War in VR

These will never be possible or even feasible. Neither is space combat, or for that matter, the “future” shown in Gundam, Macross, Trek, Star Wars or any of the other IPs…save advancements into VR maybe to the point of simulacra. In short, would fighting wars in these environments as an alternative to the real be accepted?

no, because eventually someone will get pissed off at the results and physically attack the infrastructure and people because "frick you we/I should have won!"

It would be possible as long as everyone agrees to be bound by certain rules and are prepared to gang up on anyone who would flip the board like

It is a general principle that nihilistic c**ts that break perfectly good taboos for expedience or because they feel it allows them to "win" ruin things for everyone; and it is then everyone's responsibility if they get away with it.

If vr war actually became accepted, warfare would focus on which side can cyber attack the servers to show the most favorable result for your side.

We could even just simplify it to counting who's side is bigger. Count the "soldiers" on each side and see who has more.
The side with more people gets to rule for a few years, then check again and see if they did well enough to keep their people loyal.

That would work wouldn't it? The system of counting would be respected and we'd let all the "soldiers" participate who want to?
And the count would definitely be accepted by everyone because it's the reality of the situation and you can't deny reality.

How are we doing the counting though? Trying to get both armies in one place seems like it would be a huge waste of resources and time, but if we let them stay where they are to be counted I feel like we would run into problems with realism and territorial control and stuff. Like, what if one side technically had less soldiers, but at the same time their soldiers are spread out controlling vital farmland and waterways or highly defensible mountainous areas, while the other side has heaps of soldiers, but they're all concentrated in urban areas with zero logistics.
Or what if one side was to try to recruit soldiers from a different country, do would they be automatically counted for the side that recruited them as soon as they cross the border or would there be some process to verify their loyalty to their chosen side?

        >How are we doing the counting though?
Probably just get everyone to write their side's name on a piece of paper and put it in a box, then we count the pieces of paper.

Military using VR as a human interface to control and see information? Very possible. It has been tested in small programs.

Simulated war in a video game to solve real war problems? No. War is about forcing your opponent to concede through violent coercion. Nothing wagered is nothing lost.

Why hasn't it happened already? By your own logic war should have stopped as soon as star trek came out and people realised it could never happen IRL. The fact that war continues unabated suggests the answer to your question is no. We'll probably get some fun vidya though.

I don't remember Ciconia too well since phase 1 came out years ago and phase 2 never but wasn't the plot that wars were done in vr simulators, until suddenly that wasn't good enough and people started shit irl? Or did the main character just want wars to be done in vr? I don't remember. phase 2 never.

No, VR what mostly will be used it to create a "memetic" super soldier like MGS2 showed, they will be useful for brainwashing basically.
