            >The doctors told me that I had severe bruises and a crack in the bones of the hip joint, but there was no operation. You can't get out of bed for three weeks. The rest is abrasions on the body and the head is spinning. Doctors say that if I keep bed rest, then everything will be fine, - Anatoly shared.

Its a crew served weapon, technically two men: a gunner sitting on the left side, and a loader standing exposed on the right side to load each box containing the ammo belt. This is what the door on the right is for.

The shovels got me unprepared tbqh. Now i saw the last whine video from prigozhin which hinted on so much internal fighting that we actually might be getting very close yet another culmination followed by front collapse on many places.

        >we actually might be getting very close yet another culmination
I've heard that both nato and the ukrainian command thinks the russians will culminate at bakhmut (at least with this wave of wagner conscripts and mobiks), so their goal is to make sure that happens before the ground dries out - which should happen early this year due to the relative lack of snow cover.

      >Is the turret like remotely controlled or will there be a guy sitting there?
It's manned, but considering the kind of "armor" the MT-LB has, it's entirely possible the naval turret actually is better protected against HMG fire.
Tough shit about the drone/dropped grenades and airburst shells tho :^)
The real kicker is that the turret is hydraulically traversed and the MT-LB doesn't HAVE hydraulics, so the gunner will have to use the backup manual traverse which is slow as shit.

      >And won't that make the vehicle a bit back heavy?
MT-LB served as a platform for lots of stuff in the past.

      >Is the turret like remotely controlled or will there be a guy sitting there?
Here is a 3D view of the turret.
      >gunner sits on the left
      >the 65 round belts are fed from the ammo box on the right
      >the loader uses the door on the right side of the turret to change the boxes and feed the belts
      >the loader has to disembark, climb on top of a vehicle and stand fully exposed to do his job
      >each ammo box is 35kg so likely a second loader passes the ammo up to the loader standing on the roof
      >the vehicle has no steps or footing as it wasn't designed for people to stand on top of it

        Anonymous

No way in hell anyone's resupplying this shit in combat, except maybe if it's used in a fire support role from a way off.

          Anonymous

Especially in spring with sleet or rain, the roof will be too slippery to stand upright for the loader to do his job. The vehicle has to withdraw and be stationary somewhere safe for the crew to disembark and reload a belt.

The ammo came in these boxes. From the cutaway above, looks like they may just drop into the feed hopper. But can't exactly tell.

Because "is running" does not equal "has run out", which Russian shills will equal in bad faith every time someone claims the former. It is a huge problem, means that a lot of Russian artillery/missile fire has slowed, probably same shit at the level of rifle ammo, but it's not LOL THEY WELDED A WW2 AA TURRET TO AN MTLB!!1 obvious and you have to look for the signs between the lines.

I don't think "we put some .50s on a supply truck" is that comparable to welding a hand cranked, iron sight AA designed in the 40s to an AFV from the 50s. One is just adding some extra firepower to a vehicle that didn't have any, while the other is putting a towering, big and obsolete naval gun to a worn-out vehicle that's going to croak and die from the strain alone.
Hell, with the trucks you can just undo some bolts and it's back to normal. The add-ons don't hinder the original function of the truck. Adding the Ziege Tower to that MT-LB is just turning a bad vehicle even worse permanently.

I've been seeing these photos for a day now and it still hurts my brain. There's the logical and rational part of me that sees these photos and thinks it must be some sort of joke or propaganda to make Russia seem dumb, something brewed up by a misguided but patriotic citizen, but then I realise how many of them there are. Then the clownworld part of my mind kicks in and says of course it makes sense that a supposed superpower is now stooping so low as to take APCs from the 1950s and strap naval gun turrets of a similar vintage to the top of them.

I am thoroughly convinced at this point that they probably have no more than a dozen functioning ICBMs and we should just do the world a favour and glass Russia. Tell China that if they shut the frick up and endorse our actions at the UN then they can have Siberia, as long as we're rid of Russia forever.

