, "So many thousands of Romans were dying... Some, whom their wounds, pinched by the morning cold, had roused, as they were rising up, covered with blood, from the midst of the heaps of slain, were overpowered by the enemy. Some were found with their heads plunged into the earth, which they had excavated; having thus, as it appeared, made pits for themselves, and having suffocated themselves."

nearly six hundred legionaries were slaughtered each minute until darkness brought an end to the bloodletting.

It was Vietnam. From the time you landed in that shithole until the time you left, you could be killed by a asiatic at any second. The soldiers were under constant threat of death from an enemy they could barely locate. Wars like WW1, which may have had more brutal fighting, still allowed soldiers time away from the front to rest.

I mean, it depends more on the job than the individual wars themselves. WW2 on the whole was the terrible, but I'd rather be a clerk in WW2 than say, a tunnel rat in Nam or a runner in WW1

I was thinking more about this today, I was orininally in the WW1 camp in this discussion but upon thinking about it more I think being a part of the American Civil War would also be a pretty hellish experience. Especially if you were southern
    >Literally can't escape the conflict because your neighbors are potential combatants.
    >Still fighting with basically firing squads, dudes lined up to shoot at each other and watch each other drop dead before running in to gore one another with bayonets. Sometimes canons would blast through the line and completely blow dudes apart.
    >Terminal performance of the bullets of the day were so nasty and medical technology so poor that even if you survived being shot you'd more than likely have to allow a doctor saw off one of your limbs with no anesthetic in order to avoid dying from infection.
    >(for the southerners) you're ultimately fighting over the right to own a person as property, which you almost certainly are not rich enough to do even if you wanted to.
    >(for the southerners) no matter how hard you fight you're still doomed to lose because you are cut off from trade with the rest of the world, your own economy is shit, and there isn't enough food or guns or shoes for everybody.

I'd say the 30 Year War as a German. Some regions lost like 60% of their population.
