Is the tank itself leaking, or is it the pipe/joint/valve leading to the tank that's leaking? If it's the tank itself, it's fricked and needs to be replaced. If it's a pipe/joint/valve, it can likely be replaced or repaired pretty easily. $1600 for a new water heater to be installed is a totally reasonable price as well.

Take pictures to show where it's leaking if you can.

      This guy is delusional
I got a new tank at Lowes for a few hundred and installed it myself with zero experience in an afternoons time, broken into two days to go to the plumbing store and completly redo the water pipes connection to the tank.

Replacing a water heater is easy but op sounds like a moron so I wouldn't trust him to do anything more than tightening his hose connections

It's a totally reasonable price for a professional. Can you do it cheaper yourself? Absolutely. But getting a licensed plumber to do it is going to cost money.

Licenses make sense when it comes to contractors. It means that you have recourse if the work is done improperly (not up to code, for example)
If your water heater isn't electric, meaning gas lines are involved, trying to save money by hiring a handyman or doing it yourself could result in deadly consequences.

          Thanks though

From your absolutely moronic babyspeak, you trying to DIY literally anything will only cost more because you're going to frick it up.

A non-idiot would find the source of the leak and attemp to repair only that component.

But I come from money so we can afford more costs but if I learn myself it's best so I ask - HOW DO?

I'm also taking it half-seriously because I doubt I can actually fix it.

Turns out when I put the valve back on the water is squirting up out of the tank. I thought it was coming down from the aluminum/metal wide-mouth pipe (I don't have any idea of this terminology, so bear with me and my moronicness), but it's pushing up out of the tank.

I know my in-law definitely didn't have "annual maintenance" done (as apparently you're supposed to) so I was thinking of aiming to drain the tank myself into the sump pit to see if that fixes it. Outside of that, I'm not sure what to do, which valve to turn, or what button to press.

It's a Rheem model, if that helps.

We need pictures. Is the water leaking from a joint/pipe/valve, or is there a hole in the tank?

Take photos you mongoloid. I'm assuming you're talking about the exhaust venting when you say "wide mouth pipe" but I'm not even sure your heaters ran off gas just based off the information you've given

Pretty sure it's gas, some warning sticker on the tank said something about gas being involved. If I blow up I'm okay with that too, so meh.

I broke my phone and I don't have an extension cable long enough to get my computer camera from one part of the house to the basement so I can't really take pictures.

Find the model number of the hot water heater. Use that to find a picture of the heater online. Use MS paint to draw an arrow to where the water is leaking from. Until we know where exactly the water is leaking from, this is hopeless.

Just pay the plumber then. You're right.

My tank, in the place I rented, was turned up to hot I guess and the emergency valve or whatever kicked in one day I thought a pipe blew or something there was water fricking everywhere, plumber told me I needed a new tank so my landlord needed to be involved. Turns out the tank was brand new and just on too hot. Dont let those plumber homosexuals take advantage of you OP EVERY plumber is a piece of complete human garbage and that's why they are plumbers

OP here. Working on getting more info or pictures. The tank is spewing out of the top. Not moron, just don't care for blue collar stuff because lack tools and proper guidance, talking like moron to make simple annoying chore more entertaining to self.

Is it coming out at some pipe? Copper pipe? Soldered? Threaded? Or some glued PVC or that newfangled PEX stuff?

Not too hard installing one depending where it’s at. Repaired the one at my old house a few months back and just installed a new one at the new house.

Even if your parents have the money to replace it, sometimes it’s fun to learn a new skill. After you rip the old shit out, installing the new one is like LEGOs.

Probably fine except I'm not comfortable fricking with a gas line so I decided to leave it alone. Not sure what the specific leak is still, other things got in the way today. It just seems too convenient it flooded when it did, so it makes you think, y'know?

Adding to this - I miss LEGOs. I'm gonna go be a child-adult and order myself some. Thanks for reminding me I'm not ready to adult yet.

I DID manage to learn stuff about plumbing today, but no real way to practice any blue collar skills without fricking something up around the house. Can't risk that, money being a ghost and all.

        that pic looks like shit
it would have taken like 5 minutes and looked a hell of a lot better if you would have used PEX

if its coming from the tank itself the thing is fricked
1.6k for a true legal installation is not a bad price even the cheap water heaters are 400+ now after you consider the time and effort its going to take to get the old one out which is heavy as frick and the new one in which is just slightly lighter then adapting the plumbing its a good 4 hour job
