Ability to operate operationally for long periods without sleep. Like 3+ days range. Even an extra 12 hours would see a huge proficiency increase, but 72+hrs would be a game changer.

Also, ask any soldier if they get enough sleep, the answer is literally always no, and a bunch have sleep issues from all the crazy scheduling. My first two years I worked a 1600-0000, then 0900-1700, then 0100-0900, then 0800-1600. And of course the twice a month pleasure of staying up 24hrs straight for cq/staff duty. Aside from alcohol, I dont think there is one thing hindering the military more than shitty sleep.

        But I like having teeth.

          Anonymous

Meth has no effect on your teeth unless smoked. Decreases saliva production for sure but this can be mitigated with proper electrolytes and chewing gum, avoiding acidic foods.

The reason for meth mouth is because long term use causes compulsive behaviours that outcompete personal hygeine. Brushing your teeth is time that could be spent cleaning your neighbor's lawnmower and such.

Meth is a highly effective and ultra-clean drug. Much easier on the body and mind than any other stimulant. Minimum effective dose is around 2-5mg. A first timer's recreational dose is usually going to be 30-100mg. Hardcore IV users will blow 200mg at a time and sometimes use in excess of a gram a day.

There's really no reason that it shouldn't be used other than the fact that everyone would want meth after leaving the army. As far as potential usefulness in the field, there's no upper limit.

More trouble than it's worth. Imagine trading the widely available oxygen and food that we can consume for power for electrical power, which is rare and hard to get? It's turning a person into a vehicle which can be disabled or malfunction, which is not worth it. Imagine a power outage and suddenly your legs don't work? Human systems are actually more reliable.

Something that might work is a light exo-skeleton suit to reduce load bearing.

your wall socket can do 100 watts for several hours with tiring or complaining
and you think carrying hundreds of tons of perishables that need to be individually wrapped per person is easy? laying down capable or transporting flatbed trucks of energy-dense fuel cells would be easier than MREs

NAYRT but a robot can get more consistent work out of a genset than a human can out of an equivalent volume and mass of food, and fuel is much more portable than food

we use electricity instead of brute force for these reasons, otherwise our power grids would not be functioning off coal, gas, hydro or uranium, but huge masses of human hamsterwheels.

its easier to lay cable than it is to drive supply trucks back and forth

you will literally burn more gasoline in trucks full of MREs feeding everyone than its equivalent in kilojoules in gasoline burned to produce electricity

They have done extensive testing on these systems and they actually suck. Yes they reduce the load and wear on certain parts of the body but during their tests they found the strain is always just transferred to another part of the body like the back or the hips. Long term you'd see just as much chronic injuries as without the rig so they abandoned the project entirely. Now a fully enclosed suit? That has yet to be developed practically but that would likely be an answer.

Cyberpsychosis appears nowhere but Pondsmith's IPs. Humanity has long accepted that we are more than the meat shells that house our consciousness. Improving said shell will not make me or anyone else that does so less human.

cyberpyschosis was originally meant to be "as you get more and more chrome, the corpos own more and more of you, and at maximum chrome you become a corporate wageslave as they own your entire being" as a counter-measure against munchkinery

but it was changed near the end of development to something easier for players to understand, which is "cybernetics eat your soul"
this was a terrible choice because becoming a murderous psychopath is not any kind of deterrent to the players who are going to be chroming up their character
also mild ableist implications like having pacemakers or needing to replace an arm lost in accident making you less human

The vidya game actually has that as one of the theories for what actually causes it. It's why you don't see Arasaka or Militech hiigher ups losing their shit despite having probably just as much if not more chrome than Johnny Cyberdick that you just walked by on the street. All their implants come from the same place, so they're all made to work together.

another thing not present in the vidya are biotechnologic implants

they are weaker for the same cost, reinforcing your skeleton with adamantium is more expensive, more invasive, and ultimately less powerful than just replacing your limbs with robotic ones
but you wont have to worry about injecting yourself with immunosuppressants 24/7 to delay the inevitable rejection of artificial body parts and you can live knowing that you arent one software update away from being obsolete

                Anonymous

Yeah, Shadowrun has that too, they just call it different, and it's a similar kind of deal, more expensive but lower essence(how the game limits cyber characters)cost. The drawback being there are things cyberware can do that it can't(no such thing as a joint that can free spin 360 degrees, or a biological equivalent of radar).

Both the game and Edgerunners also make clear that environmental factors are super important. All the psychos in the game have something that triggered their current state and you could argue most of them are more psychosis of someone that happens to be a killing machine than a true 'cyber-psychosis'. Edgerunners goes a little more with the tabletop idea of it being related to cybernetics, but it's still in a situation of extreme duress and Lucy is able to power-of-love David back to his senses for at least a moment. Plus I don't think David's hurting anyone he doesn't have reason to in the show.

From what little is shown how the relic operates I always got the impression the connections of the augs that are talking with the nervous system are also damaging it. The more you have, the more source of damages you incur. Which induces psychosis, blackouts, paralysis, all the symptoms shown with the various cases. Also as nervous systems are as different as fingerprints each case is unique, with Johnny going mental at his single silver hand while somebody like David could tank the shit to almost full conversion borg levels without going insane

That is why V can stuff himself full of cyberware like a thanks giving turkey, since the same relic that is overwriting his brain is also actively repairing all the damage done by the augs.

