What are the issues with drum mags for machine guns?

Can we make 'em better? iirc the springs are the main problem

Ian McCollum said they're too heavy and bulky for what ammo they carry. You're better off with a nutsack of linked ammo.

Ian McCollum also said that the G36 optic has an integrated laser. This dipshit knows nothing about guns and makes up shit 90% of the time.

The problem is that his audience is normie morons. As someone who knows the G36 intimately and not just from use, I can say that he is full of shit. Now imagine what moron shit he says about guns I know frick all about.

That sounds like something you yourself made up because he never made a video on the G36

Pretty sure he did, at least on the optic.
And then there was the G36 heat controversy one which I think was under InRange.

While I support your impotent raging against Ian, you need a better reason as to why. Go with "Said the FRF2 was the best sniper rifle of the cold war because he is a francophile" is a much better argument.

It is a damn good rifle that is stupidly accurate and makes shooting out to 600yds or more child’s play. I wouldn’t say that unless I owned one. And I do.

Owning one just makes you more biased. The best sniper rifle of the cold war was the Arctic Warfare and it's not even close. It's significantly better than the FRF2.

a better example would be his AUG video where he simply 1:1 read the wikipedia article mistakes and all. or the fact he's pro gun control and is openly a leftist.

I shoot a gun that uses suomi drums and even those are significantly more annoying than magazines. I can fit 3 32 round magazines in the same web space as 1 72 round drum.

ok, how are you doing fitting 6 Ultimax mags somewhere?

Are you so combative that you can't understand someone agreeing with you? I just said I can fit 96 rounds in magazines in the same space as 72 in a drum and that it is less annoying. Maybe take a break.

that's cute that you think those are the same size. ultimax mags are more than twice as thick and larger in diameter.
                the cope is cute, though.

Ultimax mags are twice as thick as Ultimax mags?

Bulk and weight. Imagine a pouch that could fit one of those 50-ish drum mags. You could fit at least six 30 round magazines in that same pouch, so that extra 20 or so rounds in the mag comes at the cost of 130 rounds you could be carrying.

      Anonymous

Yeah, that’s why the drum goes in the gun for a first contact scenario moron, you lay down the hate with the drum, drop it when empty and switch to standard mags.

        Anonymous

Then you have the problem of having these big expensive drum magazines that are effectively single use items, and after expending it your machine gun is basically just a bigger, heavier, and more cumbersome assault rifle when it's limited to standard magazines. Why do all that when you could just use much more space and weight efficient belts of ammo?

          Anonymous

          >Why do all that when you could just use much more space and weight efficient belts of ammo?

Because my rifle doesn’t take belts, it takes mags and drums, and converting it to belt feed would be costly and and worth my time when I have many standard cap mags and a drum, you know, things you can share with your squad mates?

they are very large for the amount of ammo that they carry
compare that to one of the canvas bags clip-on with 100 linked rounds in it.

Ultimax drum is already best among drums in terms of dead weight per round, bulk and reliability

It struggles at rates of fire above 600 rds/min, but Ultimax doesn't have such high ROF. Together they work great.

I can't speak to drum mags specifically but I was fricking around with an M249 years back firing from 30 round box mags and sometimes the cyclic rate of the gun was so high, the magazine spring couldn't even feed a round before the bolt closed again.
