Filters treat water faster, they remove physical debris, and they don't harm your digestive system. Chemical treatment is a backup for when your filter fails or you lose it.

Yes it is. My filter can do 1 liter in a minute. Your aquamira treatment requires it to sit for 5 minutes. It's literally 5 times longer. Another benefit of my filter is that I can dump the bladder when I need to drop the extra weight for a portage or a big incline. You on the other hand either have to keep the weight, or waste your precious treatment.
>Making shot up
Exposure to higher concentrations might cause serious side effects. It is a respiratory irritant compound; hence, it may cause irritation of eyes, nose, throat and lungs [18]. Also, the ingestion of these products may cause irritation of the mouth, esophagus and stomach, with severe irritative digestive symptoms; nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, in addition to serious hematological (methemoglobinemia, hemolysis and disseminated intravascular coagulation), cardiovascular and kidney disorders, including renal failure [4, 21–23]. Therefore, the permitted amount of chlorine dioxide and chlorine levels per volume of water in drinking water is highly regulated [3]. It has been observed that the concentrations of these commercialized products exceed the maximum limits allowed in drinking water in countries where chlorine dioxide or sodium chlorite have been marketed as therapeutic agents.

I mix it in a tiny bottle and it activates while I’m hiking. It’s ready by the time I reach a water source. I dump it into a bottle of dirty water and drink from an already treated bottle. There’s literally no wait time. This is t a debate; it’s why people going for FKT’s use drops or tabs.

So you do other things while waiting for it to activate. What's your point? You can do the same thing with a gravity filter, but it's still 5 times faster.
>Doesn’t make any sense but you’re an idiot so it’s not surprising
It makes perfect sense. The water in the bladder isn't filtered yet. It comes out as you squeeze it to drink. Imagine not knowing how a squeeze filter works.
>“The exact chlorine dioxide solution concentration was unknown, although it was referred as high.” Thanks.
Do you think the "allowable" amount is the same for kids and adults, men and women, large and small people? The truth is that even if you don't have any acute symptoms, you're still hurting yourself in the long run with that shit. But hey, you keep destroying your digestive system, not my problem.

We’ll:
The solution has a short shelf life when mixed (just a few days, supposedly). They’re mixed, the chlorine dioxide is activated by the acid solution (whatever that means), then it’s added to water.
The tablets taste like shit, while this has no taste at all. I’ve had it down into the low 20’s and it didn’t freeze. Of course you’re looking at extreme edge cases; it’s generally not that cold. And you can do the same thing people do to prevent their filters from freezing. Tablets and drops are both significantly lighter than a filter.
But my main reason is ease of use and convenience. My process is something like this: >mix a & b when I arrive into 2 tiny 10ml bottles (or just 1 bottle, depending on the location and time of year) >get to a water source >finish off a 1L bottle >fill it with dirty water >dump in the mixture >refill my tiny 10ml bottle
All of this is done without taking off my pack, fricking around with a filter, or filtering in a less-than-great location. Inb4 “filters aren’t that big of a hassle,” as if I didn’t already fall for the filter meme.
>But my main reason is ease of use and convenience.
If you’ve never pushed yourself physically on a long hike then you’re just a homosexual (but most likely a liar). A lighter pack is always easier to carry, no matter how strong you are (I actually train for hikes, unlike 99% of PrepHole. And like I’ve shown repeatedly, the only downside to Aquamira is the absolute seething from the filter users who think it’s dangerous.

I don’t follow what you’re trying to say. Do you have it in your mind that I parse out parts A and B into smaller containers? Not sure where you got that. Seven drops of both A and B get mixed into a 10ml bottle. This is a necessary step; you don’t drop the chemicals straight into untreated water. I know you’re new and don’t understand how this works, but that’s no excuse for not looking something up before shitting your opinion into the thread. >The tablets don’t even taste either

I know you’re moronic because you pick the most complicated method of water treatment and then come here taking about the main reason you choose that method is because of how easy and convenient it it, despite it being literally the least convenient and most arduous.

