also in case you're not being sarcastic: as long as a vehicle is distinctly marked it can be a fricking mobility scooter and still count as a military vehicle. hence those minivans and smart cars with z's painted on them.

It's an APKWS directed to the target by a self-tracking laser built into the optics ball.

IIRC the original was a firmware mod for F16s to shoot down cruise missiles.

        Anonymous

        >The AGR-20 Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS) is a design conversion of Hydra 70 unguided rockets with a laser guidance kit to turn them into precision-guided munitions (PGMs

so it's not a 'beam rider' it has a seeker on the front right?
so you shoot it ahead of the drone at where you expect it to be at the point of impact and paint the drone with a laser for the missile to make fine adjustments on the fly?

its kind of like heat seeking missiles except the target is too cold so you paint it with a laser instead

          Anonymous

yes, it's semi active laser homing, similar to laser guided bombs and so on

Hydra 70s are going mach 2.5-3 on burnout so they are pretty fast too

            Anonymous

yes but they take time to burn which is slow. has such a laser guided AA system ever been used? i know starstreak uses a laser but starstreak is a beamrider.

cant help but wonder if a fast rotary gun firing regular cheap ammo linked to a counter drone radar wouldnt do a better job for a cheaper price tag
i think you could put something like

            on a truck, or a 7.62 version

              Anonymous

every solid rocket motor takes time to burn. these don't have a sustainer motor so they are relatively short ranged but they still outrange any gun system out there. and bigger shells like Gepard's 40mm aren't cheap either, especially compared to APKWS used with old stocks of Hydras.

              Anonymous

At that point why wouldn't you just use an automatic shotgun?
Rotary guns are fiddly relatively speaking, and unless you're going to have self destructing rounds, which isn't cheap, they're an enormous collateral damage hazard when firing upwards.

          >so it's not a 'beam rider' it has a seeker on the front right?

Correct. During travel, the tracker/laser unit is mounted to the roof and the mast is disassembled and stored in the technical bed. This is because the mast doesn't fit under some bridges. However, the system remains active with the roof mounted unit, and provides protection from drones during travel.

            Anonymous

the mast is telescoping - you can see where the minimum height position is (last recess) and it's exactly where the seeker is in the lower right picture.

              Anonymous

A common misconception. The mast has been collapsed for travel and the tracker/laser unit has been mounted to the cab roof.

the whole point of VAMPIRE (vehicle agnostic palletized isr rocket equipment ) is that all the parts are mounted on a unitary pallet and can be thrown on pretty much any vehicle with enough space to mount it on in 5 minutes with just common tools. adding a roof bracket would just be completely moronic:
                >already have telescoping mast
                >instead of making sure you can move it all the way down you add a bracket on the roof of the vehicle (defeating the whole modular, all-in-one concept)
                >then you frick around with placing/removing the mast and moving the tracker from bracket to mast all the time
                why?

I don't think we've seen any Iranian drones in Ukraine yet. As of now, it's all just media propaganda to drag Iran into the conflict.
However, the claims may actually have incentivized the Russians to actually approach Iran for them. But unless Russia is delivering Iran weapons in return, such as fighter jets, tanks and armored vehicles, then there isn't much that Iran gains from it.
