Matching nice clothes, hunting falcon, quality camera, no understanding of mines - got to be an arab nobleman's son. The saudi royal house has 10 000 members, well maybe 9 999 now.

they can detect nearby steps and discern between man and critters and detonate if programmed to, or let x number of people pass before arming

The big thing currently (although hardly new) is smart mines capable of being setup and managed by infantry. A bit like an autonomous claymore with man-in-the-loop to get round the whole Ottawa convention stipulation on victim actuation. Also Finland has put forward its design for a new bounding AT mine and they also have that autonomous wheeled AT "mine" in trials.

Not every IED is made from a 155mm shell. They can be big or small in yield.

    >The PTKM-1R’s transporter-launcher is equipped with acoustic and seismic sensors that detect a target by the sound it makes and the ground vibrations it induces. The target is identified by comparing a target’s acoustic and seismic signature with an internal database. The two sets of sensors allow the mine to detect a target vehicle at a distance of 100 metres. Once the target is within 50 metres (and not closer than 5 meters), the necessary flight path of the warhead is calculated. Next, the unit is tilted towards the target and the submunition launched. The submunition is projected to approximately 30 m above the ground. Using infrared and radar sensors, the submunition scans the ground and, once it is over the target, engages it.

There's a another I can't remember the name of that's American, I think you throw it behind you and Wires fire out all over that are capable of detonating it, the idea is to slow down a pursuing enemy.

Compared to a tuna can full of TNT and a pressure fuze
    >Shaped charge bottom attack
    >Magnetic/acoustic fuzing
    >Programmable, e.g. attack 3rd vehicle that drives over
    >Off-route mines
    >Self-disarming/detonating on timer
    >Smart submunition launchers as posted ITT
These aren't particularly new features, but an upgrade over WWII blast mines. There are also some bastard features such as fuzes that detonate when they detect mine detectors and blast resistant mines.

the best part is that the nations that deploy mines are majority deploying only the soviet stupid mines that have advanced wounding over WW2 mines and none of the safety features.