Dropping a tablet into a bottle is faster and easier than pre-mixing some solution.
You still have to wait for your drops to be effective, so wait time is not a factor considered part of actual use

I’m pretty sure people who use drops (and I guess tabs) hike with two water bottles for this reason. One has already been treated and is ready to drink, while the other is “working” (for lack of a better term). I followed a few guys trying fastest known times like Anon mentioned earlier in the thread, and a lot do use Aquamira drops with two bottles (three actually, since a lot have a shoulder bottle as well).
This is Jeff Garmires gear list for a calandra year triple crown, which I think he holds the record for. https://freeoutside.com/basic-gear-list-finally/

Logically, having to pre-mix a solution every time or every other time you wanna fill and treat a water bottle is comparatively the most difficult and time consuming method outside of boiling.

I go out in canada bro, every single lake is filled with beavers here.
Ever hear the term beaver fever? Its not about veganas it means youll get giardia from drinking beaver water. I drink over 4L a day in summer and there is no way im boiling all that.
I use a lifestraw-go water bottle for drinking and a backup sawyer squeeze.
I only do this if I'm above the treeline. I figure at that point, there's probably very few creatures who would be pissing and shitting in the water upstream.
Might be a mountain goat gargling the water before you are though
Is it really that bad to filter water with a millbank bag and then boil it? I don't care if it takes time and effort. I don't want to go out in the woods only to be dependent on expensive consoomables that make my life "convenient", if I wanted that I'd stay at home. I don't speak from a hiking perspective but more of a bushcraft sort of thing. Browsing for these stupid hi-tech water filters gives me a headache. I know that they do not filter viruses and on top of all, toxic chemicals or heavy metals if there are any in the water. Boiling water kills everything killable, and you can't filter the chemical shit anyway, so what's the point in getting a filter? Just because it's convenient?
Boiling water is as effective as filtering (or more so since it kills viruses), but it's a pretty big pain in the ass if you're on a backpacking or canoe trip, constantly having to stop, start a fire, wait for the water to boil, wait for the water to cool etc.
Straw are are best an emergency filter. The ability to store up water, take it with you, pour it into your cooking vessel is what you want hiking and camping, otherwise you are tied to your water source.
I've been using the standard squeeze. If I was in an area with things like standing pools, run off from mining, etc. or other things that would contribute to more contamination I plan to skip straight to a pump that can deal with heavy metals.
Have another friend who's very insistent on filter and boil but I can't see doing that unless research indicated a need or you intended to camp one spot for a while.
I drink straight from mountain streams, nothing in there but pure bear shit. Down lower or with stagnant water up high I have a Squeeze. Anything else like water in civilization or near mining sites you should get a pump filter and be extremely cautious or just pack your water. I usually take like 5 or 6 of these straws with me when I go camp overnight.
Kinda expensive for a single-use straw if you ask me, but better than getting giardia
It’s a plastic straw, only metal straws can be reused, and it’s too complicated to clean.
Why do you think they come individually wrapped, hello?
Pretty gross if you reuse the same straw over and over

Lifestraw is a great example of how a successful and viral marketing campaign can make a mediocre product more popular than a good one.
They just put ads online of little african kids drinking from muddy puddles and the world went crazy over this new amazing portable water filtration technology! Little did the world know, that technology has been around for a long time, and the lifestraw is by far the least pleasant way of using it.
The katadyn befree is probably the best option.
Sawyer isn’t available where I live (only through Amazon and a ton of reviews say it’s bootleg), what’s a good filter to use for a decent amount water? For drinking and cooking.
Platypus QuickDraw > Sawyer
The caps it has make it easier to throw in your pack or take in your sleeping bag with you so it doesn’t freeze, and not have to worry about it leaking water
Do Lifestraws have an expiration date? I bought one 6 or 7 years ago and never used it. I want to know if I can keep it forever and use it if one day I need it.

