I've always wondered if they picked a good site for a castle.

it's more of a heavily fortified manor than a full on castle.
So it's prime function is to be the base and residence of the local lord so it isn't in the most defensible spot.
but mainly because you need a cheep bit of land with stone close to it and not a pain in the ass to build on like some cliff face or some other bullocks.

Heavily fortified base and residence of a local bigwig sounds like the definition of a castle

A castle usually wasn't the residence of the lord
but it's a academic levels of vague difference

It's full of iron and sandstone and even lime nearby. Good local materials available

it is situated to be close to materials they need, dunno about strategic value

Absolutely awesome, both in terms of the finished product and as experimental archeology.
That said, I would be happy if they used modern machinery (but original materials). More castles should be built or restored in this way.

Seems to be in the flat land. Where possible, castles would be built on hills, but it's possible there was none in the immediate area. And it complicates everything of course, for little gain.

        >More castles should be built or restored in this way

a lot of the people who've worked on Guedelon have gone on to use the skills for restoration of castles, and most notably, the reconstruction work after the Notre Dame fire.

they also do maintenance on other castles

I think this is the main benefit of the project; keeping an institutional level of masonry knowledge alive where it otherwise would require costly guesswork to emulate.

it was one of the original goals of the project.

A castle wouldn't be built on that site, but choosing this site reduced a lot of logistic constraints that would have drawn out the project even longer.

I visited it as a kid. Fun to watch. It's slow as frick but I would like to see how things are going on today.

Cool project. Experimental archaeology is neat.

I will kneel if they build a siege weapon like a catapult or trebuchet to test the effect on the masonry. Then get the masons back in to see what they can learn about repairing battle damage compared to building from scratch.
