I ne'er got that. Like, i kinda do, you tell me what it is and it makes sense, but ive never needed it or could see me getting to that point. Maybe if I was in a really shiity jungle scenario and maintenance became kinda impossible.
Like, was it supposed to be for when the buffer spring tube fails? The bolt supposed to fugg up in the bolt carrier hand make you have to slap some man on it?
Ive had all kinds of malfunctions failure to eject, dbl feeds, rounds somehow jamming themselves on top on the charging handle. All kinds of shit. Never needed to assit the bolts forwardness.

pretty much what hitler said, its just a fun button to mash while yyour ruckin and watching your sector.

That's because it's not for you. It exists on military ar type rifles in case of a hypothetical peer on peer war like ww2 or parts of Korea where soldiers might have to stay deployed in adverse conditions with little to no sustainment, where near constant use and lack of supplies would possibly make cycling the bolt a chore into itself. It exists on (some) civilian guns because of habit or army-man aesthetic.

Its a forward assist button. If you look at the side of the bolt carrier theres little notches in it, that button pushed a lil rod that hooks on those notches, pushing the bolt carrier forward to get the bolt to lock into place. Basically, if your action gets all junked up you can use that to manually get the bot forward. By then, youre basically on bolt action status, so

That's the sniper button. Hold it down when you shoot to become a real sniper and turn your gun into a bolt action, like the Lee Enfield!

isnt actually that far off the mark.

In Half-Life you could right click and fire two shots at once from your SPAS 12 like it's a double barrelled shotty.

          Anonymous

And yet they had unique animations for reloading on an empty mag and a mag with rounds in it still, including the slid locking back.
They should have made the SPAS work like the glock, left click for a more precise pellet group, right for auto and more spread.

A forward assist’s purpose is simple: It enables the operator of a semi-automatic rifle to quickly close the bolt in the event that a cartridge fails to seat correctly in the chamber. In such a situation the mis-seated round would hold the bolt open and render the firearm inoperable until the shooter fixed the problem. The forward assist makes fixing said problem as easy as pushing a pawl. This is a great advantage to have at your disposal during battle.
Pressing down on the forward assist’s pawl activates its plunger. This in turn engages with the bolt to move it forward. This action accordingly pushes the hanged up round into the chamber. Its spring returns the forward assist’s pawl back to its original position after it has been pressed.
In essence, the forward assist does nothing more than assist in the process of moving the mis-chambered cartridge forward.
The forward assist did not come into existence with the introduction of the AR-15. The M1 Garand, M1 Carbine, and M14 all have external forward assists which force them into battery as well. Today, forward assists are standard on all AR-15 pattern rifles, including those shooting .223 ammo, .308 ammo, and more. This is partly because the forward assist does add greater functionality to the rifle. It’s also because civilians want rifles which look just like what the pros would implement in the field.
If your AR-15’s failure to chamber the next round would compromise your ability to defend your life, then by all means – press that pawl.
At the end of the day, a forward assist doesn’t actually detract from an AR-15’s performance in any significant way. It can be helpful to hunters, who may close the bolt slowly to avoid making noise which could spook game. If they failed to close the bolt all the way, the forward assist will provide that final little push necessary to bring the rifle into battery.

The AR platform is gas operated. So you've got to give that button a couple pumps before you fire to build up gas pressure so the rifle will operate.

It's a neat and safe fidget device. I used to fidget with the safety by flipping it through it's positions while bored on patrol. Another guy saw me do it and I guess he started to do it too, but he ended up ND'ing into the floor of the truck. He tried to blame me, but I lied and said I only fidget with the plunger. Decided to just switch to the plunger to keep my cover even though it's not as pleasantly clicky as the safety. Pic unrelated.
