Bakhmut is fricking brilliant for Ukraine. Not only do they get to bleed Russia with hundreds of losses per day at very little danger to themselves, the terrain makes it easy for them to feign retreat while drawing Russian forces into a trap with all the fresh western supports they getting. I think the next 10-20 days will see a major collapse of Russians in the area.

Wagner were literally taking villages on the outskirts of Bakhmut when they were supposedly out of ammo lol.
Not saying it was a bluff, but there's a much bigger chance that some jealous incompetent politician or general was blocking the supply because Wagner gets more praise than the Russian army than some other thing.

Look at any western or Ukrainian source and you'll see that Russia is blasting around 35-40k shells per day on average and 60k in their peaks. Meanwhile Ukraine is firing 5k shells per day on average with peaks at 7k.

            https://i.imgur.com/G8EKu7g.jpg

it's coping. ukraine lost ~25k of their best troops in bakhmut.

            Not true.
Bakhmut is mainly defended by conscripts and reserves.
Their plan is to buy time for the 70k soldiers that are currently being trained in NATO countries to prepare as good as they can for the offensive in spring or early summer.

The war is pretty much in the end game and will culminate in April-June. This is basically Ukraine's last chance to take Crimea or whatever their plan is. If they fail then the west has two options, to either escalate or to negotiate a peace deal because Ukrainians will be exhausting their best men.

Also what's the point of fighting if they fail and Donbass falls? Then they will have to destroy their own cities. For now they are destroying towns and villages of separatists that they don't view as their own people so the don't care about the destruction.
Will they continue to hide in apartment buildings and place tanks in front of civilian houses in Dnipro? I doubt it.

They've expended a lot of troops, equipment and ammunition on bakhmut. If they haven't been inflicting equivalent losses - which is quite possible since fortified urban areas significantly reduce the effectiveness of artillery - then they're in a lot of trouble.

its not like we didn't see something similar in previous offensives. Russia lost scads of men in frontal assaults against cities in the Donbass last summer and ended up getting routed out of large swathes of Kharkhiv shortly thereafter and had to shore up defenses by pulling the annexation gimmick and throwing mobilized conscripts into the now 'Russian' territories.

Even if they get a truce along current borders tomorrow Russia has lost far more than it has gained throughout this war. You have to be a paid shill or delusional contrarian to not see this.

The aftermath of a ceasefire and peace-deal is going to be devastating to the Russian military no matter what. All those mobiks are going to try leaving as soon as there's no real excuse to keep them, leaving behind shattered units that can't even defend their own country, let alone police another. I wouldn't be surprised if the brass 'extend' their service through illegal bullshit, on top of introducing North Korean-style conscription as a quick fix.

        Anonymous

russians are ok with the war as long as they're not the ones having to do the fighting, mass mobilization will result in chaos.
thats even before addressing other issues down the line like how do they plan to train and equip these millions of conscripts.
however neither party wants a truce or even a peace deal right now cause they know their demands would never be met.
ukraine would demand all their territories back and nothing less, russia would demand total capitulation of ukraine and other stuff like staying out of NATO and the EU.

            >NATO army

What NATO army? The only NATO countries that have a real army are the US and Turkey. And Turkey is the only NATO country that has a strong land army. The US land army is a fricking joke. The US is only strong in the air and on sea.

If Russia didn't attack Ukraine, the ukranian army could fricking roll all over the armies of France, Germany and Britain. Heck, the pols would roll over what remains of the 'famous german army' now.

With it's late soviet air defences, Ukraine would tear the british, french and german air force to shreds, and even America would struggle badly to suppress Ukraine's air defenses.

Now think about how would a NATO army fair against the mass of russian artillery?

And forget about taking it out from the air, as the russian air defense would make it so costly for the US airforce that they wouldn't even try it. They would probably try mass cruise missile attack, but the russian air defense is very capable of handling that. And the US wouldn't really get a second salvo off as the russian long range missile artillery would answer and destroy many of the cruise missile launch platforms. Airfields and ships.

No, on the ground any NATO army would suffer horrendous losses before they even reached the russian lines.

What would the backlash at home be in such a case?

