        >Can you leave a treaty?
Varies by treaty. For this one, Article 20 governs withdrawal, and says any government can leave the treaty just by saying they're quitting, stating reasons, and waiting six months. However, it looks like withdrawal isn't allowed in the middle of a war, so they'd have to wait until the war is over. Which is kinda stupid, especially since Russia didn't sign the treaty and so is free to go ahead and use antipersonnel mines whenever it wants.

those cables are holding tension in the concrete. without that support the concrete more or less falls apart. concrete is good with compressive strength but has terrible tensile strength. it'll crumble if enough cables go.

Like [...] said, those cables are providing tension. Tensioned concrete is essentially a leaf spring, it's pushing up against the load of traffic, and prevents the girder from flexing down too far, which would eventually cause it to fail. It also let's you use less material to build a bridge of the desired strength.
Without the cables, the bridge won't instantly crumble and collapse, but it would be much weaker and likely collapse after a few heavy loads.
          Not an engineer though.

It's a concrete box girder bridge. If the long, parallel concrete beams are damaged under the road deck, it's no longer safe to cross. It would be different if it were a truss/cantilever/suspension bridge.

Likely uses cables to tension the box girder sections. There's a TASS video in another thread that shows the hole going straight through the box girder, with fraying steel cable in the gap.

      https://i.imgur.com/xsabeer.jpg

there is absolutely no way to safely distribute the load over the damaged area

35 meter gap max. 5 more meters and it's useless. Like any other bridge-fixing measure, this one is useless under enemy bombardment. You have to secure the area first.
Pontooning isn't an option either, unless Russians are yet more moronic than people thought as of today, because it'll take the entire pontooning capability of the Russian Federation, and of course that pontoon bridge would be extremely easy to detect and destroy, like Severskiy Donets crossing on easy mode. There's no fixing this, except by pushing the entire Ukrainian force in the south 100 kilometers away from Kherson. If that could have been done, Russians would have done it a long time ago. This will only get worse for Ivan, like a hangman's noose that will only tighten as the hanged man struggles to free himself.

So... 100 days of Russia focusing on that part of the front ?

The last 20 days saw the Russians take barely 200 km2 while shelling the whole length of the front.
Them trying for a 100 km push would be comical at best.

those kinds of bridges have tendons running underneath the road, they basically make regular reinforced concrete stronger than even pre-stressed concrete. that makes them very cheap - a lot of highway bridges in the uk and other places are of that design. only problem is that if the cables fray, corrode or get cut outright - the whole thing might as well be made of tissues and good wishes. there is a reason why existing ones in the uk get inspected every year for even minimal signs of fraying or corrosion. with advances in pre-stressed construction these kinds of bridges have fallen out of favour and it even was outlawed in some places.

fixing the road surface will do nothing to fix the structural damage, you need to get to the cables - untension them slowly (over days or even weeks) then put in new ones and tension them (again, over days or even weeks.) it's perfectly doable - in peace-time, if you close the thing for weeks and have experienced engineers working off plans. if you don't have the contrustion plans - add a few weeks for structural surveying. in short: the thing is essentially a bobby trap for anything other than pedestrians or a few cars at a time going slowly.

This but unironically and with sheets of metal

You guys seriously have no idea how badly the integrity of that road has been fricked with. It's not about making it good enough for some Ladas or Toyotas to cross, it needs to be capable of holding the weight of MBTs, SPGs, a medley of light armored vehicles, S-300 and 400 batteries, etc. Trying to cross the bridge with any heavy equipment is going to be a problem, and you can forget about moving them across in volume without creating a traffic jam.

      Anonymous

More importantly it needs to bear the weight of all the trucks needed to bring ammo from the new depots outside HIMARS (well, for now) range.
With the cables cut that segment of the bridge can collapse at any moment.

        Anonymous

It's a concrete box girder bridge. If the long, parallel concrete beams are damaged under the road deck, it's no longer safe to cross. It would be different if it were a truss/cantilever/suspension bridge.

Likely uses cables to tension the box girder sections. There's a TASS video in another thread that shows the hole going straight through the box girder, with fraying steel cable in the gap.

Okay what would happen if Ukraine hit that bridge again and that cable got ripped apart?

          Anonymous

those cables are holding tension in the concrete. without that support the concrete more or less falls apart. concrete is good with compressive strength but has terrible tensile strength. it'll crumble if enough cables go.

said, those cables are providing tension.

Ferries would be way too slow, we're talking like two orders of magnitude slower. And if you mean larger barges, those are just easy targets that can easily be seen by the NATO surveillance drones.

so it's a 2 hour detour to get to Kherson city via dam. Will help isolate the city in future ukie advance, expose Russian supply lines a bit. Not a huge deal though, least not for now

Wait until they start cluster-mining the dam bridge on a daily basis.

