What is the best way to put someone to sleep without threatening their life?

What is the best way to put someone to sleep without threatening their life? I've read up on how chloroform is no longer used and sevoflurane is used instead. What if one were to spread sevoflurane around a room as a gas through a smoke machine of sorts, would that work? This is purely out of curiosity.

It's never easy. Anything which is capable of "knocking someone out" also carries a high risk of killing them, so getting the dosage right is very difficult. Too little and it doesn't do shit. Too much and you kill everyone in the room.

What if you were to put gas masks on them or move them away from the gas right after they were knocked out, would that work?

As long as you stop them from breathing it in as soon as they get knocked out, they should be fine, right?

Not if they inhale a lethal dose before passing out in a manner similar to how fuckloads of people die of alcohol poisoning because they drank a lethal dose before passing out.

so there is no such chemical where the gap between falling asleep and dying is large enough to where one can stop them from breathing in anymore once they've fallen asleep and they'll be safe?

Not in any reliably workable way for whatever dumb fantasy you're trying to rationalize.

Plenty of such chemicals exist, but human physiology isn't that simple. Do you know the person's weight and height? Do you know if they have a tolerance to the drug you're planning on using? Can you accurately measure and administer a dose that will put them to sleep without killing them even if you know their weight and tolerance? Do you know what other drugs they're taking that may interact with the one you're going to administer? Get a single one of these wrong and they're dead. Also, please refrain from posting again until you turn 18, it's against the rules.

Serious answer. No, anything that will effectively anesthetize someone will more than likely kill them if you are untrained.

The biggest killer will be aspiration. There’s a reason you’re not to eat anything before surgery. People will end up vomiting and aspirating shortly after losing consciousness. I can go into more detail if you want, but that’s the short answer.

Depends on what you’re trying to do. Incapacitate a solitary person? A sub therapeutic dose of muscle paralytic would be enough to seriously weaken without affecting respiration too seriously.

A group of people? Nearly impossible unless you don’t care if they die. The Russians sort of attempted it with the school siege using aerosolized fentanyl. They didn’t tell the paramedics on scene what was used so loads of people needlessly died. Anyway “knock out gas” is a meme.

how long do you think someone who inhaled too much could last before getting medical attention?

Varies immensely with an entire laundry list of factors, including effectively pure random chance.
Start gassing people and you will get corpses.

probably something like a deliriant such as BZ or perhaps aerosolized ketamine would incapacitate without affecting respiration. Not as much aspiration risk with ketamine either.

                >or perhaps aerosolized ketamine would incapacitate without affecting respiration. Not as much aspiration risk with ketamine either.
I can think of one case straight up where someone who got a ketamine injection by a medic on behest of law enforcement died. Going from injecting a precise amount to spraying it around and letting the target breathe in whatever amount he ends up inhaling...

do you know of any liquids that can knock people out quickly? and also, is the whole rag over the mouth thing bullshit or does that actually work?

                Anonymous

Volatile anesthetics are supplied in liquid form and then pass through a vaporizer to become an inhaled gas. Anesthesia machines are expensive and deliver a precise concentration of gas because you can kill someone otherwise.

The cloth rag makes for good tv, but it’s mostly bullshit. Ether masks (ye olde anesthesia) were a metal screen stuffed with cotton gauze that ether was dripped onto. Probably closest to a cloth rag and that’s in a controlled environment.

Anesthetizing a full grown man using gas alone is challenging enough in a controlled OR environment with a cooperative patient.

                >do you know of any liquids that can knock people out quickly?
There's plenty, but they're also going to kill people at a frightening rate if they aren't carefully administered by a highly trained medical specialist.

                >and also, is the whole rag over the mouth thing bullshit or does that actually work?
That's just another way to gas someone as they inhale the vapours form the volatile liquid on the rag. Gonna have to be something pretty damn potent on the rag though (ie easy to lethally overdose), and odds are it won't be as quick as in the movies no matter what you put on it.

I think there’s more to that story. It doesn’t add up. Not saying that ketamine had no role either.
In my mind I’m envisioning a relative low concentration. Enough to render someone combat ineffective, but not really “knocking them out” like op wants.

You’re right of course. It’s nearly impossible to get the ideal concentration. There’s no way at least one person doesn’t die.

                >but not really “knocking them out” like op wants.
Ie not relevant in this context.

A mug of hot milk with honey and a nice lullaby does the trick for my nephews.
As for drugs, the pharmacological line between effective anaesthesia and effective lethal dose is hair thin. In addition to that, almost all drugs that anaesthesize a human being also knocks out a variety of functions that are normally autonomous. Depending on the drug in question this can include breathing. There's a reason there's a whole branch of medicine specialized in administering narcosis.
Leave sedating people to the professionals Anon. Can you tell us why you need this information or which hypothetical situation it would apply to? I'm guessing it's not a case of insomniac nephews.

just saying, anesthesiology is one of the medical specialties that pays the most. nobody would pay them that much money if knocking somebody out was easy.

yup. if you hit them on the head and they got KO'd and they're not at least conscious if dazed in about 10 seconds, you probably permanently brain damaged them.