              >With it's late soviet air defences, Ukraine would tear the british, french and german air force to shreds, and even America would struggle badly to suppress Ukraine's air defenses.
Germany lacks an effective airforce due to maintenance issues, I have no doubt that the UK and France could suppress Ukraine's IADS.
              >Now think about how would a NATO army fair against the mass of russian artillery?
Better than a Russian army would fair against the mass of NATO accurate and also guided munitions. Remember, the best that Russia has is laser guided, whereas every NATO nation fields at least one kind of shell that selects its own target and attacks it with thermo-optical guidance.
              >And forget about taking it out from the air, as the russian air defense would make it so costly for the US airforce that they wouldn't even try it. I'm being trolled. We know S-400 can't deal with Tomahawk, never mind the stealthier options, because Russian operated S-400s failed to intercept any of the Tomahawks aimed at Shayrat. Further, Russia's ability to target over-the horizon missile artillery systems has been shown to be non-existent in Ukraine, even when the launch systems are only 70km from the targets.

Well it's a strange war in that even though Russia invaded and shares a land border with the Ukraine, Ukraine is not allowed to invade back, else it will lose support from all its backers. In principle Russia doesn't even have to man that border, it can throw all it has at the Donbas and Ukraine won't do anything beyond light shelling and commando raids.

For all the talk of Russia fighting holding back and "taking the gloves off", the Ukrainians are fairly limited in their ability to strike anywhere that isn't the Donbass meatgrinder. As a result, Russia can just leave the volunteers from Moscow in these areas to relax and do propaganda shoots.

There was actually a study done on this by a western uni, can’t recall which one off hand. Showed that pro Ukr bot presence far exceeded Russian bot presence, not that we needed any more evidence given the state of this board.

                Anonymous

I know what study that was and it's shit, it was done by one female student not a university.
For a start, it was twitter, most Russian infowar targets far more vulnerable websites.
The methodology was also highly criticised, it assumed people copying other peoples posts or just retweeting were bots, this alone effectively nullified the shill narrative.

Thirdly even if it was true (It isn't), twitter is a western wesbite, it bans Russian bot farms get killed far more heavily because they get reported for being filthy dirty foreigner shills.

And lastly, not all western bot farms are governmental, you get corperate ones that just follow the average political line and shill their products.

So, as usual. You got nothing but "I totally read this study on bots". Next time you read a study, read its criticisms, that's literally how it's meant to work and grow.

Not politician related but a few weeks ago, some guy taped a phone in a live studio for a football (soccer) match in UK and rang it, the ring town was a woman having very load orgasmic sex. No. They’ve finally re-entered the city after being pushed out six months ago and it looks like the Ukrainians are holding the city proper with a relatively minor force of 2-6000, fighting has shifted mostly to the flanks, where Russia is Kursking themselves in pursuit of kottle. They probably could take the city if they focused their attack there (Ukraine would just retreat) but my suspicion is that they want the optics of an encirclement no matter how few they catch.

Ever heard or the word "Phyrric Victory"?

Then you better read up on Phyrrus of Eprius:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyrrhus_of_Epirus

    >Pyrrhus lends his name to the term "Pyrrhic victory" which stems from statement he is alleged to have made following the Battle of Asculum. In response to congratulations for winning a costly victory over the Romans, he is reported to have said: "If we are victorious in one more battle with the Romans, we shall be utterly ruined". The term Pyrrhic Victory has therefore come to signify a victory that was won at such cost that it loses all worth.

A victory so costly it turns into a strategic defeat. Like the other side sacrificing pawns in chess. Yes they lose something but only set up the conditions for their victory.

All of Ukraine's best troops died last summer in Sevierodonetsk. Since then it's just been conscripted children, Polish mercenaries and resurrected Nazis. The children are the ones who retook the Kharkiv region in September and the Nazis are holding Vuhledar because they cannot be killed by any weapon forged by man. Nobody knows where the Poles are now.

Pyrrhic Victory. Shit is older then Jesus vatBlack person, but then again expecting you to know any history other than the shitty WW2 fanfiction you get taught in Russia is too much.