Not a chance, it is a hand cranked turret with a ww2 gun sight. No optics and even when it was new 80 years ago it was already useless for air defense against newly deployed jets.

It can't target anything smaller than a helicopter and the 60 round belt runs dry after a few bursts. On a boat it would have a crew of 4 men feeding it box after box of ammo.

so you're saying its perfectly suited for drones, which not only are not jets, they are much slower than ww2 prop fighters.

Drones are also a fraction of the size of a jet fighter. The drone just has to move 6 inches to one side and the shell will miss. No proximity fuse.

Tough shit about the drone/dropped grenades and airburst shells tho :^)
The real kicker is that the turret is hydraulically traversed and the MT-LB doesn't HAVE hydraulics, so the gunner will have to use the backup manual traverse which is slow as shit.

not a bad idea, but you don't need the APC for this. the germans did the same with leftover tank turrets when their tank production started failing. the only problem is, its really only good for defending, and russia is attacking.

Because it is literally a 50s artillery tractor/APC with a manual naval AA straight out of WW2 crudely welded on top. It is simple not comparable to just slapping a few metal plates in a humvee for extra protection or trying to turn it into a light indirect fire SPG that is supposed to sit several kilometers behind the frontline.

See how thick the armour plating is on the roof? That is the side armour thickness too. That box offers good protection from enemy infantry and even mortars are not penetrating that roof. The mounted weapons have modern optics and are reliable, and can be reloaded without getting out of the vehicle and climbing onto the roof.

It would not face any long range guided missiles or tanks, just the odd arab teenager with an RPG-7. There are enough eyes and guns in the back to suppress most near threats and eliminate them. For the kind of conflict this was in, it was fine.

            Anonymous

And also more importantly, unlike in the Ukraine conflict this battle box was not sent in alone escorted into an urban area, or sent on a suicide mission through a farmers field unprotected. It would have had multiple vehicles with it plus air cover as needed.

Would it be a good idea to specifically avoid killing these things but hit everything else around them? Let Russia think they stumbled upon a wunderwaffe design so they start cranking these out.

So would these be good for hull downing them and using them as static defensive turets? Would it make sense to throw one of these and a crew of maybe 3-4 guys on a line, in order to free up other assets to press attacks?

t-theres no way we're gonna see these actually taking part in offensive actions right?

      Anonymous

As an Anon previously mentioned, that turret is about 11ft (3.35m) in the air. You'd have to dig a very wide, very deep pit for this to be used in a hull down position effectively.
The only sensible purpose I can think of is using it to try and shoot down the larger drones like the TB-2, helicopters or something similar.

It's a downright bad AA weapon even by WWII standards.
        >low rate of fire
        >low ammo loadout
        >purely mechanical gunsight
        >point-detonating fuze
You'd be lucky shooting down a hovering helicopter with it.
Anything smaller and/or moving would be pretty hard to get even given a properly trained crew.
These will be just handed out to mobiks who have never heard of deflection shooting in their miserable lives.

What's wrong with giving an APC some firepower?

        Anonymous

It's way too high profile for something that is essentially unarmored, lacks power traverse or elevation (since the MTLB doesn't have a hydraulic power unit, perhaps they fitted one, but I doubt it), or optics. Sticking a bare gun with a 5 shot hopper and a gun shield on a pintle mount would unironically be a better choice.

They'll just probabky use it as a mobile 2x20mm cannon to support infantry. Might as well, if they have a bunch of them laying around

I'm highly dubious of it's survivability in that scenario. Frankly it's very concerning that this is the best thing they have for the scenario, for Christ's sake, they made over 140,000 2A13s.

Don't they have Shilkas for this? Or did they pawn them all off?

      Anonymous

I don't think the radar and targeting system of the Shilka is up to the anti-drone job.
The Ukes have them too but they aren't used much either. They mostly use manually operated stuff like ZSU-23-2s. They praised the Gepards highly because I think they filled a gap they had that the Shilka was unable to fill.
