It gives a chance for a grenade to bounce off to the instead of blowing up on the lap of the gunner.
Obviously works only on the simplest versions of 'nade drones that do not have touch trigger, but eh.

Yeah but don't you have to admit that it's pretty desperate for the Russians to be doing this? We already know the Ukrainians are desperate, they've been begging the world for more and more arms and help for a year now.

When did the US ever do something like this during their invasions of Iraq or Afghanistan? Or any other modern war? Aren't Russia a peer?

In the book "The Fighting 69th" the US NY ARNG uparmored their vehicles with "hillbilly" armor before they deployed to Iraq. Beyond that, the US never dug out ancient APCs and slapped a Naval gun on it lol. I'm interested to see it shoot tho.

Because Ukraine's army was dirt poor and they're on the defense, so some measure of desperation is understandable.

Unironically yes to all of your post because Ukraine was an Africa-tier post-Soviet frick-up that leveled-up and it's impressive to chart the ingenuity they pull out their asses along the way.
Russia was the "second army of the world" in most everyone's mind right up until March of last year, with T-80BVMs and T-90Ms and Su-35s and Su-57s and Armatas. Now they're welding fricking naval turrets to fricking MT-LBs.

Sorry, it's just after somaliland threads I have a difficult time with anyone calling anything of mexican cartels level and above "Africa-tier", they just aren't. Let's call them "Arab-tier", that would be closer to the truth, ok?

          Anonymous

The reality is when people think "africa tier" they actually mean rhodesian/afrikaaner/soldier of fortune mercenary equipment. Gear and militaria operated out of expedience and ingenuity in the face of global embargo. Actual Africa doesn't have bubba'd technicals and LaVs. One Hind gunship has decided wars.

The real african on african warfare is somalia vs somalialand where the US state department calculated a literal single shipping crate of smallarms ammunition will turn the tide of the war in favor of the 'Legitimate government". African military history is just empire of dust played out with machetes.

is this a new cope because this is the second or third time i've seen this *word for word* reply. Legit thought I'd clicked on an older thread and not realized.

spoiler alert: one of them (dune buggy with ATGM, fast, effective, fits with tactics proven successful in this war) is good because it *works*, and the other (ML-TB, 1950s AFV with *salvaged naval turret* sticking up like a big "frick me with every ATGM you have" signpost, ) is a sign of desperation and/or someone huffing too many metal fumes while kitbashing Cold War soviet vehicles. And that's before you consider how the latter is also appearing in what was supposed to be one of the *best militaries in the world*.

You do, it's just that you do it under the guide of "foreign investment". Build a factory in Vladivostok and employ some locals, but obviously you'll need to send some Chinese nationals over as well just to make sure everything's running properly. Maybe loan Russia some money after the war to rebuild their economy; no need to worry about paying it back, China is generous and willing to forgive all the debt in exchange for a long term lease of Outer Mongo-- Siberia.

in these kinds of lawless stronk ape regimes rule of law does not exist. If the changs cant back up their "investments" in hard power vatniks will simply come up with a new "law" to take their invetments away from them at the first opportunist moment. Changs do that too to outsiders in their home turf starting the moment foreign investment wants to move in and culminating with IP theft followed by expulsion of the original foreigner to be replaced with local copy cat.

They need hard control over Siberia if they want to drain it completely of anything that is worth there. Like fresh water reserves.

I kinda doubt the Russians are going to have much "hard power" left once this is over. Besides decimating their working aged men, they've basically burned through their inventory of armored vehicles and artillery. The PLA may be outfitted with Chinkshit, but at least with Chinese corruption there is an attempt to deliver something that resembles a working product.

As long as Russia remains a pariah on the world stage, they're going to be relying on China for manufactured goods so there really isn't much they can use in negotiations with China.

            Anonymous

as long as you have governmental control hard power can manifest in new obscure rules they use to nationalize chinese investments. Not a single gun needed aside from the armed rent a cops taking over the objects. From that point chinks either have to move in with muscle, lose face appearing weak or try the rather ineffective embargos which still wont get large scale, hard cash, hard asset investments back. Like factories or dams or canals. Shit like consumer products market is peanuts in real value these kind of hard assets hold.

For vatnikstan there is not only just china, india is more then happy to simp for them as well ass the rest of the turd world which provides ample avenues for selling their cheap oil. As long as they can transport it.

