Fanny, in early days, wagner consisted of veterans and professional mercenaries. But, all this Black folk are dead like vdv.

Now new wagner consistent of penal battalions that storm enemy with human waves regardless of loss.

Yeah I know about the prisoners but is there any information about how many of them have died?
That they're recruiting like that could just be that they need to expand because what they have now obviously isn't enough to win, even if they still had most of their "good" soldiers left.

        Anonymous

I'd assume at least half of their "good" soldiers are irrecoverable losses. They're deniable assets, mercs getting killed raises less of a fuss. And Wagner, Redut, etc expanded their hiring after the Kiev retreat, then dropped requirements at around the "operational pause" after the fall of Severodonetsk - before they started recruiting prisoners they had already dropped the requirement for military experience in their recruitment ads.
Assume they took heavy losses, particularly with the guys in the reserves or who had military experience rather than the spooks and secret squirrels, now Prigozhin is trying to keep them alive to maintain a loyal cadre just in case shit goes south. It's the nobodies and prisoners who are dying now.

Why would they go to maximum security prisons if they just needed to expand?

that's exactly why they're going to prisons. i'm guessing those prisoners aren't eligible to be conscripted or it'd cause too many problems or whatever, and they absolutely can't sign a contract.

That sounds like aiding conscription, not expanding in any capacity.

The Ukrainians and Russians all ignore the Geneva Conventions but are signatories to it. They can't use literal mercenaries.

Also Wagner isn't considered a mercenary group anyways, by Geneva because they only have one client which is the Russian government. It's a legal fiction. Wager is an extension of the Russian government.

On the whole they're more or less just the Russian Army if they weren't completely incompetent and could actually afford to kit out their troops with their better gear, though they're starting to get worn down. Even still the average Wagner Group soldier is better equipped and trained than the average conscript, even if he is just some dumbshit trying to get out of a prison sentence. They have all the gear they need to fight like the normal army but they don't coordinate with them at all and they're paid by the amount of land captured so they don't do anything that's strategically important. They just try to gobble up as many empty Ukie fields as possible. They're just another wasted Russian asset.

All shitposts aside, they operate same equipment as the ruski army, this includes tank, artillery/SPGs and even aviation. That one shot down retired 60+ years old pilot general Kanamat Botashev was on wagner contract.

Wagner is literally just a branch of the Russian Ministry of Defense. They train at Russian military bases, use their logistics, fly on their planes, use their vehicles, etc. Only difference is they only recruit prior military males over 25. It's dredges of society. Their only client is the Russian Ministry of Defense.

They're not really mercenaries, that's against the Geneva Conventions. They're not really PMCs, they're not private. They're just a little branch of the military with a different pay scale and insurance policy. It's literally a Russian government organization only slightly different organization so people can pretend they're not.

Blackwater owned their own training facilities.
They had civilian helicopters and trucks.
Wagner gets real military equipment like tanks, IFVs and combat helicopters. They even had Su-25s.

Geneva convention has probably had less real world impact than they would have liked it to have on paper. Russia especially doesn't care for it and who is going to take them to task for it after the war? If they lose, the Ukrainians will righteously hang the scum responsible. If they miraculously win, who punishes a triumphant nation?

For a serious answer they operate soviet helos and a couple su25s in Africa so probably also in ukr as well as cargo planes and air defense shit like pantsir. I dont think they have big guns as the nature of their ops aren't really grinding assaults but im sure theres mortars and other stuff. If your wondering if they could fight independently against ukr the answer is probably not

Wagner is really the Platonic ideal of the Russian military model, sending human trash to die in senseless frontal assaults while an oligarch lines his pockets with public money.

Before Ukraine: experienced veterans and former special forces member with good gear and equipment deployed in special operations were the russian goverment dosen't want to deploy its own troops.

At the beginning of Ukraine invasion: same as before but used as stormtroopers to take difficult positions.

Now: by abusing the fact that Wagners don't count in the death toll of the Russian army they have been used for almost all high risk offensive operations, the experienced guys are mostly dead and have been replaced by inexperienced conscripts out of prisons with minimal training. This resulted in Wagner having to get either regular soldiers into it's ranks with a big pay increase or to get anyone they get from the inmate prison population to have a barely functional military force.

Regarding equipment they do get equipment transferred to them from the Russian army howeithry increasingly lack the trained personell to operate them.

They are now practically a penal battalion with regular soldiers as officers/commissars.
They officers are allowed to kill anyone disobeying orders on the spot with no consequences.

I feel like most Russian units at this point are just conscript pig pens with the few remaining contract guys acting as NCOs.

        Anonymous

No there are still plenty of regulars in particular in Kherson. But casualties keep growing.

However the need for NCO for the conscripts will likely require a lot of experienced soldiers to be repositioned as babysitting the new conscripts.