>Go back to your survivalist YouTube videos with their one is none bullshit.
cope
Yeah as I said, it's a good backup option but it's not something you want to be consuming liters of every day. Even the chlorine in your tap water is bad for you over longer periods of time.
>how do you know?
Because you hadn’t even heard the term “Aquamira” until this thread.
>you have to wait 5 minutes for it to activate.
>I can dump out my water but you can’t
Doesn’t make any sense but you’re an idiot so it’s not surprising
>look at this study I googled about a single case
“The exact chlorine dioxide solution concentration was unknown, although it was referred as high.” Thanks.
>cope
Too close to home, huh?
>Because you hadn’t even heard the term “Aquamira” until this thread.
Again, I'm not a brandgay. The fact that you're so fixated on one particular brand and associate it with all forms of water treatment is testament to how much of a consoooomer homosexual you are.
>I mix it in a tiny bottle and it activates while I’m hiking. It’s ready by the time I reach a water source.
>I drink straight from the filter
Jesus fricking Christ.
It's a water bottle. See:
Really exposing yourself here.
>The squeeze weighs 3oz
>Pull the bottle out, catch water, drink while you walk.
Did you know that 5% of municipalities in the US with a population over 100k people use chlorine dioxide as water treatment?
Yeah and a lot of them also put fluoride (a neurotoxin) in their water supplies for profit. What's that supposed to prove?
It proves that you’re a weird hypochondriac, and the first case study you found on Google then posted in a lame attempt to prove the dangers of chlorine dioxide is just confirmation bias and shows you’re desperate to be right for some reason. You didn’t even know what Aquamira was before reading the thread, so you didn’t have an opinion on it until now. You can talk about brand names, but we both know that’s bullshit. “What do you mean by Kleenex? Oh you should have said a ‘facial tissue.’ I’m not a brand gay.”
>you’re a weird hypochondriac
The topic we’re all discussing is health and safety
>You didn’t even know what Aquamira was before reading the thread
Not him, I’m
and
You sound sound like an angry sperg. We’re all starting from the same place, dirty water, and getting to the same place, clean water. Your way is outdated and you’re clinging to it like a moron. Chlorine is toxic to microbes, so yes it does work to treat water and yes it does damage your gut health. The only rebuttal you have is not wanting to carry a 3oz filter. Probably all the flouride clouding your mind. Maybe switch to Iodine? It will clean that flouride out of your brain and filter your water just as effectively as bleach without poisoning you
>The only rebuttal you have is not wanting to carry a 3oz filter.
Bro, I told you why I carry it, and it’s not weight. I could post it again, but why? You’ve ignored it two or three times already.
>outdated
There was a push by Sawyer about two decades ago to tell everyone Giardia was a serious threat in an attempt to sell filters. It’s not a serious threat in the US, but everyone bought the meme.
>bleach
Yep, you’re moronic.
What the frick are you talking about?
>I told you why I carry it, and it’s not weight
It’s not weight? Cool I guess my Squeeze also weighs nothing now. Your mental gymnastics is making my pack lighter by the minute.
>It’s not a serious threat in the US, but everyone bought the meme
Go drink downstream from beavers or cows and when you’re shitting your guts out remember that Giardia does not have a U.S. Visa therefore cannot be in this country
>You should consume known toxic substances, it's good for you
>The squeeze weighs 3oz
you're complaining about carrying an extra 85 grams for clean water? How weak are you bro?
We’ll:
>But my main reason is ease of use and convenience.
If you’ve never pushed yourself physically on a long hike then you’re just a homosexual (but most likely a liar). A lighter pack is always easier to carry, no matter how strong you are (I actually train for hikes, unlike 99% of PrepHole. And like I’ve shown repeatedly, the only downside to Aquamira is the absolute seething from the filter users who think it’s dangerous.
So you drink tap water, case closed
The flow rate on these is very slow. I mean yeah, you can drink straight from the filter, but most people filter into a water bottle. Same with the Squeeze on a SmartWater bottle (which is even worse since the bottle can’t collapse).
>and they don't harm your digestive system
Is that so? Looks like I'll have to discard this option, My guts aren't the best. Shame because I thought it was attractive and definitely less of a bother than filters.
I think I'll just settle on a good reliable way to boil water. It seems the safest and most bombproof option.
I’m confused why anyone would use this.
Why is there two different bottles?
Why is that necessary?
Just use the tablets.
Tablets also don’t freeze
The solution has a short shelf life when mixed (just a few days, supposedly). They’re mixed, the chlorine dioxide is activated by the acid solution (whatever that means), then it’s added to water.
The tablets taste like shit, while this has no taste at all. I’ve had it down into the low 20’s and it didn’t freeze. Of course you’re looking at extreme edge cases; it’s generally not that cold. And you can do the same thing people do to prevent their filters from freezing. Tablets and drops are both significantly lighter than a filter.