Putin is aware of this threat, it's the biggest real threat to Russia. As such Putin has done 2 key things to appear China in the east 1, putin providing chinese workers in the millions are in eastern russia, despite the protests of "Russians" there.
2, Putin sells Russia oil and gas to China at less than the cost to extract it - therefore if China did invade and took the fields it would cost China more to extract itself and supply.
So the CCP is a dictatorship, the mechanism by which it holds power is keeping a single promise to Chinese people; it will grow economy and increase incomes for the millions of peasant farmers still in China. economically Putin has satisfied the CCP interest better than the CCP could by invading, therefore no invasion.

So, question: The lower part of the turret, the bit that would be below the deck when mounted on a ship - is that armored? Is the gunner just going to get shot in the dick or what?

None of it is armored. The front of the turret is 4mm mild steel sheet.

I would unironically prefer an HMG with a good armor steel gun shield over this joke of a turret. Unless they stuck an auxiliary hydraulic power unit in the MTLB, this is going to be manually laid, too.

Are these things actually going to be used in combat or is it a morale boost like those stupid trenches in the Crimean beach?

      Anonymous

      >morale boost like those stupid trenches in the Crimean beach?
That isn't a morale boost, they're literally evacuating military personnel families and other VIPs as we speak, fully bracing for combat. If anything, its the opposite of a morale boost. What kind of morale boost says "we are going to be pushed back all the way here soon"?

As for the MTLB's with a naval gun... it would take some kind of "moronic genius" (i don't know a better term to describe it) to make it work. Genius that you can get a naval turret to work on an old APC, but moronic because it's the dumbest fricking idea ever and has the worst silhouette known to man. Who even knows. maybe they're just decoys.

The thing anyone should be asking isn't why this thing exists, it's "why don't they have better than this". Isn't that the point of the big frick off victory parades? To show they have actual vehicles specifically for this purpose so they don't look like they're scrounging for whatever they can in a scrapyard? Why the frick did they feel the need to do this? Unless of course, they really are ass fricked to find anything good and those parades were only but purchasing catalogues for foreign buyers that they only hoped to ever make small batches of to keep the economy growing while they bluff their way through everything with the threat of "large scale use" of said vehicles while trying their best to keep shoe stringing the rusted hulks they still have running.

Modern Russia is a death cult of WW2 worshipers living like parasites off the corpse of the USSR. Almost every "new" weapons system they've developed is really an extension of a Soviet plan, only now they don't have the skill to make more than a few for parades and air shows.

Russia's armor supply is basically one T14 every year, one T90M every month, and whatever 50-year-old artifacts they can drag out of Siberia and repaint.

25mm autocannons surely could have been remounted into a more useful form factor.

If they actually did have hundreds of them and ammunition production, in the cyberpunk bubba war that'd be the kind of candidate to turn into something wild like an autonomous defensive turret. Hobbyists can make airsoft guns shoot human IR signatures/movement with an arduino, where is the manmade horrors beyond our comprehension of killbots cobbled out of 70 year old war surplus.
For anti drone warfare, sound triangulation seems like something static defenses could build autonomous systems around. Combined with movement and IR sensors it'd be a counter for line of sight non aircraft air warfare.

No shit, but the gun inside the useless naval turret is a 1" belt fed autocannon. Throw it on a gimble mount with stepper motors, cheap thermal optic, slap an arduino on it and make it shoot at flying battery heat signatures or AoD a corridor by shooting at movement. The code for it is on gitlab as some highschool science project. Parts are all sold by alibaba or direct from china.

The amount of effort to weld this shit up in the mind of a wood alcohol addled vatnik may make sense compared to putting together anything "high tech", but that's also why they're getting grenade spammed by Iphone controlled package delivery drones.

The 600,000+ casualties figure looks way too high to me, and my suspicion is further raised by not knowing the methodology behind those numbers.
But consider how "over 16,000" sets nothing more than a lower bound. 16,000 is the number that an independent news agency (Meduza, I think it was) could verify based on nothing more than publicly available information linking names to confirmed deaths. And while it includes the mobilized, I suspect "soldiers" doesn't include PMCs, Rosgvardia, Chechen militias, Donbabweans, or a bunch of other factions.
        >Russia's total irretrievable losses which include wounded, killed or missing people may amount to at least 144,500 people.
That's another "at least", and given that 300,000 mobiks were needed for backfill just a few months ago, I don't find 144,500+ unreasonable at all.

You see, while the Ukies are suppressed by Terminators, rockets and other artillery- hunkering down in their trenches, soon to become their graves- these autocannon vehicles will enter the area and back towards the trenches while firing downwards into the masses of defenseless and shocked Ukrainians.
