They got fricked twice in Zaporizhia in January-February, at Vulhedar and barely managed to push back a little on the Kremina-Svatove front.

I explained it ~6 months ago but /k/ope is full of redditors now that think reddit headlines are real. Everything I said played out exactly as I said.

Penals and undesirables will be used in the vanguard to take the brunt of casualties. Troops that are half competent will be siphoned off into a reserve of veterans to use later. Heavy reliance on artillery to apply attrition to Ukrainian forces. Russia uses its best troops for cleanup or flanking maneuvers, generally low casualty rate conflict.UAF is American trained and put their best in the vanguard. So quite the opposite of Russia. This is a typical Eastern vs Western dichotomy of organization and it has to do with regime stability but that's another story.

By most neutral observers, it looks like there is maybe 120k Ukrainian casualties and 180k Russian casualties after a year of fighting. Or a ratio of 12:18. This is more sustainable long term for Russia as Putin has 135 million to recruit from and Zelensky has around 25-30 million depending on how many Ukrainians remained.

    >So what is the Russian army doing?
gaining veterans while whittling away Ukraine's. This is exactly how Red Army handled the Wehrmacht over the first ~2 years.
I think this is going to end the same way as I said 6 months ago, which is Ukraine will lose Western backers and be forced to capitulate some eastern territory.

and as I said 6 months ago, the point isn't Bakhmut, it's setting up attrition zones for an efficient exchange of casualties. 12:18 is very good for Russia when it has 5x the population of Ukraine. Ukraine was stupid to keep rotating battalions out of there, they grinded down groups they spent 6 months training in UK. Totally moronic, it's exactly what RU wanted but Zelensky didn't want to take the PR hit with losing Bakhmut.

The only cope for this piss-poor performance is pretending Ukraine can't collapse another front or two or three in the Spring.

What do you mean it stopped working? You send wave after wave, until the enemy runs out of ammo, nothing changed, except the economic balance. Now it's easier to buy ammo than 100 years ago, but the birth rates are shitty, so it seems that there will be always more bullets than men.

The fact that russia had the upper hand in the beginning because no one actually expected them to invade. So the fact that ukrainians are beating russia on murder count shows their tactics really are human waves

Human meat waves don't work the way they are presented in fiction or entertainment. The germans produced billions of rounds just for small arms not counting artillery and so on.
Same goes for today, pretty much any developed country can produce more rounds than people in the entire world.
They use mainly artillery (of a sort)to suppress the enemy while they advance, this is how its done with pretty much any advancement, not just
WW1 was kinda moronic not gonna lie.

I could see that. The only negative news I felt had some kind of credibility were finnish state news YLE interviewing a confirmed finnish "high-ranking" officer training Ukrainians who sounded a bit doomer talking about their tactics, leadership and combat techniques and being incapable of fast action so they get bogged down in artillery warfare. Most of his complaints seemed to have to do with them being very badly trained and taking new skill doctrines as criticism rather than improvement.

Standard Russian way of arguing, find out what's despised and call them that regardless of how little sense it makes. It's how we got to a situation where the stated goal of the invasion is to de-nazify a democratic country lead by a israelite.

What are you even talking about?

      Anonymous

I don't buy your conclusion because it's missing a couple key details. Casualty rates haven't stayed consistent throughout the war, in Bakhmut the US is estimating it is one to seven in the Ukrainians favor, it can't be good in Vuhledar either. Back when Russia had their best men, their best equipment and an overwhelming advantage in armor, air power and artillery they were certainly hurting the Ukrainians more.
The fact Ukrainian personal losses are being replaced by NATO trained troops, Ukrainian equipment losses are being replaced with Western systems and new weapons like JDAM, Switchblade 600 and GLSDB are flowing in while Russia is replacing more and more lost personal with mobniks, more weapons with 1960's version and they are going through an ammo crunch. Unlike Ukraine, Russia's greatest weakness is that if their stockpiles of weapons and ammo deplete and they can't get massive outside assistance, they are screwed. It doesn't matter how many poorly men you throw at a problem if said problem has all the artillery.

Figuring out how to get out of this mess. I recently read a bit about the great northern war and the start of it was basically the same.
    >Peter sends army to beat sweden.
    >gets beaten to a pulp several times.
    >needs foreign aid and instructiors to make his army not complete utter shit.
    >finally beat sweden by having the longer breath and the european powers are favouring you more than the swedes.
    >by war'a end, russia lost so many men, that Peter had to bribe foreign men to settle in bumfrick nowhere to replenish his losses.

Only this time the russians get clowned by a poor eastern euro natiob that on paper should have folded withon days.
Instead the ukies recieve western hand me downs and maphacks.
The russian army is in for a very tough fight. Unless shoigu pulls something out of his hat, the ukies will soon be very hard to stop.

It seems like the protests and killing of conscription officers made Putin rethink the mass deployment of conscripts aka the regular army to the front. He's probably hedging his bets on the Wagnergays and penal battalions to turn the tide to be able to give a favorable position for the regular army to attack again. I doubt it will work in any way, Putin is still bleeding his arm reserves dry for this bet, and even if it succeeds the regulars wont have much to form a mechanized assault with, thus returning to a worst place than he started out with
