The improvement in situational awareness and greater accuracy of fires on target means a battle rifle can have substantial benefits over an assault rifle. Squad-level drones, IVAS, smart-sights with thermal function, etc. all mean the singular warfighter has a greater capability of detecting and destroying an enemy than every before.

The only thing that matters is the pic rail, fire control system and suppressor. Swap any rifle and you get most of the result you would get with a battle rifle. As much as we try to turn small arms into offensive weapons of war, they are used overwhelmingly as a reactive defensive weapon.

The 6.8 and .227 are still intermediate cartridges, while a battle rifle chambers a fully powered round. It is closer to the 7.62x39 as in the AK platform, which inspired the change.

        Anonymous

Nope. Both are considered full power cartridges.

6.8 has very similar muzzle energy to .270 win and military loadings of .30-06. it is a full power rifle cartridge, just a very stupid one.

Using unguided fire at long ranges on a modern battlefield is dumb. Use unguided fire at point-blank ranges where rapid reaction and volume of fire are important. For longer ranges, use squad-level or manpack guided HE-frag. For long-range engagements against large or entrenched forces, call in smart shells; PGK and PGMM can be delivered within a minute or two with modern comms.

I'm convinced that anyone who thinks a grunt lobbing rifle rounds at targets 600m and up just because they have an auto-BDC is realistic and practical has never shot a gun at ranges beyond 200m.

It's not just a BDC, it provides a common operational picture for all soldiers in the battlefield, this is the AWACS revolution for ground combat.

The Sig Spear was just adopted. It is a battle rifle that fires from a 20 round magazine.

The BAR was adopted in 1918, which is a battle rifle that fires from a 20 round magazine.

They share similarities. What the US military really needs to do is stop chasing it's tail and instead of trying to adopt one standard service rifle, adopt a Battle Rifle for range and power, an Assault Rifle for common use and a Carbine/Compact model for close ranges.

Instead they will adopt this, and the soldiers will complain that it is too heavy and cumbersome, and the next "revolution" in firearms design will be to shift back to an assault rifle.

      Anonymous

It would be generous to describe the BAR as a battle rifle instead of an automatic rifle. It was very accurate and allowed for effective automatic fire but it was damn heavy. You couldn't hope to give every man in a squad one because that squad would be very overloaded once you gave them enough ammunition to make that automatic fire useful to them. With a battle rifle, which is sort of a retroactive term, the weapon is still light enough where you could realistically issue it very commonly like a standard issue service rifle. Though that is rarely done these days because there are many advantages for having a rifle or carbine using intermediate caliber ammo as standard issue.

        >It would be generous to describe the BAR as a battle rifle instead of an automatic rifle.
The English language just doesn't have a proper term for what it is anymore, since "automatic rifle" is a general term. E.g. a fusil-mitrailleur in French would describe the weapon accurately.

      >adopt a Battle Rifle for range and power, an Assault Rifle for common use and a Carbine/Compact model for close ranges
This is what we did in WW2. Your full-power rifle was used for general fighting and SMGs were issued for CQB. We adopted assault rifles specifically to cover both use cases because issuing multiple weapons for individual use cases is moronic. The NGSW aimed to take the assault rifle concept and extend its range while minimally harming its strengths.

Body Armor started working against 5.56.

6.8x51 still needs a tungsten penetrator to to go through level iv plates...same shit that 7.62x51 requires AND 5.56

nvm the fact that China has, by far, the largest deposits of tungsten on the planet. Kind of a problem when you are developing a round that is meant to face their supposedly good body armor.

              >not .277
              Correct, .338 Lap has
              a) a higher velocity than .277
              b) a higher grain count than .277
              c) a higher BC than .277

In other words it is in every way more capable of penetrating armor at range than .277 could ever be. And in that video, you saw the **AP version** of it still failing to penetrate a budget Level IV plate from a barrel that's 8" longer than what the XM7 sports, at less than half the range the XM7 is expected to be engaging at. Do the math how .277 is going to do against armor from a 13" barrel at 600y, with the standard issue bullet.
