Prevent Ukraine from immediately following up on withdrawal from Kherson since Russians have shitty thin lines of defense rather then thick ones with multiple fall back positions. Desperate attempt to prevent a rout where then Ukraine follows up and TEMPOTEMPOTEMPOs russians for another thousand square miles. Also a bit or spite, typical orc "haha you got you territory back but we fricked it up!"

Finally for internal consumption they may well claim Ukraine did it and THAT is the reason for the retreat I mean tactical regrouping.
    >hohols are monsters and warcrimed the dam we never imagined they would flood a civilian city so our forces had to withdraw to avoid their america-isis-nazi tactic!!
    etc

That is the thing with russhits, no matter what they frick it up. Flooding something is still better than having russhits living on your land for a year or, god forbid, longer.

They're retreating over the ground that will be flooded, at the start of Winter, a semi-frozen swamp will make a really good defensive barrier and they'll set up their trenches at the dry edge of it.

Unlikely to be tank or bushmaster rushes over or through the swamp, so they're dealing with infantry mostly.

In reality, they'll just be naded by night-drones with thermo until their lines thin enough to penetrate.

This. Everyone who claims "oh vatniks wouldn't do that cuz crimea" forget Russians probably already see it as a foregone conclusion. So if they can squeeze some advantage or at least "revenge" out of it might as well while they can. Vatniks are disgusting but that's how they've behaved this entire war.

Ukraine can't shut the water off because Russia blew up the dam months ago that was already blocking water into Crimea.

This is what Ukraine used to temporarily block the canal while they constructed a proper dam. It was just a pile of those white bags which are full of dirt.

All nuclear power plants have a secondary reservoir that provides the bare minimum for SCRAM cooling. It's like a recessed "sink" that exists below the water line, for this exact scenario.

Yes makes sense russian love blowing up their own infrastructure for no reason. Its definately not ukrainians shelling the nuclear powerplant that russians are occupying and russians definately went right up to the swedish coast just to blow up a pipeline that starts in saint petersburg. Makes perfect sense russian do it because they are evil and stupid of course.

You gays aren't thinking moronic enough
The Russians are going to blow the dam to cover their retreat, only for the subsequent flood to drown the retreating Russians themselves
They will then declare that this is proof it was the Ukrainians who blew up the dam, despite Russian state media having earlier run reports celebrating the strategic genius of their damn busting plan along with video footage of Russian troops performing the demolition.
In response to the losses Putin will fire "General Armageddon" for his failures and replace him with "General Superapocalypse" and vatniks will flood the board proclaiming this to be the final doom of Ukrainian resistance

Russia's propaganda news show did an interview with some guy in Kherson who said, basically, that Ukraine was going to use chemical weapons (he specifically said 'prohibited weapons such as chemical weapons) and that Ukraine was going to blow the dam.

Based on all evidence, if Russia is claiming Ukraine will do it, then Russia is going to do it.
