Vietnam was full of interesting mods, guys using personal non reg weapons.
And just doing what worked to get the job done.
Type of.thing that happens when a pro army is getting curb stomped by villagers

        >Indecision
        >Too risk averse
        >Possible cowardice
        >Lack of knowledge/skill in infantry TTP's further fueling lack of decision making through incompetence through self doubt and low self confidence
        >Not prioritizing the lives of his men
Ex: Caesar after a somewhat failed campaign in Britain; after crossing the channel had a small detachment of only a few hundred men get separated and surrounded by Gaullic forces, rather than abandoning a relatively small and insignificant force compared to his tens of thousands of other men, he instead decided to risk all of his precious cavalry to break the encirclement to save the couple hundred men. Historians say Caesars men followed him across the Rubicon for unpaid debts, in reality, they followed because he cared that much, he was a true leader, Cowboy was not.

The Army experimented with making an American RPK by giving an M16 a dummy thicc barrel and a bipod. Also just soldiers using detachable bipods here and there.

        >What the frick?
It was the Army's cope for not having a dedicated squad automatic weapon: just give a couple guys bi-pods for their M16.

Every gun at the time had a bipod option, it made more sense with the AR-10 but the standard lightweight bipod was sold as an option to the M-16 and fielded relatively extensively, most grunts just kept it in their pockets and never used it ever.

Apparently it was a thing well into the 80s, i saw a Colt ad selling A2s with rail tops and the original bipod once.

i remember first learning about this. i thought it was cool but why did they never make m16 drum mags? even with just a capacity of 60 it would've made a difference

They did, and they were shit. Carrying around a bunch of smaller mags was better than carrying around a few big ass bulky mags.

that's a shame. if it worked out maybe we could still see something similar in use today

Marine M27 automatic riflemen commonly carry a magpul d60 in the rifle with all other carried mags being 30 rounders.

What? Who does? I carried that shit with nary a fricking gaypul mag in sight.

the army actually planned on just slapping a bipod on 2 m16s a squad and calling it a day as far a squad lmgs go. pretty soon they figured out that was fricking moronic. we're seeing the same shit now with the m27 iar in the mc.

some of that shit is just as cyclical as fashion with no more rhyme or reason behind it. same shit as 7.62>5.56>6.8.

As posters said above didn't big dick it and rush in to help wounded, especially with the superior training and equipment(spam smoke) that the US were afforded fighting literal rice farmers who spent the last 3 out of 4 months of their military career marching from NV to SV.

They thought the town was filled with infantry moron, he and his platoon didn't know it was a single sniper. The wounded were obviously being used as bait and the best thing to do would be to wait for the armor and hold instead of pushing across an open field into a chokepoint with no idea where targets are. He ended up losing his life from this as well as more of his squad.

This might be a dumb question but did the flak jacket help at all in this situation or did it just make things worse? Obviously it didn't stop the bullet, but would his injuries have been less or worse if he wasn't wearing it?

No, it could barely even stop pistol rounds. It was a fine flak vest for the time though. It would of course be harder to treat the woundbut he was fricked anyways.

stupid question, but did the NVA even have significant artillery? i would think any battery would get nearly immediately bombed due to american air superiority.

The NVA had, the VC didn't. However, the NVA couldn't really lug artillery battalions down the HCM-trail, so in practical terms they most often didn't have it availible.