But my main reason is ease of use and convenience. My process is something like this:
>mix a & b when I arrive into 2 tiny 10ml bottles (or just 1 bottle, depending on the location and time of year)
>get to a water source
>finish off a 1L bottle
>fill it with dirty water
>dump in the mixture
>refill my tiny 10ml bottle
All of this is done without taking off my pack, fricking around with a filter, or filtering in a less-than-great location. Inb4 “filters aren’t that big of a hassle,” as if I didn’t already fall for the filter meme.
>ease of use and convenience
>having to mix shit together
Pick one
You make it even worse with your method of refilling smaller bottles from a larger bottle, and then mixing.
Sounds stupid and convoluted.
The tablets don’t even taste either.
You’re a very strange person
>I can’t handle two dropper bottles
Sad
>refilling smaller bottles from a larger bottle then mixing
I don’t follow what you’re trying to say. Do you have it in your mind that I parse out parts A and B into smaller containers? Not sure where you got that. Seven drops of both A and B get mixed into a 10ml bottle. This is a necessary step; you don’t drop the chemicals straight into untreated water. I know you’re new and don’t understand how this works, but that’s no excuse for not looking something up before shitting your opinion into the thread.
>The tablets don’t even taste either
You could have just said “I’ve never done any of this.”
>it’s easy and convenient
>I just have to make sure to count out seven drops each from two different bottles in order to pre-mix a solution in a separate bottle every time (or every other time) I wanna treat my water
Just use tables or a filter and stop being so damn autistic
Tablets don’t taste btw, I know from personal experience
>”tablets don’t have a taste”
>drinks a tiny trickle straight from the filter on a collapsing water bottle
>didn’t understand the standard way of using Aquamira until reading this thread, but somehow had an opinion on it
What a homosexual. Just as always, the consensus of PrepHole is dead wrong about something. Next I’ll hear about how great bivvies and milsurp are.
They don’t have a taste, tablets are what I started with before I got a filter.
>tiny trickle
You’re probably thinking of the mini
>collapsing bottle
Just unscrew the filter a bit to let air back in the bottle, and then tighten it back down.
I get you’re moronic, but you can’t actually be THAT moronic to not know that, right?
I know you’re moronic because you pick the most complicated method of water treatment and then come here taking about the main reason you choose that method is because of how easy and convenient it it, despite it being literally the least convenient and most arduous.
Do you even go PrepHole or are you just one of the spergs on here who gets really autistic and defensive when someone contradicts them with their real world experience?
Post some OC and prove you actually go outside
>it’s not easy
Lol
>it’s not convenient
Explained three times already
Comparatively what you are describing is the hardest and least convenient method of water treatment outside of boiling.
Filling a bottle and dropping in a tablet, or screwing on a filter is unquestionably faster and easier, yet here you are still trying to argue like a sperg.
Pretty funny really
Btw that pic isn’t OC, I’ve seen it on here probably 5-6 times over the last 8 months
>Faster and easier
Now I know you're stupid. Lol. Those tablets, all of them, require 30 minutes to sanitize and 4 hours for cryptosporidium. Having that kind of lead time in your drinking water is not only inconvenient, if you need the water in short order it's also hazardous.
I think he used a squeeze for his Great Western Loop (which he set the record for a few years ago), probably because of logistics. But maybe I’m wrong?
Ive thought about switching just to shave an ounce but I don’t know if it’s worth it.
The weirdest part is a fat child telling me that what I’m using now, and my opinion of the convenience of it, is somehow wrong, despite me having used filters for about two decades. It’s just so strange to tell someone “you don’t actually find this thing comparatively better, despite decades of first hand experience.” I mean can you honestly say that someone else finds Item 1 more or less convenient than Item 2, when convenience is absolutely objective?
Logically, having to pre-mix a solution every time or every other time you wanna fill and treat a water bottle is comparatively the most difficult and time consuming method outside of boiling.
Anyone can see that.
Why are you so mad about that fact tho?
Why do you need people to agree with your obvious and objectively incorrect statements?
Just go outside already
>Anyone can see that
Except for the people who’ve done it and know better
Just stop eating junk food already.
There are arguments for drops, but ease and convenience isn’t a good argument since it’s the most difficult and least convenient method of water treatment outside of boiling.
In the time it took you to measure out your first seven drops, I’ve already screwed my filter on my bottle and started drinking.
>Do you even go PrepHole or are you just one of the spergs on here who gets really autistic and defensive when someone contradicts them with their real world experience?