Which he gets with the contract with Arasaka. Big reason he is backing up Yorinobu and his sabotage seems to be that he promises him absolute war with Militech which you can see forming in game

Such HUDs could just as well be attached to helmets rather than going cyborg.
Internals should be only analog stuff and no I/O, as EW against bodies would be a brutally effective prospect. Perhaps reinforced joints, maybe if that works I'd say the best bet would be hardpoints to accept all sorts of attachments on the body, to be swappable for different tasks.

For the moment at least, leg based augs would absolutely go far. The average soldier already has to carry hundreds of pounds of shit on them on a regular basis, which even for the most fit and religiously athletic people will wear them out eventually just from sheer strain on the body. Hips and leg plus spine augs allow for all sorts of crazy stuff to be possible, from either ridiculous load weights to stacking moron armor on that doesn’t hinder movement at all, or at least not nearly as much as it would for someone without said augs, that would make small arms a mostly redundant threat and protect against frag and explosions that aren’t point blank or something. Outside of that neural enhancements are another obvious choice, such as data links with networks operating in the theater and HUD/vision shit, but that sounds like a special type of hell if you’re on the wrong side of the EW weenie.

    >cyborg
First priority should be genetic engineering. Borrowing genes from a salamander allows you to regenerate entire limbs or even eyes. It's already been tried in lab mice, so no reason it can't work for humans.
    >scanning enemies
Borrow genes from a pit viper. Everyone has built-in IR that doesn't need batteries.
    >bullet time
Adrenaline enhances perception, but some people benefit from this more than others. Isolate the genes that are shared by natural athletes and you'll probably find the key to bullet time.
    >super strength
Look up "Belgian Blue". Change the myostatin gene and you get 40% more muscle.

Cyborgs definitely will be first tho. Hell, Musk already has a cripple posting to twitter with his fricking mind. However, I do agree genetic engineering would be superior to cybernetics and will surpass it in the more distant future. Eventually I think will end up like, to barrow from another tabletop rpg, Tzimisce flesh-shapers.

        >Cyborgs definitely will be first
There's no reason they have to be. All the technology you need to enhance human genetics has already been tested on mammals, you just aren't allowed to move to human trials due to "ethics" concerns. (One day I'd like to see all bioethicists put on trial with a jury made up entirely of disabled war veterans who waited decades for treatments to be approved, but that's a whole other rant).
If just one nation would allow unrestricted genetic research they would quickly build a gigantic advantage over everyone else. You can't compete with a nation whose average citizen is smarter, stronger and healthier than your top performers. Every other government would either deregulate or die.

Guys guys!!! I have an idea for augmented cyborg super soldiers: What if we take children and or orphans, perform enhancement scifi surgery on them, give them super combat drugs, and give them power armor?

    What ya think, huh? Huh!?

And then when aliens attack us we can pretend we made them to fight the aliens instead of for putting boots on the necks of uppity colonials! I am all for this idea!

I like how ONI tried to pin it all on her, like they had absolutely no idea what she was doing, like they just gave her a blank check and zero oversight. Black person if that were true you're the shittiest intelligence agency in the history of intelligence agencies and your asses are going in front of the firing squad right after her for the grossest of negligence.

And it turns out, alien humanoid bird people with an alien snipe rifle that shoots exploding hippie crystals can one shot kill the surgically enhanced drugged child super soldiers in power armor for a fraction of the cost of said drugged up child super soldiers.

Catherine Halsey is/was a massive shotacon who schlicked lewds and doujins of Genshin twinks, isn't she? Why else did she insist we take shotas, give them drugs and super duper armor?

HUD with communication system. Doesn't even have to be cybernetic.
Things like IFF/blue force tracking and the ability to talk with someone 50m away as if he were right next to you and seamlessly navigating audio channels.

You know exactly where your allies are, reported enemy positions appear on your HUD, you get general information about enemy vehicles in the area and you can quickly coordinate support units with a lot of precision.
The one big downside would be the technical vulnerabilities. Enemies could sabotage the systems and then you are screwed but assuming the systems would be secure enough, this cybernetic would be absolutely overpowered while not being very invasive on the human body.
    Information and communication trumps everything.

I just want to talk about the Iron Hands now that I can. Has anyone read the Eye of Medusa? I just finished it. Kristos is a bad motherfricker and he only shows up three times. Why don't we see more Iron Hands or Space Marines in general with cracked out augments? The part where the Iron Hands say "Frick it" and walk through a mine field with one of them occasionally stepping on one and getting blow tf up was funny as shit. They just didn't care. Imagine that shit in real life.

inner ear transplants, firefights are loud and hearing specific things is hard in that chaos, the only other longer term damage is spinal pain from carrying all that shit. 40k got it right, it's a space marine implant the emperor, or at least lyman who the ear's named after made, and space marines dont usually have hearing issues unless their ears are mentioned destroyed beforehand.
