Most of Europe figured the Russians would gradually mellow like all the other eastern european countries and join up. What they didn't consider was that Russia is run by the biggest klelptocrat boomer russians to possibly exist, which has absolutely no remorse for the horrors the Soviets inflicted on their so-called brother countries in Eastern Europe.

            >Most of Europe figured the Russians would gradually mellow like all the other eastern european countries and join up
There was also another angle and that's that selling them weapons meant that they didn't need the industry to make their own and didn't maintain the technological industry that would keep pace with the west and develop new weapons.
Hence why Amata/Su-75 and their navy are all such shit shows.

Then, when sanctions turn the taps off, Russia is fricked and decades late to try and reboot their MIC and has to do it under sanctions.

Russia’s interest in Ukraine — securing pipeline access to Europe and stopping development of Ukrainian energy reserves — remains, and in fact is stronger than ever after being hit with sanctions and having Europe ripped off their gas and oil exports. Ukraine is being kept afloat both militarily and financially by the West, and politically by suspension of elections — so there’s no actual incentive for either side to compromise at all in a negotiated settlement. US has Ukraine’s back and Russia continues to make progress while successfully evaded / softened much of the sanctions allowing them to keep going. Ukraine is spending like 27% of their GDP on military but they know they can keep that up because the U.S. and EU will bail them out financially. Even though the manpower situation is bad it’s also not critical — and with elections now cancelled the government doesn’t have to worry about internal political pressure, at least not until it gets super bad. So there’s no reason whatsoever for the Ukrainian government to compromise on anything.

So what has to break the political solution deadlock?
    1. Russia not being able to pay for the effort any longer, forcing them to seek compromise even if it’s just a temporary peace.
    2. Ukraine’s government about to experience total loss from any angle — militarily, political, financial, etc, forcing them to compromise in order to stop them from losing power totally.

It would be Crimea on a scale we haven't seen yet. There are dozens of bases, depots, and staging areas just across the border that Ukraine can't hit with ATACMs or GMLRS. If the US were to suddenly give the go ahead or Ukraine stopped giving a shit, we'd see a MASSIVE spike in smoking incidents all across the Russian border territories.

As has already been said, Russia's oil industry would get wrecked pretty much immediately. The day the Ukrainians get full clearance I'd bet every oil/fuel depot and refinery in range would be targeted. Same with airfields, factories, training grounds, supply depots, and more.

Russia erased any diction between Ukrainian and Russian territory with the annexations. Western weapons are already being used against Russians in Russian territories according to Russia. According to Russia Mariupol (and even Ukranian-occupied Kherson) are as much Russian as Moscow or St.P so by what logic would attacking Moscow with the weapons already being used against Mariupol make any difference?

      Anonymous

      >so by what logic would attacking Moscow with the weapons already being used against Mariupol make any difference?
The west RESPECT internationally recognized borders and will not recognize what Russia believe to be their new border.
That's the only difference it make and do no make prevent Ukraine using Western weapons on internationally recognized Russian soils.

        >The west RESPECT internationally recognized borders and will not recognize what Russia believe to be their new border.
Anon's point was clumsily made, they're not saying that the borders are genuine or that the West should recognise them.
They're saying that Russia "believes" that Donbas/Crimea are Russian and therefore their complaints about western weapons being used in Russia are irrational since they're already being used in "Russia", according to Russian definitions anyway.

They're attempting to highlight the irrationality of Russia's claims rather than agreeing them. In an IRL conversation, their words would probably have a lot of airquotes around them which don't come across so well in text.

id say the damage is nearly unlimited. from power infrastructure to depots, military industrial complex, government and administration buildings
the whole country is bascially defenseless, russian AD is incompetent and insufficient, with maybe the execption of moscow itself
in principle the damage would only be limited by the number of weapons delivered and the type and severity of damage ukraine wants to inflict
i severly doubt this will happen, as it would move us a significant step closer to actual nuclear interchange