      Anonymous

That beam actually runs abeam to the actual dam (you can see the gates in the pic) and the part that runs over the dam itself is just a railroad track that can't really support vehicles.

        Anonymous

        *bridge

Actually, sorry, I'm incorrect, the rails you can see in the pic are for this gantry thing. The rail line is on the other side of the dam and might actually be able to be hit as well without threatening it.

The accuracy of whatever the frick they've been shooting at the Kherson bridge is good enough to pop this one as well without harming the dam,

          Anonymous

yeah. whatever they're using (HIMARS or other guided munitions) has the accuracy to hit that if they can manage to delete one of those microwave comms trucks right near the dam with minimal collateral damage.

          Anonymous

There's also a very narrow smaller bridge crossing the lock before the dam where the road is right next to the railway. Could just take that out using GPS-guided whatever the frick and wouldn't need to even scratch the dam really.

Far easier than the main span to rebuild but just keep spamming it every day. Throw cluster mines in nearby for shits and giggles too.

                >HIMARS will be destroyed sooner or later.
How? The Ukrainians know their own territory; they have satellite and drone live feeds; and they have night vision. They know exactly where the Russians are, and there's no reason to believe that, short a tremendous intelligence frickup, they'd ever be so dumb to put their weaponry into range of Russian fire. And even if they did - so what? The HIM in HIMARS stands for "high mobility" - within minutes of having fired the system can be moved again, and arguable easier so since now it's not carrying a payload anymore. It takes time to get a fix on a system's location, to adjust your artillery to it, and then to fire.

Short of the Russians constantly keeping taps on the front line (good luck doing that with the couple hundred drones that they're getting from Iran; I'm curious how they'll perform outside of Shia propaganda) or some traitor revealing their positions there's abso-fricking-lutely nothing the Russians can do.

tl; dr: Vatnik cope is pathetic.

Patience. They know the HIMARS range and know that they are being used to hit high value targets. HIMARS exist outside of just traveling to and from a launch site and Russia still has air superiority.

What I'm curious about is why Russia is still allowing Western resupplies. Sure, they can't shoot down a C130 because that'll cause a significant incident. But what happened to bombing roads and railways in Western Uki-land?

it really says a lot that russia can't find short-range rocket artillery that leaves smoke plumes pointing directly the launch site. having seen the absolute state of russian drones' optics, it's probably too blurry to discern the plumes. and perhaps this "air superiority" is more like air parity, given russia's persistent inability to delete a few poxy trucks.

Meanwhile Russian demographics are absolutely terminal; technically they can't afford to lose any of their men, but the government cadre still think that Russian families have 7 children instead of less than two (if you're going to believe Russian propaganda, which I don't). You still don't have air superiority until you can actually, y'know, use your own. If you can't because your enemy has enough AA capabilities left to shoot them down the second they take to the skies then you have BY DEFINITION not achieved air superiority.

it really says a lot that russia can't find short-range rocket artillery that leaves smoke plumes pointing directly the launch site. having seen the absolute state of russian drones' optics, it's probably too blurry to discern the plumes. and perhaps this "air superiority" is more like air parity, given russia's persistent inability to delete a few poxy trucks.

It's why the R*ssoid menace is in kind of a bind: Fly too high and get picked up and shot down by proper AA systems, fly too low and you get assraped by MANPADS, Stingers and so on instead. It's why we've seen these videos of those morons using their attack helicopters as ultra shitty indirect artillery by pitching up their noses and firing their unguided missiles in an arc.

Yes, I've heard all this. So I guess the ongoing Russian air sorties are taking heavy casualties? Or are their pilots just that insane/good?

          >ultra shitty indirect artillery
I don't know how it's possible to calculate effectiveness from the information we have, but you do know that those helis have targeting computers for those rockets, right? The pilots are not just blowing their missile loads randomly just hoping to hit something.

Even entertaining the idea of them flying bombing runs on Western Ukraine just shows that you haven't been paying attention since April at least.

Uh, no, that's exactly what they are doing. But please, do tell us which "rockets controlled by targeting computers" (sic) were fired here for example:

Should be easy to identify for an ordnance expert such as yourself.

                >ordnance expert
If doing some googling is enough for you to consider me an expert then so be it. You said it, not me!

Mi-28s can be fitted with guided missiles, but by the number of rockets in those salvos I'm guessing they are shooting S-8 unguided rockets. The thing is, unguided MLRS can still be targeted.... by a computer... because the missile has a known range. I mean, do you think something like the BM-30 also just jizzes its load into the wind each time it fires? lmao

                >telegram videos of russian jets flying over contested territory

No, dummy. The pilot fires when the targeting system tells him he's in range. Or do you have access to a Mi-28 manual from which you're pulling your shit?

