Mine clearing if I'm not mistaken. The back is further from the crew and increases survivability. they drive backwards through the suspected mine field. Notice how the wheels are perfectly inline with the tracks?

they aren't driving backwards, its a t72 with the turret removed.

Nope, this is a specialized mine clearing vehicle built on the T64A, where the gun has been removed.

It´s a T-64A with gun removed and mantle covered with Kontakt-1 ERA, in front of it is installed KMT-7(?) mine rollers.

When the rolls hit mines they jump up a lot and would break the gun.

There's reports of North Korean command T-62's having no gun as well, but this is old news, and of course completely unreliable. Would make sense Norks as far as the 90's not having mass-produced integrated-circuit radios, and having to use huge vacuum-tube sets.

Why there is no fake canon on this vehicle?

I think it's actually a jab at how stupid Russian AT doctrine is.

In armored warfare, the first things to be destroyed after fuel trucks are engineering vehicles. In a conflict with an even semi-competent military, putting on a dummy turret (even if just an inflatable/plastic one) would help camouflage it and make it less conspicuous of a target.

The Ukies know the Russians aren't well equipped enough to differentiate them from a distance, and too stupid to know to go after them first even if they could.

I like the Netflix Castlevania explanation: Vampires have such specialized predatorial eyesight, that it works completely different from normal humans. Because of that, they have some difficulty with perfect geometrical shapes, especially directly up close. As a result, if you suddenly flash a geometric shape right up in their face, their brains freak the frick out for a few seconds before slowly coming back to their senses.

Blindsight is the epitome of pseudo-deep sci-fi. Most people would be made actually dumber and their intellectual development would be stunted if they read it before they already have at last a rudimentary understanding of the topics it covers.
But then anyone with such understanding would find no enjoyment in it.

Some people do not liked that book because they're triggered by the core concept of conciousness being just an evolutionay oddity and alien intelligence without it being more than possible, even commonplace.

It's the kind of deliciously realistic cosmic horror that makes religious believers very nervous about their mental house of cards.

It goes all-in on concepts that fascinate pseuds, like the p-zombie and does so without showing any ability to actually understand the problem at even the college level - both on the philosophical and pragmatic psychological level.
The work's understanding of biology and intelligence are similarly lacking.
None of this would be a big deal if its fans did not insist on treating it as thought-provoking "hard" science fiction when it's basically on the same level as original series Star Trek.

I read Blindsight and Echopraxia, both great reads that made me think about the world differently. There's some pretty memey material in there like the vamps and pseudo-philosophy (and literal memeolgy is mentioned if I recall) but I don't feel it detracted from the story. Most philosophy is so far up it's own ass it may as well be a meme anyway.

As if the scientific fields involved weren't a mess of speculation and shaky theories, lol. The book doesn't pretend to be a scientific paper, and it's kind of ironic that the criticism against it beyond literary merit it's exactly what you do here: dismissive high minded babble without real substance.

I think the author was just trying to frame some ideas in a more accessible way, which worked for me at least. As a "hard sci-fi" it's realistic in the sense that the motivations, actions/consequences are all make sense in the setting and bullshit doesn't happen for no reason.

No different than Ridley Scott's Prometheus or Covenant, only difference is Scott's media is shown in the dark so nobody can see you tip your fedora meaning it doesn't get defended on a Tibetan basketweaving site.

One of the biggest plotholes is that aliens would consider humans sending radio waves everywhere to be some sort of incredibly harmful and hostile attack on its attention. I thought these aliens were meant to be intelligent beings? Apparently not. The sheer amount of blind spots in cognition to come to that conclusion alone would be huge. It's not really worth discussing or properly explaining with someone who hasn't read the story though.

Those are Russian tank models, if you dont want to do war crimes and get friendly fired you need a clear signal what side you're on. White was the color of loyalists in the earlier rebellion in the east.

Its going forward, with its gun back, wheels hit mines and blow up instead of your actual tracks. Tanks doing long distance road driving often turn their gun back, but the others have guns forward so i'm guessing they dont want a landmine scuffing up precision tools.

But if they're so worried about landmines, what's Boris doing chilling out the hatch? Godspeed Crazy Boris.

On the schism of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine from the Russian Orthodox Church.

On 12 October 2018, the press service of the president of Russia made it known that the issue of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) in Ukraine was the subject of deliberations at the situational meeting Russia's president had with the permanent members of the Security Council of Russia. The president's spokesman Dmitry Peskov commented that the Kremlin supported the ROC's position and was ready to defend "the Orthodox faithful in Ukraine".

