What are some good books over the Soviet-Afghan War?

Especially if it's from someone who actually fought there. I can only read English and a fair amount of German

Liberal propaganda. I mean, literally, Alexievich's main works were written in 80s and 90s to say "soviet man bad" and that's how she got published in the west.
http://militera.lib.ru/research/aleksievich1/04.html - a chapter from one of the Zinky Boys edition describing the accusations against the book coming from veterans and their relatives.

There are barely any notable books even in Russian.

Free Fall: A Sniper's Story from Chechnya. Nicolai Lilin
No idea if it's true or not

      >Nicolai Lilin
He's a fiction writer. As I recall, his "sniper memoirs" are a sequel to Siberian Education.

The great gamble and The bear went over the mountain are by far the best books on the topic, I recommended anyone read them.

If you are looking for a good movie, The Beast is really good, it's and 80s film, very good.

"Jihad! The Secret War in Afghanistan" by Tom Carew is unironically pretty good, as long as you dont mind that he never actually was an SAS soldier and that the story is completely made up.

The Bear went over the Mountain: Soviet Combat tactics in Afghanistan
Well written but pretty dry if you're not genuinely interested in infantry tactics
