it's more of a heavily fortified manor than a full on castle.
So it's prime function is to be the base and residence of the local lord so it isn't in the most defensible spot.
but mainly because you need a cheep bit of land with stone close to it and not a pain in the ass to build on like some cliff face or some other bullocks.
Absolutely awesome, both in terms of the finished product and as experimental archeology.
That said, I would be happy if they used modern machinery (but original materials). More castles should be built or restored in this way.
Seems to be in the flat land. Where possible, castles would be built on hills, but it's possible there was none in the immediate area. And it complicates everything of course, for little gain.
>More castles should be built or restored in this way
a lot of the people who've worked on Guedelon have gone on to use the skills for restoration of castles, and most notably, the reconstruction work after the Notre Dame fire.
I think this is the main benefit of the project; keeping an institutional level of masonry knowledge alive where it otherwise would require costly guesswork to emulate.
A castle wouldn't be built on that site, but choosing this site reduced a lot of logistic constraints that would have drawn out the project even longer.
I visited it as a kid. Fun to watch. It's slow as frick but I would like to see how things are going on today.
To keep it /k/ related, my mother bought me a knife handcrafted by the smith
Indeed. You stabbed your Aryan brothers in the back and now your country has been taken over by the israelites and is being flooded with Black folk and hispanics who will push out the white man.
Neat. I would like to see more projects like this. >homies try to build an exact replica of the pyramids in Arizona using historically accurate technologies and techniques
>all the LARPERs spend decades building it >finish it and get dead drunk to celebrate its completion >unbeknownst to them another group LARPing as a siege-force move up to the eaves of the wood around the castle that night >dawn next morning fire siege weapons at the walls and gate, then scale with ladders >building LARPERs wonder WTF is going on as attack LARPERs actually kill them for real >attack LARPERs finish the day's LARPING, change out of their medieval clothes and get in the car to drive home
I will kneel if they build a siege weapon like a catapult or trebuchet to test the effect on the masonry. Then get the masons back in to see what they can learn about repairing battle damage compared to building from scratch.
Yeah
French would rather build a gay ass fake castle then send leclercs
I hate them so much
Sending AMX
Ah yes, Guedelon, that well-known French government military programme.
Rent free
Cope and seethe, connard
I've always wondered if they picked a good site for a castle.

Heavily fortified base and residence of a local bigwig sounds like the definition of a castle
A castle usually wasn't the residence of the lord
but it's a academic levels of vague difference
It's full of iron and sandstone and even lime nearby. Good local materials available
it is situated to be close to materials they need, dunno about strategic value

they also do maintenance on other castles

Tom Scott did a video on it a few months ago.
they finished one of the towers, nice
it's neet

Visited 15 years ago, it has come a long way. Good to see the progress
the 2 towers will be massive but they should be mostly finished in a few years.
Kys morons
I remember a friend telling me about it in 2004.

>not fighting the Fr*nch government with trebuchets and ballistas
Cool project. Experimental archaeology is neat.

I visited as a kid 20 years ago, work was just beginning. Very kino, especially the human cranes.