I mean ... had you watched the video you wouldn't need to be asking this. We have a S*viet manual of exactly this kind of maneuver (cold war NVA manual):

                >Nachteile: [...]

                >Disadvantages: [...] Low hit probability when shooting with UR (unguided rockets). The large scattering and relatively low penetration performance reduce the effectiveness against armored targets or targets in cover extremely heavily. Unguided rockets are effective against large, unarmored group targets when used in an attack while climbing.

But as I said, if what keeps you from killing yourself are these terrible "the computer will magically make those unguided rockets hit because, uh, it'll tell the pilot when to fire them" takes then go ahead and keep coping.

            >So I guess the ongoing Russian air sorties are taking heavy casualties?
No, they're just firing from well behind their own lines. Pay attention, stupid. They're virtually not doing any sorties in actual contest zones (let alone Ukie-controlled areas). Even entertaining the idea of them flying bombing runs on Western Ukraine just shows that you haven't been paying attention since April at least.

None of us know how structurally damaged the bridge is, all I'm saying is if I'm a Russian commander with Russian levels of care about my guys I simply plate the holes and send a T-72 over it.
Either we have a bridge we can keep using or we lose a single T-72 which isn't much considering how many they have lost already.

Sure. And then the bridge collapses completely, and you're shut off completely. Nice going, Comrade moron. Please stand by, a special military troop is going to pick you up to transport you to your Gulag.

What would you do instead? Just not use the bridge because it might collapse and be in the exact same situation as if it had collapsed?

Just because its use is severely diminished doesn't mean it's gone. They've driven civil vehicles over it, so there's at least some use you can get out of it. But if you instead start sending military-grade shit over it, and it actually collapses, then that use is gone, too.

T-72's go up to 44.5 tonnes. Your average car goes up to 2 tonnes.

Yes, and bridges are generally designed to have bumper to bumper truck traffic as a worse case scenario.
Russian truck weight limit is 44 tons before it's considered over weight, similar to most of the world.

No shit, so consider the weight it was designed to take in the first place.
20 meter long trucks each weighing 44 tons bumper to bumper in 4 lanes over it's 1366 meter span.
                >1366m / 20m = 68 trucks
                >times 4 lanes = 272 trucks
                >times 44 tons per truck = 11,968 tons safe working load
I'm not pro Russian and I want to see Putin commit suicide with 2 shots to the back of the head but it doesn't change the fact bridges are over engineered as frick and the USSR unlike Russia could actually build things that last.

How much do you think it's compromised? 20%? 80%?
It's need to be at least 75% for it to not handle a single tank every 20 meters.

We will see tanks drive over it again because reality it's partisan.

                >How much do you think it's compromised? 20%? 80%?

those kinds of bridges have tendons running underneath the road, they basically make regular reinforced concrete stronger than even pre-stressed concrete. that makes them very cheap - a lot of highway bridges in the uk and other places are of that design. only problem is that if the cables fray, corrode or get cut outright - the whole thing might as well be made of tissues and good wishes. there is a reason why existing ones in the uk get inspected every year for even minimal signs of fraying or corrosion. with advances in pre-stressed construction these kinds of bridges have fallen out of favour and it even was outlawed in some places.

fixing the road surface will do nothing to fix the structural damage, you need to get to the cables - untension them slowly (over days or even weeks) then put in new ones and tension them (again, over days or even weeks.) it's perfectly doable - in peace-time, if you close the thing for weeks and have experienced engineers working off plans. if you don't have the contrustion plans - add a few weeks for structural surveying. in short: the thing is essentially a bobby trap for anything other than pedestrians or a few cars at a time going slowly.

                Wet Tissue%.
Also: the reason why it's a cable bridge in the first place is because it was cheaper to build.
                >so much for Soviet infrastructure

You know that's why all infrastructure is how it is right? No government gets a $250m quote and a $500m quote and takes the $500m one unless they are corrupt.

that's not how things work irl, the bridge doesn't have fricking hitpoints.
the maximum force under a heavy trucks axle is more likely to be a problem than total load on most highway bridges. that value is likely not even compromised in the least on the opposite end of the bridge. but in and near the area where the hits are it's a small portion of what it needs to allow a truck or tank to pass. and again: that damage is to the entire structure, not just the road surface - putting down some steel plates for the tank to drive on does shit all if it still rests on the compromised portion. basically, you'd have to build a bridge on top of the existing one over the compromised length. also you'd need to figure out how extensive the degradation is.

could you drive tanks over it? maybe, if you take it slow and go one at a time. is there a decent chance you'd end up in the water? yes. is there a big chance the bridge will collapse after a few dozens crossings? yes. is there any way to assure the bridge is safe - and won't just collapse on you at any moment - without extensive surveying and repairs? no.
