I'm wondering if this would be of any use at all with a helmet that has a ballistic visor. Do you think a IIIa visor and this thing (presumably also IIIa) would slow a bullet (let's say .223 or 7.62x39 or so) enough that it will stop in this face shield thing, or will it only make the inevitable headshot worse since it may not be fast enough to immediately kill you and just splinter into your whole face?

I would guess it's right on the edge. I've seen youtube videos of level 3A armor being stacked up for level 3 armor, and it's usually 2-4 layers.

        Anonymous

Might not be completely useless then, just mostly. I can't imagine you could look down with that shit on your face.
Picrel would be a more ideal ballistic face cover for me, though I think it only works in conjunction with the pilot helmet.

7.62x39 would smack right through 2-3 layers of kevlar. It's stops around layer 6 and even then the backface deformation is so big it likely kills the wearer. Short barrel .223's stop at around 3 layers of IIIA and longer barrels around 5, the backface deformation is minimal in both

          Anonymous

a ballistic face shield of lexan+plexi, however, is not kevlar. I would not be surprised if the face shield would expand the round enough for the kevlar to catch it, at least for the short barrel .223, but I could be wrong.

            Anonymous

if you look at how these shields fail, they usually do a good job of breaking up the bullet first: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ka6OFphBBpI&t=7m

I'm sure if you stack up a few of the OP face shields behind a lexan+plexi faceshield, you can catch .223 effectively. I've worn the lexan+plexi level 3A ones before and they have enough room to stack a good 50mm of additional armor unless you have some kinda hellboy chin.

the next-level face shields will use aluminum oxynitride as a strike face over plexi and lexan, and should offer practical transparent rifle protection that isn't too heavy to carry (but dissipating the energy safely, I think you will need flexible struts connecting down to the collarbone area and anchored to the shoulders)

No, for a simple reason: it may not scratch, but it is too brittle and will shatter.

        Anonymous

that is literally the whole point of strike faces backed by softer armor lmao

you can just put a little lexan in front of it for small impacts.
