What is a ballistically good ammo for an 18 5.56 gun?

What is a ballistically good ammo for an 18” 5.56 gun? It’s a 1:8 twist so don’t worry about bullet weight too much, just effectiveness

it doesn't matter, nothing you ever shoot with it will know the difference
if you got 1:7 you could've went with tracers which are fun

Not him but I have an 18” barrel with a 1:7. Best anmo for me would be 62gr green tip right? Or is 55gr still superior

Green tip might be the worst round ballistically

          green tip is terrible
rounds with the soft plastic points reliably expand well

Green tip has the longest confirmed 1 shot 5.56 kill, of 700m in falluja 2004, you fricking plebs.

It is still shit ammo, by all metrics. That is just an amazing headshot.

This unless you're shooting from a bench for small groups with good form.

If I can get a better bullet, why not?

Go for it. You're more likely to find an accurate match load 65+ grains but you won't know unless you try a few different brands. Shoot at least 2 foulers then let the barrel cool a bit before shooting your 5 shot group THEN move to the next box to test. Fouler shots help when switching between loads.

M855 / ss109 isn't bad because of the weight but the construction. It's multiple metals fitted together which makes it harder for machines to balance and accuracy suffers for it.

          What study are you quoting?
          confirmed kill..
Whoah, if there's enough rounds fired at enough people far enough away then eventually something is going to hit.

be more accurate, do you want best exterior or terminal ballistics and against what

vs. shitskins probably something like this. Instant expansion but thick copper base gives full penetration of a body and loaded hot itll go through level III plates for sure. https://www.nosler.com/products/ammunition/product-line/ballistic-tipr-hunting.html

    adi 60 grain

55gr. There may not be a standard for 55gr loadings and they may not be as bougie as 77gr but even the shittiest .223 out of an 18-20” will turn lung tissue into soup and you don’t need to rely on heavy grain tumbling with that barrel length

    do some 75gr eld-m

Idk OP but consider this I chrono'd my 20" and 16" from the same mfg with the same lot of 77gr and the 20" did 2700 fps, which was only 60 fps more than the 16", anyway I'd check out some loads with the Hornady 75gr BTHP, it's got a higher BC than 77gr and would probably be quite sick out of an 18"

dont go down this ballistic rabbit hole, you will research for hours on difference in performance etc etc, and you will come to the conclusion that you dont need anything more than 55gr fmj for everything except hunting

I've found the 62g Federal LE to group well with 1-8 twist and they're soft points if you care about terminal effects. If you want something affordable, just load up on PSA 77g and whatever M193 is on sale. Avoid M855.

OP here, what’s the difference velocity wise between a 20 and 18 inch barrel?

      Anonymous

Like 40-50 fps with M193 - the difference becomes smaller with heavier loads.

Is that enough to make any practical difference?

I'm moronic: that is with M855 - it's like 100 fps with M193 which is a nice bump since that weight loses so much ass at range. Practically I don't know if you will notice with lesser grain weights and even the lighter stuff you won't notice the longer barrel until past 400 yards.

From what I understand the jump from 16 to 18 is a lot larger than 18 to 20
