What career would allow me to live the nautical life?

What career would allow me to live the nautical life? I want to go out to port and leave on a ship for a long period of time and then do as I please on my time ashore.

      Join the coast guard.

Merchant Marines. Don't be a coastie; you'll spend three years as a non-rate.

You act like being a non rate is even a bad thing, just dont be on a cutter. And the only people spending 3 years as non rates are MST and AST every other waitlist is either critical at 0-3 month wait or 6-12. And it helps get into fields that wpuld normally be extremely difficult as a civilian, like aviation.

          Being a non-rate is gay.
          >what did you do for your enlistment in the USCG
          >pushed a broom
          >that's it? that's all you did the entire time?
          >...yeah...
At a certain point, it's also not worth it for your career/education. You could be doing a lot in those three years. Frick, even an Associates would help you more than three years as a non-rate.

You obviously were never in the guard because non-rates are given more responsibility as E-3's than any other branch. You can get fully qualified to be a boat crew member on the deck, law enforcement team member, engineer and ice rescue team member in the span of 6 months and have a wide range of responsibilities and opportunities for action. I responded to a countless number of search and rescue cases as a non rate, and I pretty much had the same expectations in these scenarios as an E-4 or E-5 unless they were a coxswain. Your gay ass went to the navy or never went at all and thinks every thing is like the gay ass navy. Get real.

Also, no one is a non rate their entire contract in the coast guard. If you are a non rate by the time you hit the end of your first year and you arent on an A school list, youre getting drummed out. Total shitbag everyone is going to hate unless youre really really good and basically act like a petty officer. The coast guard doesnt have enough people for you to be sitting pushing a broom all day, youre going to be forced into getting qualified and doing search and rescue or law enforcement.

Go to your local yaught club and volunteer to be a deck hand. There are always rich gays needing free labor. After a year or so you can probably find someone looking for a deck hand to go on a multi month trip.

Stay out of threads you know nothing about you filthy land locked turbomoron

Can't tell if this is some kind of bait or not, but besides fishing and the Navy/CG, there is the merchant marine. Depending on the company and ship you can be out at sea as long as several months or for something like tugs, be home for dinner every day.
Pay is pretty good especially when you are an officer in a union.
Entry requires you to either go to a maritime academy for four years or to be unlicensed you can go to trade school. Not much upward mobility beyond being the captain/chief engineer which you can accomplish within a decade.
Main jobs on a ship include the engine department (making sure engines, pumps, shitters, electrical, etc are working), deck department (navigation, ship handling, painting/chipping, ship restoration, safety equipment inspection) and on bigger ships stewards department (cooks/bakers/waiters etc).
You can work oil tankers (very monotonous, but also very stable, can be stuck sitting outside port until prices become favorable), container ships (see above but more strictly adhering to a schedule), cruise ships (shit pay but imagine all the strange you get in your dress whites), tugs (hard work and long hours but some of the most interesting and varied work on the sea, OSVs (industrial water taxis), oil rigs (where the real money is at), and a whole host of other ship types.
If you still want a military element there is military sealift command for the USA which are the civilian mariners who resupply Navy vessels at sea.
All in all, usually once you are off the boat you can do whatever the hell you want innawoods as long as it's not weed because they test for that.
Also abandon the ideas of exploring foreign ports because modern merchant vessels can all be unloaded and loaded in less than 24hrs.
Shipyard will probably give you the most time ashore and that's usually in Louisiana which sucks.

How are the merchant marines worth it when they require schooling as long as college

        Anonymous

They also give you a degree at the academies.
Some are more useful than others. Generally a degree you get with your deck license will be business based and useless and an engineering degree you get with your engine license will allow you work shoreside when you decide to go for conventional. And depending on which school you go to it can actually be much cheaper than a normal college. It just sucks to be there.

Realistically you should do a few years active duty on a boat and then join a civilian vessel and get paid a ridiculous amount of money and overtime.

Gulf Coast shrimper. Everything they do is under the table and they basically collect welfare and drink all day. It’s all fun and games until there’s an oil spill.

    >I can’t work now! I need assistance
    >”ok, just provide last years tax documents how much you made so we know how much to compensate you.”
    >oh shit

Ah so that was the game behind all those sob stories during that spill. I knew there was some bs going on behind that

i heard the somalis got a wealth redistribution scheme going on if you are interested in naval matters.
jokes aside i'd recommend working on cargo ships, takes you to most important ports in the world.