On 17 December 2018, it was reported that the Federal Security Service of Russia, along with members of the Moscow Patriarchate, allegedly had created mobile groups to prevent communities in Ukraine from switching from the UOC-MP to the OCU. Those groups are present in each diocese of the UOC-MP and are composed of a lawyer and several men.

On 20 December, Russia's president Vladimir Putin condemned the creation of the OCU. In an interview for Serbia's two major dailies published on 16 January 2019 on the official website of the president of Russia, Putin said the creation of the OCU and its official establishment via the Tomos was an attempt "to legalize the schismatic communities that exist[ed] in Ukraine under the jurisdiction of Istanbul, which is a gross violation of Orthodox canons".

On 6 November 2019, following the talks with his Greek counterpart Nikos Dendias, shortly after the Moscow Patriarchate severed communion with the Church of Greece in retaliation to the latter's recognition of the OCU, Russia's foreign minister Sergei Lavrov told a press conference that he believed that the OCU's recognition was predicated on the efforts of the U.S. Government and personally secretary of state Mike Pompeo.

The outward appearance looks better, more uniform and professional than what Russia is using now.

Bear in mind these are all pretty much spanking new in 1968, while ALL of Russian tanks currently being operated were made 40-60 years ago, and only had various modernization packages slapped on (packages that started out really ambitious but often just resulted in MOAR ERA BRICCS!!1 and some dumb, Black person rigged optics/sensor upgrades that were hard to use and sucked compared to their western counterparts).

For answers take a look at the Soviet/Russian defense budget.

How did soviet military spendings were even counted as? It is an economy of slave labor and artificial demand/supply cycle, no way they just counted the market cost of whatever stuff and called it a day, right?

You can still calculate GDP, right?

What I mean is that soviets could just pay cents to the soldiers, engineers, workers etc. get resources for effectievly free by demand, or just blatantly frick over domestic goods for the sake of military production on a whim.
The shit soviets done would've cost such a copious amounts of funds in proper market economy that it's hard to even grasp on.

The T-80U was the top dog of Soviet tank design, and it was considered prohibitively expensive because in the late 80's it cost as much as an M60A3.

Keep in mind, they currently have one tank factory that has to do everything from un-mothballing, to upgrades and overhauls, to repairs, and iirc the production centers responsible for the T-64 and T-80s were in Ukraine.

Ukraine produced T-80UD, T-80U was produced in Russia. Easy to confuse

Still the point still stands, they only have Uralvagonzavod to do anything relating to tanks, along with basically any other heavy equipment they're responsible for producing.

                Anonymous

true, not only that they are no longer producing any T-80s since 2001, so likely everything related to T-80 production(and likely un-mothballing) was stolen

I'm not sure, I'm not an economist, but I do know that till the late 80's Soviet ruble (being basically a communist toy money) was not exchangeable on the currency market, maybe that's why that graph starts at 1988.

The Soviets/Russians blew it for over a century now.

They sacrificed wealth to feed the military, while the USA built the wealth to feed the military.

they are driving forward but have rotated the turret to the rear
the wheels in front are for triggering anti tank mines
they rotate the turret to prevent any damage to the barrel and optics from the mines going off

Plus signs are crosses, Nazi iconography actually, used by the Wermacht in this same area.

We have videos of the offensive now. Ukrainians rushing trenches in a frenzy and butchering Russian troops, shooting them from the side in cowardly blood lust before they have time to respond. After they say, "hail Odin! Hail Thor!" These are Nazis through and through.

Before the Tartar Yolk, when Russia was enslaved by the East, for many centuries it was raised, raped, and enslaved by the Norsemen. It was a Yolk as long as more brutal, only forgotten now. Novgorod was ruled by the Norsemen, then Kievan Rus. They made their way to the Black Sea and even Constantinople paid them tribute. The West did worse, France fell to them, as did England, then southern Italy. Eventually North Africa and Palestine fell to them, but the Turk at least drove them out some day. Now we face this same old evil, same as 1812, 1914, or 1940. We will win again. Russia has risen from its knees and will beat back the savages.

mine rollers, with the turret rotated backwards to prevent damage to optics or gun if/when the mines go off.

    >Are the plus signs unit markings?
the Ukrainians are using it to differentiate their shit from the Russians' shit, since increasingly everyone is using the same stuff.
No idea if there is any significance to the cross but if I were a Ukrainian I'd be shooting the equivalent of "Gott Mit Uns" right about now.

Those crosses are friendly unit markings, similar to Russian Z's and the newest triangle w/ circle. Those wheels are mine rollers to make the AT-mine coom while you brrr over it.