Read the whole thread, it’s pretty obvious what camp he’s in. He alternately namegays then drops it to samegay himself using the same talking points
You’ve ruined your tastebuds with junk food, fat boy.
You are morbidly obese and you shouldn’t be posting images of your body online. You should be ashamed of yourself.
give me one good reason to spend $30 on 60ml when I could spend like 80c on 2 liters of unscented bleach
They’re not the same thing
https://0201.nccdn.net/4_2/000/000/04d/add/dcs---chlorine-dioxide-vs-bleach.pdf
>They’re not the same thing
brilliant observation, I'm still yet to see a good reason especially considering what you linked is from a company that sells dioxide
You caught “Big Chlorine-Dioxide” in their diabolical plot to promote fake news to unsuspecting consumers! Good job, big guy!
still waiting dawg
Black person you thought they were the same thing. Europeans are such pathetic buttholes. Stick to your 2km “hikes” down dirt roads between farms and calling it “backpacking.”
>Black person you thought they were the same thing.
lol ok moron
>Europeans are such pathetic buttholes.
Are the Europeans in the room with you right now?
Literally never heard of that shit, must not be too ubiquitous newbie.
nice bait
I drink water straight from the stream like a caveman
There was a controversial study that came out a few years ago showing that the risks from streams and creeks are highly exaggerated. It was only controversial in that people didn’t want to believe it, and instead held on tightly to their conditioning.
Same here bro but geargays guna geargay
>wahh wahh your a geargay if you use a water filter
I go out in canada bro, every single lake is filled with beavers here.
Ever hear the term beaver fever? Its not about veganas it means youll get giardia from drinking beaver water. I drink over 4L a day in summer and there is no way im boiling all that.
I use a lifestraw-go water bottle for drinking and a backup sawyer squeeze.
Funny old mate Dick Proenneke drank straight from creeks for years no problems but you keep buying all the gear, gay
Only source I downright refuse to drink from is cow water, I don’t care how many times you filter it that shit is disgusting.
I use the Philmont method.
Pour water into your Nalgene through a cotton bandana to filter out large particles.
Use a micropur tablet to eliminate pathogens. Each one takes 4 hours so have a constant rotation going so you always have drinkable water on hand.
Water for meals will be filtered and then boiled instead of tablet purified.
Sawyer squeeze (not the mini unless you’re a UL gay) and you’ll be set
I usually take like 5 or 6 of these straws with me when I go camp overnight.
Kinda expensive for a single-use straw if you ask me, but better than getting giardia
Anon...you know you can use them more than once?
It’s a plastic straw, only metal straws can be reused, and it’s too complicated to clean.
Why do you think they come individually wrapped, hello?
Pretty gross if you reuse the same straw over and over
I’ve never heard of people doing FKT’s switching to tablets or drops. If that’s true maybe I’ll check it out. Aside from that how can anyone believe filters are a meme? The squeeze weighs 3oz, can last for hundreds of miles of hiking, and you don’t even have to take your pack off. Pull the bottle out, catch water, drink while you walk. If you need to carry extra clean water just have an extra bottle and fill it up with the filter in 2 minutes. Fricking moronic ass boomers out here with their bleach drops. How’s that micro biome doing?
How do you guys use these? Do you have to bend over and suck on it to get all the water out into your mouth?
The same way Aquamira guy sucks wieners yeah. Just use a Swueeze attached to a smartwater bottle. Some people carry lifestraws as a backup but every single thru hiker carry’s a Squeeze
can anyone recommend or argue against the katadyn vario? im very close to buying it but unfortunately i am moronic and rely on the advice of strangers on PrepHole to make my decisions for me
Lifestraw is a great example of how a successful and viral marketing campaign can make a mediocre product more popular than a good one.
They just put ads online of little african kids drinking from muddy puddles and the world went crazy over this new amazing portable water filtration technology! Little did the world know, that technology has been around for a long time, and the lifestraw is by far the least pleasant way of using it.
The katadyn befree is probably the best option.
What's this meme about lifestraws being "unpleasant" to use?
They're incredibly fricking easy.
Just dip your bottle in a lake, screw on the lid, and wa-la, you have drinkable water.
It's not exactly rocket science to use lol
wait you don't have to suck like everyone says? you can just attach it to a bottle and use it to drink normally?
Does anyone even use this shit outside of larping trips where you pretend to be stranded
Katadyn BeFree for life. Just put it on better bottle, like HydraPak Flux.
Do Lifestraws have an expiration date? I bought one 6 or 7 years ago and never used it. I want to know if I can keep it forever and use it if one day I need it.
afaik if it wasn't used it's as good as new but don't take my answer for granted. there are answers to this on the manufacturer's website I think
