He's not wrong. The legitimacy of the Gulf of Tonkin incident isn't even a conspiracy theory. It's an actual historical debate.

We know for a fact that NVA torpedo boats engaged an American destroyer on 8/2/64, the 'attack' two days later was likely down to radar ghosts and faulty intel

The initial attack in and of itself was questionable. The American destroyer fired a warning shot at the PT boats first. Warning shots aren't a free action, especially when you're operating off the coast of another nation.

Whatever homosexual. I'm an infantry officer in the US Army. Just because I don't buy the story of some nervous destroyer Captain doesn't make a Chinese national.

If you ever studied American history in an academic setting you'd know the Gulf of Tonkin isn't a cut and dry thing. Even the US admits this.

              >Have special forces advisors in hostile nation for a decade
              >Politically sensitive due to Chinese border and Russia being allies
              >No casus belli, so can't invade yet
              >Send Navy destroyer to do spy off the coast
              >It gets caught by 3 PT boats
              >"Oh fug warning shot"
              >They shoot back because they're in own fricking waters
              >Send in troops because you finally have an excuse to intervene.

Like I said, it's not even a conspiracy. It's just what happened.

                >cut and dry
Native English speakers know the term is "cut and dried".

                ^This

He's correct though and the US was eagerly trolling for contact. The South Vietnamese had been doing their own raids to stir the pot. Zero strategic reason existed for the US to be baited into the Viet Nam war but as soon as LBJ defiled the Oval Office we were foredoomed and fricked.

Matt was right as subsequent events like the Sino-Vietnamese war underscored.

Wait, you think Vietnam was one country back then? And the US invaded it?

You really are an infantry officer in the US army.

I never said it didn't happen. My point was that the circumstances which led to the attack were questionable, as in lacking justification. If you're spying on someone's house from across the street, and they tell you frickoff, then you swing on them and miss, you can't really claim that they started the fight.

Wait, you think Vietnam was one country back then? And the US invaded it?

You really are an infantry officer in the US army.

              >Wait, you think Vietnam was one country back then?
              That's not what I said

              >And the US invaded it?
              You're being pedantic.

Warsaw Ghetto "uprising". A few crazy israelites started a few fires, then the hysterical nature of the israelites hindered efforts to put the fires out, and of course dealing with the resulting Displaced Persons was like trying to herd cats...if the herd of cats included an amazing % of sexual perverts, child rapists and assorted other criminals.
