What cartridge would be best in a long action bolt gun with a short 20 barrel?

What cartridge would be best in a long action bolt gun with a short 20” barrel? Probably gonna rebarrel my hunting rifle it’s too long and chambered in a dead cartridge

308win, 300 win mag, 6.5 creedmoor, or 270win. Anything else is a meme.
What's your rifle? You should find a black smith to turn your old boutique barrel into a katana or some other cool shit since throwing away perfectly good steel would just be a waste.

OP clearly wants ammo he can actually buy in big box stores or mom an pop gunshops and not have to make special orders for some super unique round for what is probably not even that fancy or rare of a rifle and could just be your standard off the shelf Remington, Howa, or Tika rifle.

why not use a more realistic cartridge for 20" barrels?

Those are all effective out of a 20” barrel

all but the .308 is woefully inefficient.

6.5 is unbelievable effective and surprisingly popular

What are you planning on hunting? What ranges are you hunting at? Do you stalk or sit in a treestand/blind?

Mule deer. <400 yards and I stalk

6.5creed. Really efficient in a 20" barrel, light recoil so good for a light hunting rifle that you'll be lugging around. Use full copper bullets, you'll drop mules straight down. If you'd said >400yd I'd suggest something else, but <400yd 6.5creed reigns supreme for American game

Nice bag. It has a 30-06 size bolt face so I may just go with 270win

Looks like it might be a bit iffy with a short barrel for taking game.

Long action standard bolt face factory ammunition makes sense to go with 270. I'd only veer away from it if I was dedicated to handloads only and was willing to spend a bit more. I want to talk you into a 24" but it's not like the 20" won't serve you well. Just 24" you might get to see a little more of the 270s potential with a bit more barrel.

True but OP isn't reaching out beyond 400yd so 20" is totall sufficient

why waste the extra action length on a mid cartridge like that

Never, ever have to worry about running out of space for really long, heavy boolits.

Sadly no, 280 rem. I can still reload them but if I’m getting a shorter barrel anyway I’d like to get something more common

      6.5 Creed, only loses 100fps from a 26"
get a fast twist rate, use the action length to load some stupid long 150gr spun copper bullets

I love Norway and all but what's cool about 30-40? you could just make a light recoil 308 load.

I’d re-barrel it in 300 winmag for. 20 inch or for something short and quiet one of those 12 inch 8.6 blackout barrels.

.300 Winchester Magnum if you're reasonable. .338 Remington ultra magnum or .338 Lapua Magnum if you want to really hit those large game animals with excessive power.

I have a tikka t3x ctr in 308 with a 20" barrel. It's my most accurate and used rifle out of what i own. It's diameter at the muzzle is 0.8" so it soaks up the heat from practicing and is just flat out so consistently accurate is not even funny.
