US says it has intelligence that China is considering backing Russia in Ukrainew with weapons

What weapons might China give Russia? Could it turn the tide of the war? Is it possible that if Ukraine committed fewer war crimes that China would not be able to justify supporting the barbarian Russian invaders?

If they are, it is a mis-direction.
China started publishing new maps yesterday with Russian towns bordering them with the old Chinese names, including re-naming Vladivostok as something that means "Cucumber Bay" or whatever.
They apparently also have been referencing territories ceded to Russia hundreds of years ago in the same language and tone as the islands in the South China sea, and Taiwan.
They're going to seize the eastern half of Russia when RF is too weak to do anything about it.

In any case, how can Ukraine stop its soldiers from committing more war crimes, and in doing so reduce the chance of angering the Dragon Empire? President Xi has noted that most Ukrainian soldiers have not committed war crimes, but the concern is valid given that Ukraine has refused to confront the incidents of concern. What say?

Assuming Russia doesn't cede land amicably, that's three nuclear states (i.e. China, Russia & the Norks as assumed proxy actors on at least one's side). Logically we're back in a situation where Russia HAS to nook over continued losses in Ukraine, otherwise China can be reasonably confident they won't over Vladivostok / Sea Cucumber Land.

Despite Putin claiming chunks of Ukraine are Russian he knows that's a load of shit. Losing in Ukraine means a failed land grab and little more.
However China taking territory that is globally recognized as Russia is a very different story and I could see Russia using a tactical nuke to try and scare them off.

Chinese hardliners have been seething about Russia for decades, they currently share some geopolitical objectives but the USSR and CCP were outright hostile to each other (because the CCP wanted the USSR to more Stalinist and wanted nuclear war with the West by the way) and Russia was among the countries to force the Unequal Treaties on China right next to the UK and Japan.

        Anonymous

I can understand that to an extent, because a lot of the agreements forced on the country continued right on up until the 50s so it's theoretically possible that some of the people in charge might even remember that period of time if they've managed to make it to their 80s.
It's just a bit bizarre to me that they make claims on Vladivostok as if it was stolen from them just yesterday.
It's generally been considered a Russian city for 160 years.

Anon, every single modern nation larps as all "previous versions of itself" aka the former states it identifies with and views the maximal extent of any territorial claims by ANY of those former states as their "historical and natural territory". It is fricking psychotic moronation. It does not matter there was no continuance of government or how different the ideologies may be or how in many cases the current government overthrew and killed the old one.

The Russian Federation is NOT the USSR and it is NOT Imperial Russia but it still views all territory claimed by those states as belonging to it, so we get the Ukraine war. China is currently engaged in border disputes with 17 fricking countries because even though the CCP overthrew the nationalists and the old imperials it still views their territorial claims as its own, no matter how many hundreds of years ago they may have existed. Look at the autism over Cyprus, look at the autism over Sakhalin, or how long Germany and France fought over Alsace and Lorraine. Russia and China are just kind of funnier because of how much they chest thump over being anti-imperialism and anti-colonialism while doing the same shit as everyone else.

            Anonymous

            >how long Germany and France fought over Alsace and Lorraine
They actually didn't fight over it all that long. Like, yeah, it was involved in assorted Holy Roman Empire border changes, but that wasn't based off a desire for territorial revanchism or anything, the HRE always had fluctuating borders. The A-L fighting basically began with the Franco-Prussian war (1870s) and ended with the Third Realm (1930s) since Hitler declared that Germany didn't have any claims on it and recognized it as French territory, same as he renounced German claims on Danish Schleswig. So there was really just 60 years of territory autism there.

China still seethes about having ceded these lands to Russia but for now, China is choosing to ignore the issue. For eg, in a recent historical Chinese TV drama, border conflicts with Russia was conspicuously downplayed while the retaking of Taiwan (in late 1600s) was given prominence. This signals the current Chinese govt priorities.

      > Muh foreign policy analysis in tv dramas

The output of Chinese tv dramas are subject to strict censorship by the government and tv dramas have consistently been used by the government to push messages to the Chinese.

I think China will relook at this when Russia inevitably becomes a client state of China.

Similar strategy as with Russia before the invasion. Release intel in hopes that it works as deterrence.

      >"We're confident that the Chinese leadership is considering the provision of lethal equipment," Burns told "Face the Nation" moderator Margaret Brennan on Friday.

      >Burns emphasized that China has not yet made the decision to transfer lethal aid to Russia, and shed light on the logic behind the Biden administration's decision to make this intelligence public.

      >"We also don't see that a final decision has been made yet, and we don't see evidence of actual shipments of lethal equipment," Burns said. "And that's why, I think, Secretary Blinken and the president have thought it important to make very clear what the consequences of that would be as well."

      >Brennan asked if the administration's goal — by sharing the CIA's intelligence — is to deter China from making the decision to transfer lethal aid. Burns confirmed that this is the plan, adding that for Xi to provide it, "would be a very risky and unwise bet."

China has made it clear that they endeavor to supplant the Rules Based International Order, gilded in the iron clad legitimacy bestowed upon it by British and American stewardship after the holocaust and WWII, and replace it with a system wherein smaller nations are bullied by loans and central bankers, as opposed to compassionately onboarded to a new normal of international freedom of navigation. As the United States, it is our role to prevent the unjust starting of conflicts or invasion of smaller nations. This sacred peaceful path has manifested in a stable globe for many centuries. Russia must now realise that China's goal is their balkanization and exploitation, as opposed to the west's goal of peaceful political resolutions.
